Re-Penetrator

(2004)

This is the newest film in a strange Lovecraftian sub-genre that Andrew Migliore of Lurker Films has dubbed as "Shagging Shoggoths". If you think it is as disturbing as it sounds? I'd have to agree. This particular film is a adult spoof of Stuart Gordon's "Re-Animator". Make no mistake, these folks weren't intentionally trying to make Lovecraftian porn. To be honest, I doubt that they were aware of the literary history of the character of Herbert West. So "Re-Penetrator" only qualifies in the most vague terms as Lovecraftian, much like "Re-Animator". If you thought "Re-

Animator" was barely Lovecraftian? Sheesh.

Re-Penetrator comes off as a sort of Halloween pornstar joke, and in many ways it is. Several times there is laughter (both on and off screen) and it is hard to take this film seriously. Fortunately enough, this film doesn't want to be taken too seriously. As one would expect, there is little plot. Dr. Hubert Breast re-animates the corpse of a dead stripper with an unquenchable desire for sex (hear that whirring sound? It is Lovecraft, spinning in his grave.), that's it, end of plot...end of acting really. There are a few bits of over the top dialog, but not a whole lot. that isn't what this film is about. What the movie is about is hard core, blood-spattered, zombie porn. Disturbingly enough, this movie delivers....and I'm not so certain that I ever needed to be confronted by some of those images.

The thing is, this film has already developed a bit of a cult following. Originally made as a Halloween feature for a porn website, the website found themselves in trouble with their billing company over what was seen as a terms of service violation. So, Re-Penetrator became possibly the first pornographic film to be banned from the internet. Considering what all is out there, that is quite a feat. After a hiatus, the movie came back with its own website and a different billing company making it available just in time for Christmas (I suppose red blood and green re-animation fluid are festive....if you squint).

The website has both a "Director's Cut" and a "Screening Cut" (from a screening in New York) and there is a gallery of production stills. The "Director's Cut" has about ten minutes more footage than the "Screening Cut" (the Directors cut is just over 20 minutes long) and has a different soundtrack. The music itself tends to be interesting, and a bit fun...which is hard to imagine for a hardcore, zombie porn movie...but then, why take such a subject too seriously I suppose.

Make no mistake, this movie is not for the faint of heart, the weak of stomach, or those who are underage. This is not a work friendly or family friendly film. It is, unapologetically, hardcore porn and takes the sexualization of Lovecraft's work and characters to new heights (or depths).
