Welcome to Unfilmable.com's "Hellboy" news page. While Hellboy is not a Lovecraft adaptation, it has been described as very Lovecraftian by many of it's fans. Some of the early character sketches and production artwork have a strong Lovecraftian feel to them. Director Guillermo Del Toro is set to direct the straight Lovecraft adaptation "At the Mountains of Madness" after it's release. Please submit news and links here. Past news is archived below. Caution: This page contains spoilers! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ November 29: More 'Hellboy' Movie or Comic Figures from Mezco Toys? NewToySmell.com has posted a new interview with the president of Mezco Toys, the company handling the upcoming 'Hellboy' 8" action figure line - here's what was said about HB: MFRX - 2) Can we also see the Hellboy movie line continue on? MEZ: this is always a hard question to fully answer. I can give you the standard "it depends on the market reaction & then our capability to react timely to that" & in short that is the truth. For me I would do more HB in a second. We are working on that decision now & are also making a few exclusives that will extend that product we are offering- I can tell you that as of now Previews will have an exclusive Hellboy & Abe figure on the 8" figures & that there will be an exclusive version of the 18" figure at Tower. Also we are working on some other exclusives within the first run of goods & like I said determining if we will do more assortments. MFRX - 3) Can we also expect to see this union with Hellboy, and Dark Horse carry over into a full on Hellboy comic book line? MEZ: HMMMMMMMMMMMM no comment. I'll take a 'no comment' over a 'no' anyday! Hit the link below for the full Q&A! Source: NewToySmell.com (Thanks to http://www.countingdown.com/) Dark Delicacies, Dec 7th - 2 pm: Writer/Director Guillermo del Toro signing the DVDs of Cronos ($19.95) and Devil's Backbone ($29.95) (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) (Thanks to http://superherohype.com/) If you head on over to Apple.com, not only can you watch the trailer for Gillermo del Toro's Hellboy in amazing QuickTime, but you can now download it too! Hellboy hits theaters on April 2nd, 2004 and stars Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, John Hurt and Jeffrey Tambor. (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) From SuicideGirls.com's interview with Guillermo del Toro: DRE: When the Wachowski brothers put out Bound they handed their cinematographer Frank Miller's Sin City and said can you make our movie look like this and he said not with today's technology. You took on the very difficult challenge of trying to do ['Hellboy' series creator Mike Mignola's] art in live action. How tough was it? GDT: I issued a style guide on the colors and shapes in the movie. But the main thing with it is that you have to realize that Mignola cheats a lot. He cheats shadows and light where there shouldn't be any. He himself is the first one to admit it; he says if I don't like something I make it black. From the moment you realize it's impossible to make a literal translation you stop worrying about it and enjoy it. The movie is not the comic but it is the best movie I could make out of that comic. The comic is fantastic but it's totally dependent on comic book storytelling. You can juxtapose, freeze frame a whole page. It's a completely different ball of wax. The comic is a masterpiece and the movie is definitely reverential of that. Hit the link below for the full interview! Take I've heard a bunch of gratuitous love and a fair bit of skepticism. There's also an instant backlash against the film from those who deem it too close to the "geek" culture and therefore must rebel against it on principle. The trailer shows the film for what it is, an ensemble that just happens to be built around a wisecracking spawn of Hell. There's those who say that defies the comic, but I disagree entirely. You tell me what the Hellboy comic book would be without Abe Sapian, Liz Sherman, Professor Bruttenholm, Lobster Johnson, Roger, and the other assorted denizens of Mike Mignola's world? It'd be pretty pictures and little else. Hellboy is about a heck of a lot more than just the title character. I don't want to be branded an apologist, so I'll digress. I liked the trailer. It showed a lot of the scenes I enjoy from the parts of the film I've seen (the scene where Hellboy punches the car to a spinning, messy halt is a standout). It showcases the supernatural element. It showcases that Mignola flair (that shot of Rasputin receding into the shadows is unbelievable). It showcases the playful tone. It showcases Guillermo's style and how alive the film is. It does everything a first glimpse should: It leaves you wanting more. I'd give the trailer a solid 7.5 as far as doing what it needs to do and have no doubts that by February a lot of Sony's work will be done. (Thanks to http://www.chud.com/) Source: Blake Wright Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro was present for a Q & A at Wizard World Dallas