Welcome to Unfilmable.com's "Hellboy" news page. While Hellboy is not a Lovecraft adaptation, it has been described as very Lovecraftian by many of it's fans. Some of the early character sketches and production artwork have a strong Lovecraftian feel to them. Director Guillermo Del Toro is set to direct the straight Lovecraft adaptation "At the Mountains of Madness" after it's release. Please submit news and links here. Past news is archived below. Caution: This page contains spoilers! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ October 31: HELLBOY panel at January Fango con Director Guillermo del Toro (BLADE II, DEVILS BACKBONE) and lead actor Ron (CRONOS) Perlman will make their East Coast Fango convention debuts at the next Weekend of Horrors, January 9-11, 2004 at the Meadowlands Sheraton. Of course, 'Hellboy' came up - here's a clip: JB: Where are you now in the production of Hellboy? GDT: We're done with the first phase of the editing. I'll have my director's cut ready to preview for the studio in the next couple of weeks. JB: Can we look forward to more insect imagery in Hellboy? GDT: You know, I don't know if there's any. JB: Oh, a first in your filmography. GDT: Someone asked me if there were any insects in The Devil's Backbone, and I said "I don't think so," but ultimately there were. There were not only the slugs - which aren't insects but bugs - but also the flies announcing Federico Luppi. (laughing) So, I don't know. I don't remember any insects in Hellboy - not so far. (laughs). JB: Just a couple more questions. What are you looking forward to after Hellboy? GDT: You know, what I'm looking forward to after Hellboy is putting out the DVD. JB: There's my final question. Can you give us a sneak peek? GDT: Hellboy is going to come out nice, because it's going to be a "2.5 DVD." We're going to have two big ones and one tiny one. There will be a CD - ROM with a lot of goodies. Hit the link below for the full interview! the official site for Sony Pictures' 'Hellboy' will receive
a full relaunch this Friday, aka Halloween night! The intro page has
been updated with a new logo of the graphic, as well as a 'special
message' from director Guillermo del Toro! Check it out at the link
below! (Thanks to http://www.countingdown.com/) October 28: Guillermo del Toro Provides Further 'Hellboy' Updates 'Hellboy' director Guillermo del Toro has logged onto the Hellsite message boards for another round of answers for the fans' questions. Here's the rundown: -The film is still being edited. The first trailer will most likely premiere in front of 'The Last Samurai' on December 5th, but they are pushing to have it ready by November 26th in front of Ron Howard's 'The Missing' (another Revolution Studios release). Either way, once the trailer is in theaters, Hellsite will post the 'sizzle reel' of preproduction footage that aired at the San Diego Comicon. The footage will be posted in 3 parts. -A teaser poster for the film will be in theaters this November, followed by character banners in December, and finally the long hyped poster by Drew Struzan should hit theaters in "January or so". -Guillermo confirmed what was first reported right here on CountingDown earlier in the week, that you can expect a full relaunch of Hellsite on Halloween night, aka this coming Friday, where you will find "a handful of tasty goodies"! -You can expect Hellboy's fighting style to "progress" in the movie. An example if this in del Toro's previous work includes the way that the earlier fights in 'Blade 2' skewed more balletic and choreographed, while the later ones were more brutal, like a street fight. No examples of the fights in 'Hellboy' were given, except that it should be noted that Hellboy doesn't win them all. Ouch. -In regard to the DVD, they are planning to use "2.5 disks", meaning 2 disks and an extra mini-disk (the contents of which were not revealed). Also, expect a 'Play All' feature for the special features, allowing you to watch all of them back-to-back. They will also include interviews with Spectral Motion's SFX head Mike Elizalde, as well as multiple 3D rotating looks at the maquettes they produced for the film. Series creator Mike Mignola, star Ron Perlman, and del Toro himself will all provide commentary tracks to the disk. That's all from del Toro this week. Among the updates will be a batch of new pictures, and a bunch of
other groovy new special features for you to poke at! Make sure to

