Welcome to Unfilmable.com's "Hellboy" news page. While Hellboy is not a Lovecraft adaptation, it has been described as very Lovecraftian by many of it's fans. Some of the early character sketches and production artwork have a strong Lovecraftian feel to them. Director Guillermo Del Toro is set to direct the straight Lovecraft adaptation "At the Mountains of Madness" after it's release.

June 28: Hellboy: Over-Budget but Awesome?

From CountingDown.com:

So, a bunch of online journalists were flown over to Prague to check out the in-progress Hellboy shoot. (CountingDown included) As was to be expected, the words back--from people familiar with the very smart, very cool comic book--were positive as, uh, hell. (Definitely CountingDown included) Though the project is a little behind and a little over budget (yes, the word is that an exec or two are flying over to say, "Howdy!"), that doesn't override the fact that it's supposedly the work of a real visionary, one Guillermo del Toro.

Is it a coincidence that Paramount moved Mission: Impossible 3 away from Hellboy in the Memorial Day slot next year? Yes. Yes, it is, but it's still fun to think that the underdog of May 2004 (compare the budget to, say, Van Helsing or Troy) might turn out to be a film for the ages. Heard it here first, people...

June 26: 'Hellboy' Mention in 'The Oregonian'

From The Oregonian:

It's worth noting here that Dark Horse has done its part to contribute to the high and low ends of the comics-to-film spectrum -- "The Mask" and "Dr. Giggles" occupy proud or notorious positions in the pantheon. Right now, art-splatter director Guillermo del Toro ("Chronos," "The Devil's Backbone," Marvel Studios' "Blade II") is in Prague filming an adaptation of one of Dark Horse's most respected titles, the horror/action hybrid "Hellboy" -- the story of a demon summoned by Nazis and intercepted by American GIs who grows up to become a "paranormal investigator." But how did a movie that imagines the bastard son of Satan as a two-fisted action hero ever get a green light?

June 26: Hellboy Interview: Guillermo Del Toro!

~How would you classify the film? Gothic fantasy, fairy tale, adventure?

Guillermo Del Toro: It’s its own little genre. What’s great about Mignola is that he has the wiseass, hardboiled detective mixed with the pulp horror from the Weird Tales mixed with the Lovecraftian cosmic aspect of horror mixed with the Jack Kirby’s action style moments. How can you define Mignola? It’s Mignola, it’s Hellboy!~

June 13: Hellboy Set Visit, Day 1

Countingdown's David Server has sent in his first set visit report!

~Normally I wouldn't discuss events outside of an actual trip in one of these reports, but this was too weird not to mention, so just bear with me on this one. I was driving to hang out with some friends on my last night in Boston before I headed off to Prague, and more specifically, to the set of Guillermo del Toro's 'Hellboy'. I turned up my radio, and was shocked to hear the following lyrics -- "You're going straight to Hellboy." A few seconds later, I came to my senses and realized that they were actually singing 'you're going straight to hell, boy', which I later learned was part of the chorus to The Clash's song 'Straight to Hell.' Just a weird coincidence maybe, but still pretty cool. Not to mention more or less accurate -- 24 hours later, I was airborne and en route to Prague to check out the set of 'Hellboy'.~

Countingdown's own David Server interviewed Spectral Motion's main man, Mike Elizalde, on the set of Hellboy.

~ Spectral Motion, the new special effects company working on the creatures for 'Hellboy', are up to their ears in demonic claws, fake drool, and fluttering gills -- and Spectral's main man, Mike Elizalde, took some time out of his schedule here on the Prague set of 'Hellboy' to talk about it as part of CountingDown's continuing Hell-coverage! ~

June 10: Guillermo Del Toro's Next

Countingdown talked with Director Guillermo Del Toro on the Prague set of the comic adaptation and he spoke about his upcoming flicks: "Before coming to Prague, I turned in my 17 page scriptment of 'Wind in the Willows', and a 50 page treatment of 'At the Mountains of Madness'. My writing partner Matthew Robbins finished a pass several weeks ago, and I made my comments and my changes on the weekend, and the screenplay has been turned into the studio, we'll see what happens. On' Wind in the Willows' now, we're on pages. Every Sunday night, I send in my copies". He also talked about the possibility of a sequel if the first "Helboy" does well: "I would love to do a sequel. I would love to do every Hellboy movie until Ron turns 70. I think that there are so many good stories...What I would like is to have [series creator] Mike Mignola and I come up with a story that incorporates some stuff of the comic, but is actually mostly original. I would like to take a little of 'Almost Colossus' and a lot of 'Conqueror Worm' and then go at it".