today, November 22. He said that the production went out of their way for the new trailer to give people, who don't know a lot about Hellboy, a snapshot of the story. del Toro added that you can expect a new 30-second spot on the Super Bowl, which includes a few more digital monster images. The production is currently about 10% into creating the special effects. In about two weeks, giant banners of both the good and bad guys in the movie will start appearing in theaters. On a funny note, Guillermo said that moviegoers can't really tell who the good and bad guys are from the way the characters look, though the good guys are definitely more colorful. You can also expect a new poster in early spring. Commenting on the Hellboy character, the director said that he's "a regular Joe, a blue collar guy. He comes with a monkey wrench and a bunch of tools and says, 'where's the leak.'" About the story, Guillermo added Hellboy is "a guy learning to be a man, even though he was born a demon." For fans who like to be spoiled, del Toro mentioned an "Art of Hellboy" book will be out before the movie is released. It will be 200 pages long, a hardback and full of spoilers, including spoilers about the movie's ending. It's a real nuts & bolds type of book and goes into quite a lot of details. Speaking on how the movie became a reality, he said that officially there were 13 drafts of the script - and unofficially, there were 65 drafts! While Guillermo had high praise for Revolution Studios for picking the project up, he did mention some interesting things about those studios that didn't. He said Universal asked him if the character could be a regular guy and then turn into Hellboy when he becomes angry (was this before they got The Hulk rights??!), another studio wanted to know if Hellboy could not have a tail in the film, and one studio also wanted The Rock for the role. It sounds as though Hellboy ended up in the right place, as Revolution gave Guillermo $60 million to develop the film, let him use the script he wanted, and let him cast Ron Perlman in the lead. del Toro told Hellboy creator Mike Mignola that he wanted to make it "The Last Emperor" of cheesy monster movies. Guillermo del Toro not only wrote and directed, he's also providing voices for Hellboy. He's voicing Baby Hellboy, Kroenen and the monster Samuel. So will there be a sequel? "If we come up with a great idea, then yes. If there is a second one, it should explore a different side of Hellboy," said del Toro. For his upcoming projects, Guillermo is finishing up a rewrite of "Mountains of Madness" and next year will be writing a Victorian ghost story. Here's some bits... Anticipated apologies. I will be in the Texas convention this weekend, so my Q&A has to be done today and won't resume until about 10-12 days from now . I will be brief since we are in the mixing stage in ONE HOUR.... At the Texas convention we will have a small but really nice prop from the movie with us and it will be raffled amongst the audience. 9) It's great to hear that you have all theis plans for movies like Mountain of Madness aso ... but I was wondering, if (or rather WHEN) Hellboy hits the movies and it becomes a big hit, and the studio decides it's worthwhile to do a sequel... will you be too busy with another movie? I would love to do another HB movie. The full Q&A is available at the link above and more info on this weekend's convention can be found here! (Thanks to http://superherohype.com/) Terra.com has posted a brief interview with actor Rupert Evans, who plays new BPRD recruit Agent John Myers in 'Hellboy'! The brief interview is in Spanish, so here's the best translation we could come up with using various translation programs: Q: How was it working with Guillermo del Toro? A: Guillermo brings together people from all over the world; we have Spanish people, Mexican people, the English, the Czechs...it's a very eclectic mix. Guillermo works seven days a week, he immerses himself in the material, he's wonderful; and he loves it, he made it very easy for me to adapt. It's been a wonderful experience. There's a relaxed atmosphere [on the set], we had a lot of fun. And Guillermo takes risks. For some of us [on the cast], this is our first time; he gives opportunities to people. I'm not a big celebrity, and here I am in this enormous production. I'm very thankful to Guillermo. Q: How you would describe this project? A: There's nothing else like it, it's incredible. Q: Why do you think that Guillermo chose you for this film? A: I'm not that expensive, I think that's why they chose me. The budget's not very big. There's no big star in this movie, and consequently all the money that they have you'll see up on the screen. I don't know why they chose me, I ask myself that same question everyday. (Thanks to http://www.countingdown.com/) November 18: Guillermo del Toro on the Monsters of 'Hellboy' CHUD has posted their impressions of the Hellboy trailer, as well as a quick Q&A with director Guillermo del Toro - here's a clip: We next asked about the different kinds of monsters seen in