~ Found this small "At the Mountains of Madness" update on the Hellboy Message Board... Fan question: How advanced are works on "Mountain of Madness" adaptation? Is it your next (after HB) project? Any ideas on cast? Guillermo del Toro: First draft. Starting a rewrite soon. All I can tell you is: I want Adrian Brody to play a character called "Howard". (Thanks to Guillermo
del Toro) Do to the unfortunate
cancellation of Ivan's current project SPIRAL (for budgetary
reasons), he has begun working on a new adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's
"The Colour Out of Space"! The project, with the working
title: Colour of the Dark, is currently being co-written with
Ivo Gazzarrini. The treatment of the third film in the Beyond series, The 7th War (written by Enrico Saletti) is almost ready, and Ivan hopes that shooting will start by the beginning of 2005. The 7th War will Ivan's first 35mm feature film! (Thanks to Ivan Zuccon) August 29: Graveyard: New review added! A new review has been
added for the Lovecraft inspired short film, "Graveyard"
(which was just released on DVD). Graveyard was directed by Ed
Brisson and stars Toren Atkinson (from The Darkest of the Hillside
Thickets). The review is courtesy of frequent Unfilmable.com
contributor Christian Matzke! (Special thanks to Christian
Matzke) Ivan Zuccon's "The Shunnned House" (and possibly "The Darkness Beyond" and "Unknown Beyond") will be screening at the Festival of Horror Cinema, Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre (Argentina). Click here for more! (Thanks to Ivan Zuccon) August 28: Ash Gets Some
Respect Ash may not be fighting Freddy and Jason in the upcoming sequel, but he has gotten his likeness on a really cool statue. The statue was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the landmark film. Check here to for availability. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) August 28: Fangoria Blood Drive short film search launches As reported in the current issue of FANGORIA (#226), the magazine and video producer/distributor Koch Vision are teaming to sponsor The FANGORIA Blood Drive, a short horror film competition in which the winning entries will be featured on an exclusive BLOOD DRIVE compilation DVD, due in May 2004... ...The shorts must run no longer than 13 minutes, and the contest is open to professionals and beginners alike, utilizing all major formats. Filmmakers should go to http://www.fangoriablooddrive.com/ for a complete list of rules, deadlines and other news on the contest, which officially launches September 1. The Blood Drive DVD will also sport exclusive magazine-style features produced by New York-based Longview Entertainment, including on-camera interviews with genre greats Clive Barker, Rob Zombie and FX guru/producer Stan Winston, wholl offer a tour of his shop. Click here for more. (Thanks to http://www.fangoria.com/) I've finally gotten around to updating The Hellish Herald (Hellboy) and The Sixth Dominion (Clive Barker cinema) pages. Check 'em out here
and here. Preparation for second filming schedule almost finished In the first half of September the "The Unnamable"-production steps into the second and final round. The schedule includes two big historical sets and additional dialogue with Randolph Carter and his friend Joel Manton. (Thanks to http://www.the-unnamable.com/) Unfilmable.com's interviews are on a roll! Click here to read my interview with Azathoth (evil tape) director Luigi Seviroli. Not familiar with the short, Azathoth (evil tape)? Check out Christian Matzke's review here! I have many more interviews planned as well as a guest interviewer who will be helping out! Look for more soon. (Thanks to Luigi Seviroli) August 26: Casonetto's
Last Song update! Derek M. Koch's adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "Casonetto's Last Song" now has an official website! The short film will make it premier at this years H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. Check it out here. Look for a "Casonetto's Last Song" image gallery coming soon! (Thanks to Derek M. Koch) It's really strange, methinks...I was on my way to work this morning, wondering what Filmax had in mind to help promote Beyond Re-Animator now that the film is done and the reviews (like mine here) are rolling in. I come home and this exists. Perhaps I willed it into being? The boys over at Bloody Disgusting got word of Filmax's brand-spanking new site for Beyond Re-Animator, the highly anticipated second sequel in the Lovecraft-inspired series. The site itself is pretty sparkly, complete with lots of (slow-loading) Flash and plot details, along with a homepage image that would look a helluva lot better as the poster than the one we've been seeing. Get on over to the site by clicking here, but be careful if you try and download a wallpaper, it took me to an error page that I'm pretty sure was swearing at me in Spanish... (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) August 25: Haunted Palace and Humanoids From The Deep Re-released on DVD... Haunted Palace/Tower
