Beauty in the Dark (2003)

by Kevin S. Quinn

A short review for a short film. While in the Portland area doing a commercial for cable TV I stopped by the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival at the Lovely Hollywood Theatre.

I saw many great shorts but one stands out for its color,

editing, music, and ingenuity. I was entertained by this 15 min short original cosmic horror piece Beauty in the Dark. The audience that was there with me never lost their attention. Some tried to. Only to sit quietly and fascinated with the colorful strong images from this new film maker. What would he do next! A few hecklers seemed more to be having fun and stopped when the work showed it's strengths. It seems like a first attempt but the weaknesses are the exception. Low budget still did not stop this short from shining.

One comment is the door from Hell. Wonderful. you have to see it. Not sure how to hook up to this film maker or where this piece is playing or will play. But if you see it by all means enjoy it.

I was lucky enough to attend last years H.P. Lovecraft film festival. There were many great films but here is a review on one new comer with an original project.

"Beauty in the Dark" one of the best lit pieces I've seen in the smaller format works. They had a wonderful cosmic door scene that would take your breath away. There wasn't a sound in the house when this sequence came up. All eyes were glued. Bravo! I was pleased to see this work added to this data base as this man has real talent. We will see if he can keep it up. The work felt Lovecraftian with octopuses for Cthulhu and lots and lots of mood!!!

Any one in the Portland area this October should treat themselves to this festival. Don't miss it if you can help it. Hopefully this work and many of the others will play again for your enjoyment!