the trailer and the movie itself and their Lovecraftian inspiration. "The first monster was one of the producers - showed up early on," joked del Toro with a laugh. "Nah. The big one is called Behemoth. You only get a glimpse at the end when Hellboy says, 'How big can he be?' He's about four stories high. For those that know the comic, it's a battle scene true to the comic where he has a big-ass sword and proceeds to try and maim a four-story high thing. It's very much trying to go stay true to the Mignola that had a lot of Lovecraft influence on the design. There are another bunch of monsters that are floating in space encased in a quartz prison - for those that know the comic, that sounds very logical (laughs). For those that don't, it's basically a group of Gods of Chaos that are waiting to be awakened to return to pace Earth again. They are primordial gods that are trying to be resurrected through a ritual and through Hellboy. Then there is the hellhound, which is Sammel, which is the one that appears crossing the street and all that, which is basically a one single hell soldier, but that has the capability that every time you kill him - you get two. You kill two, you get four, you kill four, you get eight and if you kill past eight, you're in trouble. What we did, in all the monsters there are pieces that we did physically that are done taking the best of both worlds - the CG worlds and the physical world. I come from both in my effects background. I tried to combine them to create new-looking monsters." For "Hellboy," Eden FX will be working with the film's director Guillermo del Toro ("Blade 2," "Cronos," "The Devil's Backbone," "Mimic,") and Visual Effects Supervisor Edward Irastorza ("Blade," "Blade II," "Cats & Dogs", "Dungeons and Dragons", and the TV series "Hercules" and "Xena.") Guillermo del Toro has answered more questions from fans about the Hellboy movie on the official message board. Here's a rundown of the highlights... This past few days have been very crazy, what with the TEASER POPSTER about to be on theatres this week (WITH MATRIX) and the trailer getting ready (will debut with THE MISSING and then LAST SAMURAI) plus the usual work on the editing, etc 7) If the corpse in the hellboy movie is a tribute to the corpse storyline, please tell me the corpse loses his arm only for Mr. Boy to wonder what a dead guy needs with his arm. He is a wink to the fans BUT he doesn't loose his arm. His cameo is brief but delightful. 13) I love Santiago Segura, he´s the funniest man in the world. Loved "Torrente, El Brazo Tonto de la Ley" and "Torrente 2: Misión Marbella", and his cameo in Blade 2. How long is gonna be his cameo in Hellboy? Is he going to interact with Hellboy in some way? Yes. There is a scene where Torrente fights Hellboy. Not exactly what you might think, but very funny. 14) Is Hellboy gonna have a worldwide realise or what? Absolutely. Nos vemos en Espana. 18) Has the studio given you freedom enough to make exactly the kind of movie you wanna do? 100% freedom. 20) I was wondering if the "Art Of Hellboy" movie book is going to be released before or after the movie? A few weeks before. 21) Theres also been some videos online of I guess a trade show where it shows clips and the costumes and such. And was wondering if that will be on the dvd or could you post a better copy on the site or something? The "Sizzle Reel" will be FULLY available in an UPDATED stage in the next 3 weeks. HERE in this site. (Thanks to http://www.superherohype.com/) November 18: Hellboy Gets More Competition From... Cows? Sony's Hellboy adaptation just got some more competition in the form of cows! Yup, Walt Disney Pictures has scheduled their new animated feature "Home on the Range" up against the comic book film on April 2, 2004. Will either of them blink and move to another date before then? We will have to see, but they're both bound to be very popular films. Other films scheduled for the same date are Fox's "Catch That Kid," DreamWorks' "Envy" and Paramount's "Twisted". BBC Films talked to Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro who says production is nearing the end. Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Mimic, Blade II) is putting the final touches to comic horror Hellboy, about a demon persecuted by Nazis who uses his super powers as a force for good. Ron Perlman stars alongside John Hurt and Selma Blair in what sounds unnervingly like Schindler's List meets Blade. He told us: "Hellboy is in the last stages of editing and I love it! I just love everything about it. It's the favourite movie I've done, emotionally and artistically." Meanwhile, Dark Horse Comics is soliciting their movie products which will be released around the same time as the movie. You can check out the line-up here! (Thanks to http://www.superherohype.com/) November 18: Phil Tippett Talks Hellboy Special Effects CG Channel spoke to Phil Tippett from F/X house Tippett Studio about the Hellboy effects... We're certainly motivated by the ethics of craftsmanship, trying to do good work. I believe that that is