of London (1963/62) Haunted is a loose adaptation of Lovecraft's 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward', in which a warlock places a curse on the town right before they burn him alive, and centuries later his ancestor arrives to finish the job. Tower is a tale of Richard III, haunted by the ghosts of all those he killed on his way to becoming the King of England. Buy it here! Humanoids From The
Deep (1996) A group of genetically altered serial killers (now there's a good idea...) escape their lab and enter the see (they were altered with fish DNA, of course). Their mutations are expounded upon by toxic waste, and they soon end up in a coastal town where they kill the men and mate with the women. Quite nasty remake of the 1980 original. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) Here's a tentative schedule for the 10th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. PORTLAND OREGON SCHEDULE October 9-10-11-12, 2003 GUESTS Actor: Jeffrey

The mini film festival runs from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m., August 23-24. Click here for more details. (Thanks to http://www.fangoria.com/) August 19: Freddy vs Jason vs Evil Dead Well one rumor has been shot down before it even began. Last week the first fanboy talk sprung up about "Evil Dead" hero Ash appearing in a potential sequel - now that talk has just been scrapped (and in style) by the man himself. 'Richter' has the scoop: "I recently had an e-mail talk with Mr. Bruce Campbell about rumors flying around revolving his possible involvement in a sequel to Freddy v Jason, which is being called Freddy vs Jason vs Evil Dead. This rumor is not true, but his exact words were,"If you believe that, I've got some ocean front property outside of Phoenix you might be interested in...". (Thanks to http://www.darkhorizons.com/) I've received word from scriptwriter Alex Weimer that a new (first) draft of "The Haunter Of The Dark" screenplay (co-written by Christian Giegerich) may be ready by November. This draft will be a total departure from the previous versions. He said that he was unsure how the project will proceed from that point on. Alex also had this to say in regards to the previous attempt(s) at filming the project: ~"Yes, we have been in pre-production once, with several drafts of a script that have been written during the years 1999-2001. There have also been a lot of designing jobs, i.e. for props, sets, etc. and artwork has been built... But due to creative differences with the production companies involved the project has been cancelled only months away from shooting."~ More as it becomes available. (Thanks to Alex Weimer) August 18: Spanish editions of Ivan's Beyond films Ivan Zuccon sent along two great cover images from the Spanish editions of "The Darkness Beyond" and "Unknown Beyond". They are scheduled to be released in September by the Imagen Death label. No feature information is available at this time. The Darkness Beyond cover can be found here. The Unknown Beyond cover can be found here. (Thanks to Ivan Zuccon) August 18: New film reviews added! I've added two new, very in depth reviews to the reviews page. They are for the Vincent Price film, "The Haunted Palace" and "City Under the Sea" (War Gods of the Deep also starring Vincent Price). These reviews are courtesy of Iain McLachlan, and come from his great website CHROMA-NOIZE. Special thanks goes to Iain for letting me use these great reviews. August 18: Herbert West reviewed again Creature-corner's own Johnny Butane reviewed Brian Yuzna's Beyond Re-Animator from it's recent showing at Montreal's Fantasia Fest. Check it out here. The film continues to make the festival circuit as well. Look for it to play at the London Fright Fest on August 22nd. The Lovecraftian film, Malefique plays the following day. