Welcome to Unfilmable.com's "Hellboy" news page. While Hellboy is not a Lovecraft adaptation, it has been described as very Lovecraftian by many of it's fans. Some of the early character sketches and production artwork have a strong Lovecraftian feel to them. Director Guillermo Del Toro is set to direct the straight Lovecraft adaptation "At the Mountains of Madness" after it's release.

December 5: The Road to Hellboy …

… is paved with director Guillermo del Toro as he adapts his favorite comic, Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, into a live-action feature.

When listening to genre favorite director Guillermo del Toro discuss his love for HELLBOY, images of Wednesday afternoon at the local comic book shop – the day new titles arrive and fans congregate to debate the latest twists in the lives of their beloved characters – immediately come to mind. It’s quite clear that the filmmaker is a true admirer of the Mike Mignola-created series and has been for quite some time.

"I’ve been a fan since the mid-’90s when the book first came out," admits del Toro. "HELLBOY came out, I bought it and I loved the images, but I couldn’t follow the story. I found it a little disjointed and, to this day, I think ‘Seed of Destruction’ [the first book of the series] is not the best story in HELLBOY. To me, the best HELLBOY trade paperback is ‘The Corpse’ and the short stories. I think Hellboy as a character worked really great in a long arc – ‘Conqueror Worm’ would be my favorite long arc story. But in ‘Seed of Destruction,’ I still felt a little bit of Mignola finding his footing on the character. Then in ’97 when I was shooting MIMIC, they were publishing ‘Wake the Devil’ and I think that story made more sense to me. Suddenly, the stories of HELLBOY started having their own flavor and I became hopelessly addicted."

December 2: Guillermo del Toro Talks Potential 'Hellboy' Sequels

From the latest issue of Wizard Magazine, which features an interview with director Guillermo del Toro:

Wizard: Do you see yourself doing sequels?

GDT: I'd love to live in "Hellboy land" for the rest of my natural life! The fact is, I approach movies saying, "I'm going to have fun." The first impulse on any movie has never been, "Can I make money? Can I gain reputation?" None of that crap is pure Hollywood. And I tell you, how can you not want to have fun on a Hellboy movie? I would love to do 'The Wolves of Saint August' next, and I would love to mix and match it with other storylines. I told Mike that if we go for a second movie, I would love to go for like a super extravaganza. And definitely end up with the Conqueror Worm! [Laughs]

Previously, del Toro has stated that in sequels he hopes to add Roger the Homunculus, Physical Medium Johann Kraus, a reimagining of the floating Nazi mad scientist head-in-a-jar Herman Von Klempt, his nazi cyber-apes the Kriegaffe...the list goes on. If we get a sequel, expect to recieve (as del Toro himself often puts it) "da woiks". Pick up Wizard for the full interview, and check out a scan of the all new Hellboy shot in our gallery!

December 1: Spectral Motion's Mike Elizalde on Hellboy

Source: The Average Joes

The Average Joes has up a new interview with Spectral Motion, Inc.'s Mike Elizalde in which he talks about the Hellboy movie. Here's a clip...

JL: You created Sammael and Abe Sapien. From what little we've seen they both look amazing. Were there any problems experienced while creating these beauties?

ME: There are certain elements of Sammael's physiognomy that required a great deal of attention both in the creative process and during filming due to the complexity of the required effect. This particular feature, which I will be able to discuss at length after April 2nd, really called to task all of Mark Setrakian's technical knowledge and physical and emotional endurance. But in the end Guillermo had his Lovecraftian monster and we have an amazing creature to our credit. Kudos as well to Brian Steele [who plays Sammael in the film] for his outstanding endurance and performance.

With regards to Abe, we only had one significant burp during the pre-production phase. After we conducted the final makeup test on Doug Jones it became apparent that his shoulders and chest weren't quite beefy enough for a chap who spends a great deal of time swimming, so we had to re-sculpt, remold, and re-run all the shoulder and neck bits and augment the pectorals with inserts as the deadline loomed. Once again the end result speaks for itself.