all the latest developments on the film! (Thanks to http://www.countingdown.com/) Ain't-It-Cool-News received an update on what was shown at the NATO showcase. Here's the bits on Hellboy... ...Next up, came a rough look at the trailer for Hellboy, and I mean ROUGH. A lot of temp CGI and such, but wow... the make-up looks incredible. I'm ashamed to admit, I know almost nothing about the character, but I'm intrigued by what I saw. I think the big question is, can Ron Perlman carry the movie? Having been a fan of Perlman's for a long time, I think he can, but it'll be interesting to see the verdict when the grosses come in. One of the best aspects of this trailer is that you don't immediately see Hellboy, as the whole scenario is built up slowly, and it takes a while before it starts to get "strange". The trailer gives it a sort of "Men in Black" vibe, which I'm not sure is what they want to go for, but when the effects are in, I think this trailer will really intrigue audiences and delight fans.... The author of thirteen published novels including "AfterAge," "Mirror Me," "Final Impact," as well as the "Species" movie novelizations, "Aliens: Music of the Spears" and several "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" novels, Yvonne says she's very excited about working on the project. The novelization will be available from Simon and Schuster in mass market paperback and will be a must collectible for Hellboy fans as well as fans of Yvonne Navarro, who now has five novels scheduled to be published in 2004. Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, is extremely happy that Yvonne will be the writer for the novel adaptation. Here's how Simon and Schuster describe the movie: "In the final days of World War II, the Nazis attempt to use occult magic to aid their dying cause. The Allies raid the camp where the ceremony is taking place, but not before a demon -- Hellboy -- has already been conjured. Joining the Allied forces, Hellboy eventually grows to adulthood, serving the cause of good rather than evil and fighting against his own dark beginnings." You can visit Navarro's official website here! (Thanks to http://www.superherohype.com/) Wired Magazine is featuring a really interesting article on the companies that cut together trailers for movie studios. At the end, the Hellboy trailer is brought up - check it out: mOcean CREDITS: 8 Mile, The Salton Sea, Snatch, Underworld. NOW PLAYING: The trailer for the comic turned flick Hellboy. GETS THE NOD FOR: Splicing together the essential geek chic and mainstream-pleasing ingredients of Hellboy - a superheroic task. mOcean also pulled off the fast-paced, razor-sharp editing in the Underworld trailer, which stirred up enough chatter (and nabbed enough viewers) to get its B-movie material into A-list theaters. Cool stuff! Check out the full article at the link below! And thanks to 'SpydaWeb' for the heads up! Follow the link for everything. Hellboy hits theaters April 2nd. (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) October 18: Toy From Hell Contributing Sources: Celluloid Shockers When we were at Toy Fair this year and Mezco unveiled their toys for the vampire/werewolf flick Underworld, it was a very big moment for them seeing as how they had landed their very first line of movie toys. Though I haven't seen the Underworld toys in stores anywhere, I hear they're pretty cool. Well, Mezco's now gone leaps and bounds beyond sculpting Kate Beckinsale's ass from plastic, and have moved on to Ron Perlman's, instead. Seen here is the first pic of what Mezco's Hellboy toy will look like (sorry, not sure what mag they're scanned from), and damn is it badass! His trenchcoat is removable, and he comes with the gun and the zombie torso, as well as a battle-ravaged sculpt, though I'm not sure if that's a separate figure or not. Mezco is also creating Baby Hellboy, Kronen, and Abe Sapian toys, but this is most assuredly the baddest of the bad ass. Though a release date has not be specified, expect to see them hit shelves a few weeks before Hellboy hits theaters. Here's all the stories, finally collected in one place, including the Mignola classic "Squid of Man". (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) October 18: Latest Hellboy Message Board Update from del Toro Guillermo del Toro has once again answered a round of fan questions this week on the message boards, but sadly announces that from now on he can only appear to answer questions bi-weekly. Still better than not at all! Here's some of what was revealed in today's batch: -Guillermo has seen the short Mignola-inspired Hellboy animation currently making its rounds on the net, and is interested in using that style should an animated series be spun-off the movie. -The sets for 'Hellboy' are the largest Guillermo has ever worked with. -It is too early to tell if there will be a Director's Cut Hellboy