Alone in the Dark

(2005)

To be fair, this is a movie based on an Atari computer game, directed by Uwe Boll...who brought us the awful stinker, "House of the Dead". Still, the game was filled with Lovecraftian references and undertones and I was really looking forward to this movie.

That said? This isn't a Lovecraftian movie...period. Every bit of Lovecraftian influence has been stripped away and replaced in favor of a native American culture that vanished 10,000 years ago. That was pretty disappointing.

The movie itself is worth a matinee, and it is fun and entertaining. Uwe Boll's style has improved and the movie isn't painful to watch. His frantic camera cuts during the combat sequences made for a chaotic, yet strikingly beautiful scene. Perhaps he's finally gotten his stride.

On the matter of casting? Christian Slater is probably wasted in this movie, he can do so much more than the fairly two dimensional role that he plays, but at least he plays the role with style. Tara Reid turned in another forgettable performance and while often on camera spoke very little. This is a good thing. The supporting cast from Bureau 713 (shades of "Stalking the Night Fantastic" perhaps) were often more interesting than some of the lead characters.

The CGI effects were nice and I must admit that I would've liked to have seen more of them, but such is the way of things. Still, the "Xenos" (the horrid creatures trapped below ground for 10,000 years) are pretty nasty and are certainly fun to watch.

This movie is fun, but you can catch it as a matinee or, better yet, catch it on cable.