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/ and http://www.gorezone.net/) August 18: Bride re-released Brian Yuzna's Re-Animator sequel, Bride of Re-Animator will be re-released on DVD August 19th. This is a bare bones version released by Artisan, not a re-release of the Pioneer special edition. List price is $14.98. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) Brain Damage Films has released Ivan Zuccon's incredible Lovecraft adaptation, "The Shunned House" on DVD/VHS earlier than expected! The original street date was to be September 9th. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend that you check it out. "The Shunned House" is easily one of the finest Lovecraft films ever released, and also ranks with the classic Italian horror films of the past. Click here to read Christian Matzke's review of the film. Click here
for full details or to purchase the DVD/VHS. (Thanks to Ivan Zuccon
and Darrin Ramage) According to Thibaut Brix, amateur director Charles Dexter Ward (Belliou La Fumée) has expressed interest in adapting Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu" as a proposed trilogy. Unfortunately, no further information is available at this time. (Thanks to Thibaut Brix) At long last, Unfilmable.com has conducted it's second interview! This time with Kühle Luft (Cool Air) director Mike Neun. Mike has provided some really great information, as well as good look into the word of independent cinema! Check it out here. The next Unfilmable.com interview, with Azathoth (evil tape) director Luigi Seviroli, is coming soon... (Thanks to Mike Neun) August 13: Malefique wins... Eric Valettes "Malefique" shared Best International Feature Film prize (Public Prize) with Cabin Fever at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal. Click here for a complete list of winners. (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) Here's an update from "Manuscript d'un fou" (Manuscript of insane) director, Thibaut BRIX . According to Thibaut, the short film (28 min.) will be subtitled as soon as the English translation is complete. One possible English title may be "My Brother's Diary". The story involves, "A woman discovers a manuscript written by her mad brother, where he explains a terrible adventure in Vosges mountains (France)...". You can find pictures
and further information (in French) here.
Has anyone seen (or heard of) a short film called "Fernando Birri meets H.P. Lovecraft" by Agnieszka Taborska and Marcin Gizycki (I am Providence: A story of H.P. Lovecraft and his city)? I read about it in the "I am Providence" section of Lurker in the Lobby (pg 165-168), and would be interested in seeing it (or at least learning more about it). Any help would be appreciated.... As always, send correspondence here. August 11: Manuscript of insane? I received an email today from callofktulu@yahoogroupes.fr containing news on "Manuscript of insane", an amateur film 'inspired in a remote way by the universe of Lovecraft'. I've added a page containing the information from that email, as well as the information from the website: http://www.hplovecraft-fr.com/ The information was translated using AltaVista's Babel Fish Translation Service. It is, at this time, a little confusing... I've emailed Thibaut BRIX for further information, and will post it when it's received. Click here for more. (Thanks to Thibaut BRIX) Click here to read an official Dream-Quest update from Edward Martin III. Good news is contained
within, including possible DVD contents! (Thanks to Edward Martin III) August 11: Freddy vs. Jason vs.... Ash? There might not be to much interest in this one for die-hard Lovecraft film fans, but I thought I'd mention it..... According to Creaturecorner.com, Evil Dead's Ash (Bruce Campbell) is being considered for the sequel to the upcoming Freddy vs. Jason film. Click here for the full article. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) Christian Matzke found an interesting link to a play entitled, Night Gaunts, An Entertainment based on the Life and Writings of H.P. Lovecraft. It was performed in Providence, Rhode Island in 1988 and 1990. Carl Johnson played the part of H.P. Lovecraft, and can be seen here in several photos. The entire play can be read here. (Thanks to Christian
Matzke) Nick Gains has added a couple of new production sketches from his upcoming animated adaptation of "The Hound". One of them is a great image of The High Priest of Leng! Check them out here. (Thanks to Nick Gains) Pickman's Model director, Giovanni Furore, sent along the following information to add to my previous update. Cast information: Pickman is played by
