Call of Dagon (2002)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Another small set of Flash
movies, meant to be a larger series that seems to have fallen by the
creative wayside. It has been almost two years since the release of
part two, and with every passing day it grows less likely that we will
see a part three. Still, while the story itself is not complete, you
can certainly enjoy these two short films for what they are.
Call
of Dagon (part 1)
The introduction to this series is
dark and atmospheric, truly capturing the feel of a Lovecraft story.
The animation style, while limited by the use of Flash, captures a
surprising amount of detail. Flickering shadows in a dark temple and
the movement of Deep Ones, both images so often evoked by Lovecraft,
both of which are well presented in part one. Part one is a little
short for my taste, ending when it just seems to be beginning, but
that is a standard problem with Flash animation films, films seem
to get broken down into smaller and smaller parts so that the creator
can get some feedback, rather than waiting a bit longer.
Call
of Dagon (part 2)
The second part of this series (word
is that part 3 is in development, but after two years I do not hold
high hopes) sets the scene for what is to come. An explanation of
what is happening, where it is happening, and hints at who is causing
it. This episode has a very noir feel to it, using shadow and light
quite effectively to capture not only the tone of the scene, but the
moods of the characters.
