(2003)

A simple tale of a fisherman who brings a chest up in his nets, this movie is a stunning piece of animation. Utilizing no dialog, the story relies only on its animation and music to tell its story, and the animators pulled no punches. From

breathtaking time-lapse shots to camera angels that pan about so freely you'd swear someone was working a steadycam, this is what animation should be all about.

The shear attention to detail is astounding. There are many bits of animation that weren't needed in the telling of the tale, but make it more real. My particular favorite is a fish that is brought up into the rowboat, one that seems to symbolize the fisherman himself.

Don't watch this expecting a deep and heady plot. Watch it for what it is, a brilliant Lovecraftian short.