Lorenzo Mori I've also added an image gallery with pictures provided by Giovanni! Check out the image gallery here. (Thanks to Giovanni Furore) According to director Ted Mowery, filming on "The Charnel Gospel" has been postponed to devote more time to pre-production and rehearsals. Filming was to start this weekend. He went on to say that "he hopes the delay will result in a better finished product. My sincere apologies go out to those looking forward to seeing the film at this year's HP Lovecraft Film Festival". He will also begin working on a new trailer soon. (Thanks to Ted Mowery) Another review of Beyond Re-Animator from the Fantasia Film Festival. This one courtesy of Creature-corner.com. Check it out here. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) DarkWater FilmWorks has added "The Lurking Fear" to it's list of upcoming Lovecraft projects. The feature film (80 min) will be directed by Brian Brethauer. It joins "The Unnamable", which is based on both The Unnamable and The Statement of Randolph Carter, as one of DarkWater's upcoming productions. DarkWater FilmWorks previously adapted the story "What the Moon Brings". According to Brian, it will be available on DVD shortly with extra features pending. Click here to visit DarkWater FilmWorks. (Thanks to Brian Brethauer) Click here to read Chud.com's reviews of Beyond Re-Animator and Maléfique. These are from the resent screenings at the Fantasia Film Festival. (Thanks to http://www.chud.com/) I've received a great deal of information on the Italian production of Pickman's Model from director Giovanni Furore. Director Giovanni Furore attends the film school NUCT in Rome, as do his friends, Enrico Bortignon (director of photography) and Alberto Marchiori (camera operator). NUCT was not interested in producing the short ... so the independent production (which follows the original story) started with a budget of 1000 EURO's (roughly $1000). The film was shot in digital with a Sony pd150 and edited it with a power Mac g4 and finalcutpro. It was edited in Rome with the help of Giovanni's friend Emanule Peter Patrioli Giovanni is currently finishing up the audio. The audio that was recorded on the set didn't quite work, so Giovanni and Mario Amabile have re-created a new sfx track including new dialogue. He went on to say that the Dolby digital track is "very suggestive and full of atmosphere". Francesco Di Mauro is working on the score (originally to be done by Mario Amabile). For the photo of the creature, Giovanni has enlisted the help of his friend, Michelangelo Neri Orliani. There is an official website in the works, and the short should be coming soon. Crew information: Directed by Giovanni
Furore (Thanks to Giovanni Furore) Interested in Anime? Franklin Hummel sent me the following link to the White Radish website. White Radish has produced several Lovecraftian short films. They are "Cutethulhu" (which can be seen here), "The Item" (view the trailer here), and "The Evil at Tentacle High". Cutethulhu contains a certain you-know-who like you've never seen him before! You can check out White Radish's official website here. (Thanks to Franklin Hummel) From Moviebrats.com (translation courtesy of babelfish): The Haunter OF The Dark Cinema feature, Mystery/Horror, approx.. 90 min 1935: The search for
a good Story the reporter Lillibridge encounters okkulten sparkling
wines, which had lived once in a church in the midst of the city on
the remnants. Story & film script by Alex Weimer and Christian Giegerich after the narration of the same name of H.P. Lovecraft (Thanks to http://www.moviebrats.com/) From Gorezone.net: ~Saw a couple of films yesterday, four more precisely. Director Eric Valette was there to present his French film, MALEFIQUE. Four convicts living in the same cell find a book which they believe will help them escape... black magic, death and damnation ensues. Visually striking and with an involving storyline, this is kinda of CUBE set in a gothic prison. There's one scene in particular that all gorehounds will love which involves someone being suspended in the air and getting all of his bone twisted and broke!~ You can find another review of Malefique here, courtesy of Ain't It Cool News. (Thanks to http://www.gorezone.net/) I came across an unexpected surprise while checking out a few forgotten links... According to the official website of "The Haunter of the Dark": ~This project is currently