DVD. Additionally, if they decide not to use actor Doug Jones' voice for the role of Abe Sapien, they may be contractually obligated to not put his voice tests on the DVD. -Expect series creator Mike Mignola to include some alternate cover art for the DVD upon its release. Failing that, it may be posted on Hellsite.com for fans to print out and use. That's all for this week. We'll keep you posted as more develops! And look for some more exclusive Hellboy news soon here on CountingDown.com! Source: Hellsite Message Boards (Thanks to http://www.countingdown.com/) October 18: HELLBOY GETS HALF A DISC Contributing Sources: CHUD Man, Hellboy sure was a great time, wasn't it? The action, the characters, the violence...Del Toro did everything he said he was going to do and more with this film, I can't wait to see what he has up his next sleeve... Oh, that's right, the movies not due out for another 6 months. So why the hell is there already news about the DVD? The world is just moving faster and faster nowadays... The scooper known simply as "Hellboy" (a man you can trust on this sort of thing) reported to the staff at Big Poppa CHUD that the plan for the DVD right now is a 2.5 disc set. That means 2 full DVDs and one smaller one (the size of, say, a Gamecube game), the features of which are unclear at this time. Might help if the movie comes out first, huh? Still, it's good to know they're already looking forward to how we're going to experience this movie in our living rooms, something I can't wait to do. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) October 18: Meet Hellboy Director Guillermo del Toro! (Damn... late on this one.) Source: Laser Blazer Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro will be signing copies of his film "Cronos" at Lazer Blazer in Los Angeles on Tuesday, October 14 from 6:30 to 8:30. Be sure to get your Hellboy questions ready and let us know if there's any news from the event! More details about the location and signing are up here. (Thanks to http://www.superherohype.com/) December 5th can't come soon enough. Why's that, you ask? Well, don't think I'm not jazzed to see Tom Cruise wield a samurai sword and kick some period-drama ass. It's just that I'm especially excited to see the trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy. Oh, you want me to repeat that? Yeah, the trailer for Hellboy is going to premiere with prints of The Last Samurai on December 5th. An inside source correlated with Sony (who's distributing the film April 2, 2004) dropped me a call via cell phone this afternoon and gave the Corner this exclusive scoop. He a source not to be reckoned with, that's as much as I can say. We all knew that we'd see a glimpse of Big Red shooting shit up on the big screen sometime before year's end. It was only a matter of when and with what movie. I believe the rumor mill pegged the trailer to premiere with The Matrix Revolutions, but I guess not. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) Director Guillermo del Toro, freshly recovered from the flu, has unleashed another wave of Hellboy answers for the fans via the message boards at Hellsite. Here's a quick rundown of the latest updates from the depths of Hell: -The Hellboy trailer, which is around 2 minutes long, will likely be attached to Tom Cruise's 'The Last Saumrai', hitting theaters December 5th. Del Toro also implies that the trailer should show up online in Quicktime and Windows Media as soon as late October/early November. -Actor Doug Jones has done his voice test work for the role of Abe Sapien, which he provided the physical performance for in Prague, but del Toro would like to experiement with the voice a bit before he makes a final decision on whether to use his vocals in the final sound mix or pursue actor David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) for the voice portion of the role. -Artist Drew Struzan (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter) is currently working on the Hellboy poster, which is set for release in theaters "Fall/Winter". Don't try to finagle the original art out of Struzan, though - del Toro already has dibs. -Guillermo's idea of a 'Fan CD', composed of original pieces of music by fans to be downloadable off the movie's official website, is not going over great with Sony, but it is being considered. -Sony and Revolution love the footage they've seen so far, but no sequel deal can be made until the box office numbers come in next April. Were a sequel to move forward, it would be co-authored by series creator Mike Mignola, and be "quite extravagant." Hit the link below to read it for yourself, and maybe post a question of your own!
