13: Cogswell talks Cthulhu
 |
Fangoria.com
has all the latest on writer/producer Grant
Cogswell's adaptation of Lovecraft's "The
Shadow Over Innsmouth", titled Cthulhu.
The film, budgeted at about $750,000, is currently
in post-production with a completion date set
for July. Grant doesn't reveal Cthulhu's monster
(saying that it's "classified material"),
he does say however, that FX lab Modern Digital
(Skeleton Man) is responsible for creating it.
He also talks about the films onscreen violence
and how he hopes they've "done it in
a way that takes it seriously." He
goes on to say, "I hate this parallel
movie world with offhand killing that doesnt
muss a hairdo or raise a pulse. Real violence
exists in an atmosphere of extremity, one which
a filmmaker is duty-bound |
| to
represent. Its terrible, and should be
truthfully rendered. If you saw someone killed,
it would physically shock you. I hope the violence
in our film has that sickening, repellent quality." |
Grant
also relates several stories about why they chose
to film in Oregon (instead of the East Coast), among
them, "A very nice Satanist [originally
from Astoria], with subcutaneous horns on his forehead,
told us that he believed Astoria to be the real
Innsmouth, citing about 40 uncanny resemblances
between the Oregon area and the fictional town."
and how there was, "
a Coast Guard
cutter tied up near a dock where we were shooting
called the Alert. In Lovecrafts story 'The
Call of Cthulhu,' the crew that discovers the lost
city of Rlyeh is on a merchant ship called
the Alert. We didnt notice until we were editing
the film. What the hell are the chances of that?"
The
films stars Jason Cottle, Tori Spelling and Cara
Buono, and with any luck, could see a theatrical
release in the fall of 2006...

April 6: New Colour Out of Space film in
the works!
Dustin Austen sends word that
Rottwieler Productions (out of Wooster, Ohio) are
currently in the script-writing stages on a new
adaptation of The Colour Out of Space. Dustin
states that they are interested in doing a faithful
rendering of Lovecraft's tale, but that some elements
of the story have been changed. The script will
also contain elements of John W. Campbell's "Who
Goes There?"
Dustin tells Unfilmable.com that the film will,
"
center on a group of Miskatonic science
and media students who are sent to document and
experiment with an mysterious asteroid that has
fallen on a small farm in Arkham. Of course the
infernal thing that lives in the well soon begins
spreading its otherworldly infection throughout
the group. As their minds and bodies begin to fall
apart they are forced to fear both the unspeakable
horror in the well as well as each other."
Production is slated for this summer, so look for
possible set visits by Unfilmable.com!

the meantime, you can visit Rottwieler Productions
