The Terror

Justice League
: The Terror Beyond (2003)

Seldom do we get to see Lovecraftian references in the mainstream, but Cthulhu vs. Superman? That's a new one.

The Terror Beyond is a two part episode from the second season of Cartoon Network's Justice League. The tale begins with Aquaman and Dr. Fate recruiting the Hulk-like villain "Solomon Grundy" to aid them in the performance of an arcane ritual. Of course, Superman, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl interrupt the process and all Mythos breaks loose. It turns out that the ritual was meant to seal a breach into the dimension of the Old Ones, ancient interdimensional beings who were responsible for the sinking of Atlantis. With the ritual disrupted, the breach opens up and the Old Ones pour into our dimension and launch an attack on Atlantis. While Aquaman returns to defend Atlantis, the other heroes enter the realm of the Old Ones to attack their leader "Ichthultu", a squid headed monster voiced by none other than Rob Zombie.

The episodes are fun, but not a great adaptation of Lovecraft. Still, the animators do a

great job of capturing the alien nature of the servitors of the Old Ones, and we even get to see Solomon Grundy face off against a Gug. Now, much has been made that this is an obvious homage/rip-off of the Marvel comics team, the Defenders. I have to agree. Solomon Grundy is more Hulk-like than ever before, Dr. Fate and Dr. Strange have always been a bit interchangeable and likewise Aquaman and the Sub-Mariner. Still, no matter the actual cause behind the storyline, it is great fun and highly recommended viewing.

Currently the episode is not available for purchase, though with the release of Justice League Season One onto DVD I'd say that it is only a short matter of time.