categorized as being in development. The rest of the website has been taken down, with only the homepage remaining. Check it out here. Sascha Renninger sent along several exclusive images from the upcoming period adaptation of "The Unnamable". These images will appear on Unfilmable.com and no where else! You can check out the new image gallery here! In other Unnamable news, Sascha has informed me that the last scenes will be shot in the first week of September. Also, the earlier version of The Unnamable [the official website has been taken down] that was made is now edited and will appear as bonus film on the planned Unnamable DVD. More as it becomes available! Special thanks to Sascha Renninger for these images. August 3: Beyond Re-Animator at Fantasia 2003 From Gorezone.net: ~Last night i saw Brian Yuzna's BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR and i have to say that it is without a doubt the best horror film of the year so far! Forget the god awful trailer, the film is pure 80's horror entertainment! Jeffrey Combs is back as Herbert West and things goes crazy and gory in a Spanish prison. Involving story, good acting and bloody amazing fx makes this a must see! Too bad Lions Gate has pushed its release to December.~ (Thanks to http://www.gorezone.net/) August 3: New "Enter the Dagon" images New images are online from today's shoot. You can check them out here. (Thanks to Scott Jerry
Lawrence) The trailer for Aaron Lucchesi's "The Picture in the House" is now online! Check it out here! (Thanks to Aaron Lucchesi) August 2: Clive Barker and Hellboy I've finally gotten around to updating The Hellish Herald and The Sixth Dominion. Check 'em out here

Stuart Gordon and composer Richard Band will also be signing copies of La La's Re-Animator and From Beyond soundtrack as well as Elite's Millenium Edition of Re-Animator. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) Chud.com reviews the new "50th Anniversary Edition" DVD edition of "The Thing from Another World". The film, based on John Campbells story Who Goes There?, was remade by John Carpenter in 1982. Special features on the 1951 edition include Interactive Menus and a Theatrical Trailer. Read the review here. (Thanks to http://www.chud.com/) The film "Malefique" gets a favorable review courtesy of CreatureCorner.com. Here is an excerpt of the review: ~Fans of H.P Lovecraft could possibly see this as the one successful adaptation of a book that the master never wrote. The atmosphere is thick with forbidden knowledge, and unnamable horrors.~ Read the rest of the review here. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) August 1: Clive Barker's Lovecraftian films While browsing through Douglas Winter's book "The Dark Fantastic" I came across this mention of one of Clive's early experiments in film: ~Their [Clive and Phil Rimmer] first collaboration, whose title is long forgotten, found them creating footage of murky atmospheres, shot in stop-motion, with an Action Man figure as their hero. 'It was a violent, nasty little Lovecraftian thing in which our Action Man went up against some terrible plasticine monster,' Clive says. 'It was set in a graveyard, and there was this terrible monster and a lot of fire and destruction.' The film involved 'a lot of sludge dripping down steps,'~ It also mentions the Lovecraftian quality of the creatures in the stories 'The Skins of the Fathers', 'The Last Illusion' [which is the basis for the film "Lord of Illusions"], and an un-produced original screenplay American Horror. Franklin Hummel went into the Lovecraftian qualities of "Lord of Illusions" in an email he sent me recently, saying 'Toward the beginning when [Swann is attacking Nix], [Nix] says something like Do you really want to see things as they are? and cast a spell which makes [Swann] see his friends as yechy crawly things. A touch of Lovecraft in this. The blurb on the video and DVD even notes there is a element of Lovecraft here. There might be others in the films as well (the idea of real magic being seen by most people as fake magic)" (Thanks to Douglas E. Winter and Franklin Hummel) August 1: Sci Fi sets Beyond Re-Animator premiere The Sci Fi Channel has announced a debut airdate for Brian Yuznas BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR: the sequel will premiere Saturday, October 4 at 9 p.m. Itll be followed by a showing of the original RE-ANIMATOR at 11 p.m. BEYOND is also playing at Montreals Fantasia festival August 1 and 3, and hits video from Lions Gate December 30.