June 8: HELLBOY: MEMORIAL DAY 2004

Revolution Studios has locked down a release date for Hellboy, nabbing the all-important Memorial Day 2004 slot.

The film is currently shooting in Prague (Nick heads to the set on-the-morrow) and, as you know, stars Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Selma Blair and Doug Jones.

The quote from Revolution co-honcho Tom Sherak that hit with the press release is: "We are confident that with Guillermo del Toro at the helm, Hellboy will deliver the fantastic action, special effects and excitement that summer moviegoers have come to expect."

Spider-Man 2 was originally hitting from Revolution-distributor Sony Pictures, but when that got zipped over to July, a slot was opened up.

Sort of.

I mean, come on. Paramount is opening Mission: Impossible 3 there and Warner Brothers is going in with Troy. So, Sony's marketing will have its work cut out for itself... as that's also only two weeks after Universal hits with Van Helsing. Should be interesting.

GOT A QUESTION? In CountingDown's continuing coverage of director Guillermo del Toro's upcoming adaptation of Dark Horse Comics' 'Hellboy', our own David 'Typhon24' Server will be venturing out to Prague next week to check things out! We'll be chatting it up with Ron 'Hellboy' Perlman, Selma 'Liz' Blair, del Toro himself, and more!

But what do the fans want to know? That's for you to decide! We've got a few questions up our sleeves, but if you guys have anything additional to add, send it in and let us know! Look for the reports to come in from the Hellish Prague set as soon as we can bang them out. And keep it here at CountingDown for all the latest updates!

June 1: Guillermo del Toro's replies to fan questions

The following is courtesy of CountingDown.com.

Director Guillermo del Toro has been kind enough to answer some fans' questions (actually, pretty much any questions asked!) on the official HellSite message board. In an effort to keep those of you who don't have time to read through the postings educated on the latest Hell-rumblings, we here at CountingDown are going to do you a favor and recap some of the news nuggets that del Toro has shared in the message boards as of late. Here's some of the best stuff:

On Music: 90% score. And the "soundtrack" portion will be totally guided by the characters and NOT by the TOP OF THE CHARTS crap. 5 years ago I asked Mike Mignola what HELLBOY would listen to and his answer was: "mostly Tom Waits" so- pending negotiations- I will follow that dictum. Rest assuered there will be no Techno, no hip-hop, no rap and no little pop ballad at the end." It is also indicated that del Toro is still hoping for Marco Beltrami (Blade II) to compose the score for the film if his schedule can allow it.

On Comic-Book Dialogue: "HB does say "Aw, crap" and "That's all for you" plus more than a cartload of dialogue straight form the comics."

On Hellboy's Right Hand of Doom: "The hand is 80 % live action RC controlled animatronic and 20% CGI. It's quite dextrous and was mechanize to be self-contained. The hand is made of polymer and rubber."

On the Effects: "We have a crapload of miniatures and forced perspective composites. I am in favor of all old-fashioned techniques. I favor getting a physical model, stunt, etc and leave CGI only as a last resource...I would say that [the creatures] are 70% MAKE UP and animatronics and 30% CGI."

On Ron Perlman's Make-Up: "We did what would allow Ron to perform the easiest. Wait a bit 'til more photos pop out and -certainly- until you see him perform. Heavier prosthetics would have made a really neat PHOTO STILL or BACKGROUND CHARACTER but the more delicate prosthetics (there not an INCH of Ron's face that is not covered in appliances) allow him to act. Hellboy in the comics acts through an ever-changing model of lines and shadows. He's as flexible as Mike's pen."

On Hellboy's Fight Scenes: The HELLBOY fight scenes are EXACTLY as you described them from the comics. Hellboy get beaten a lot and in a BIG way, but when he connects- oh, momma!!- its hard. NOTHING to do with the fights in B2. I did that, and I for one have had quite my fill of "acrobatic" martial arts stuff for now. There is one character that uses blades to fight in the HELLBOY movie but some of the moves he has you have NEVER seen before. And all the fighting of said character is done live. NO acrobatics. Then, there's HELLBOY himself... 100% two-fisted, bare-knuckled ass-dragging, sweaty, dirty alley fighting- MONSTER SIZE. 0% martial arts. Not with his size!! He weights three-four times what Sammo does.

On Sequels: "Whatever the budget, if HB is to continue I would love to be there. I also would love to see him turned into a 100% faithful to mignola anime series (can you imagine that?????!!!!) of short episodes."

And that's just a taste! There's bucketloads more at HellSite's message boards, and if you have a question - go post it! Guillermo seems to be taking all comers, so what are you still doing here? Hit the link below and starting posting!