pretty much our calling card, rather than just working on the super-slick, popular pictures. It's really important for us, on whatever projects we're working on, to pay a great deal of attention to detail, the picture making and the performance side of things. Everybody here takes a great deal of pride in that. We also try to be filmmaker friendly. Currently we're working with Guillermo del Toro on Hellboy. He's this terrific guy, who really understands the milieu. He's very engaging, really includes you, and wants as much creativity to come from you as possible. That's really worthwhile, looking for those kinds of relationships. So you're not just churning out visual effects by the yard, and charging ten thousand dollars a frame (or whatever it is), but are actually trying to be much more filmmaker friendly. French movie magazine Mad Movies! has a new feature article on Hellboy in their latest issue, which includes some great shots from the movie never seen before. (Thanks to http://www.superherohype.com/) November 18: Guillermo del Toro Continues Hellboy Updates Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro has provided another update on the movie on the film's official website. Here's some of the highlights... 3) (Just a personal one) Did the studio allow you to change the Columbia logo? For example Hellboy hand instead of the torch :-) (Hmm, I don't even know if you were serious about it, when you talked to Smoker in Prague about the Coolumbia poster. And I don't even know if you remember :-) -LOL- I DO remember although both Smoker and I had a beer or two in the system... I wouldn't do anything to harm the Columbia lady, seriously- 8) whats up with the feet?? no hoof feet eh? Yes... there will be visible in one scene, but he hides them /protects them with boots. Wouldn't you??? After all he SHAVES his horns... 11) - have you talked to Mr. H-P about this role any? Did he take some convincing? He ALREADY did the VOICE sesssion for the movie. He was delighted with the script and the character and wanted to meet the writer. I informed him it was me, the chubby Mexicano. He was quite in love with the character. After screening all his scenes he left a very happy man. I-being a super fan of Frasier- was 100% geeked-out and kept pinching myself -doing that made me realize how much body fat I have... 13) Do you have any idea where the hellboy action figures will be sold as far as big retailers? I know comic stores will have them but how about stores like Gamestop? We are dealing with all the major chains, so I would say, much everywhere... 19) What specific portion of the fx work is being handled by Tippett Studios? I'm assuming the creature effects (Behemoth etc) -- how's their work on this so far? TIPPET is handling about 50% of the VFX, the second biggest vendor is ORPHANAGE, out of the bay area. Love 'em. Brilliant guys. The work, so far, is top-notch. Sammael and Behemoth are in Tippets hand, while the Ogdru Jahad is in Orphanage's. Also along for the ride are HIMANAI, EDEN, PIT CREW and others. I really enjoy working with these guys... Hit the link above for more of what he said! Here's a few snippets... I went in and met the other storyboard artist and a new concept artist, Paul Prischman and Jeff Rebner. They put us in a room to read the script. Now, I'm kind of a slow reader, especially with scripts - too much imagining and not enough reading. But this time it paid off. The other boarder finished before me and was able to choose his office first. Meaning he took the private nook and I was to share an office with two other guys, concept designer Ty Ellingson and the man himself - Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. It was super freaky, to talk to these guys whose comics I have read and admired for years. I got lunch, and del Toro assigned me a scene. Gave me some thumbnails to work with and off I went to pencil. It was nerve racking to have to draw a character with its creator right next to you. Hit the link above for the full interview! The role is played on screen by Doug Jones, a veteran of character parts in the likes of MEN IN BLACK II, THE TIME MACHINE, MIMIC and TV's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (as one of the Gentlemen in the classic "Hush" episode). Hyde Pierce, best-known of course for his role on TV's FRASIER, last ventured into the genre opposite Jack Nicholson in WOLF. (Thanks to http://www.fangoria.com/) November 18: Can Niles Survive Hell? "We're currently starting to work on the product," said Caplan, who added the set will be between 81 and 90 cards. Five promo cards have already been released, beginning last summer at Comic-Con International in San Diego. "The preview of the movie at the licensing show looked great," Caplan said. "We do expect autograph cards and there will definitely be piecework cards. Hellboy is so cool that it should be a cool set just because of that." Although movies with late-completing CGI effects are difficult to get into a card set, Caplan said he thinks Hellboy won't be too CGI-heavy to diminish the card set.
