Silver Key "Yes, believe it or not - but love it either way - this is a tribute to one of the greatest horror authors of all time: H.P. Lovecraft, the man who created the creature Cthulhu! In fact, the title of this compilation, ´The Outsider,´ is also the title of one of Lovecraft´s stories! Though long dead, Lovecraft´s memory lives on in his countless works, and now also in this tribute by a handful of dark ambient, experimental, and noise projects! And, indeed, who better to paint an aural portrait of Lovecraft´s written works than the artists who represent the truly nightmarish genres of music! Formerly released on Somnambulant Corpse Recordings in 2002 and packaged in a DVD case, this compilation has now been re-released at the dead end of 2004 on Somnambulant Records, packaged in a standard jewel case with altered artwork. (The original DVD-case edition is out of print, having long since disappeared from the shelves of any retailers and record labels who originally carried the item in their catalogs.) ... ´For although nepenthe has calmed me, I know always that I am an outsider; a stranger in this century and among those who are still men. This I have known ever since I stretched out my fingers to the abomination within that great gilded frame; stretched out my fingers and touched a cold and unyielding surface of polished glass´ (from Lovecraft´s story, ´The Outsider,´ as quoted from the artwork)." (Thanks to http://www.beyondthewallofsleep.com) December 24: Jay Woelfel's The Dark between The Stars Fangoria.com recently ran a story about Beyond Dream's Door director Jay Woelfel's current project, The Dark between The Stars. No mention was made about any Lovecraft connection, but it seemed promising... I decided is was worth looking into, so I went directly to the source, director Jay Woelfel. According to Jay, the tone of the
film is indeed "Lovecraft like", and it seems to fit in
very well with Lovecraft's views of Cosmic Horror. From fangoria.com: "Like GHOST LAKE, this is much more of a BEYOND DREAM'S DOOR type of horror/monster film," Woelfel tells Fango, "For most of my time in California, that kind of movie has been out of fashion, but, perhaps thanks in part to the success of Japanese-style horror and films like THE OTHERS, it is now commercial to make serious and complex horror films again. I'm glad to still be here to make them after surviving the lean years and lesser projects I had to take while the type of horror I like and perhaps do best was 'out.'" "We are shooting on 35mm with a film finish, and it is the largest budget I've ever had for a fiction feature," continues Woelfel, "The story deals with dreams and how they relate to the power of faith, shamanism and authentic creation myths of the Native Americans. The movie's monster is both unique-looking and unique in what it does. All the 'name' leads seem excited about the script and the different types of parts they are playing. It will be cool to show a different side of these actors to their fans." The cast includes Ken (Dawn of the Dead) Foree, Tricia Helfer, Corin Nemec, Jason Brooks and Josh Hammond. "Tim Thomerson has agreed to be in it," Woelfel adds, "though he has a film shooting in Canada at almost the same time which may ultimately conflict." The film was scripted by Jay and Scott Spears. III) MAURER/KLAUSMAN FILMS is proud to announce the upcoming release of their newest film, Beyond the Wall of Sleep. This VFX soaked, Lovecraftian period piece showcases the acting talents of William Sanderson (Blade Runner, HBO's Deadwood), Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead), Rick Dial (Sling Blade), and is co-written/directed by Barrett J Klausman and Thom Maurer. LOS ANGELES, CA. -- Visceral Pictures and Triple "B" Productions is announcing its upcoming release of a Maurer/Klausman film: Beyond the Wall of Sleep. Produced by Jhano Ajamian, Jim Bolden, and Koko Polosajian, this 35mm feature film opens the porthole once again into the twisted mind of H.P. Lovecraft, author of dozens of early 1900's horror/sci-fi short stories. The film combines the writing/directing talents of Thom Maurer and Barrett J Klausman, a team that has been working in the horror film genre for the past decade. Through sheer force of will, they have pulled together a cast of cult favorites: William Sanderson (Blade Runner, HBO's Deadwood), Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead, From Dusk till Dawn), Rick Dial (Sling Blade), Marco St. John (Thelma and Louise), and Bobby Jacoby (Tremors 1 & 3) amongst others to bring to the screen this tale of an unknown entity crossing over into our world and wreaking havoc on an asylum for the criminally insane. Beyond the Wall of Sleep, while finishing its 3rd year of production, is long awaited by Lovecraft and horror fans alike. For more information

to screen at Sundance! Late Bloomer has already screened at the following festivals: Lake Placid Film Festival
(Audience Award Best Short Film) Here is what the press is saying about Late Bloomer: "...The filmmakers
take on this fascinating subject is not only bold and honest, it is
also utterly hilarious, thanks mostly to the deliciously creepy voice-over
work of screenwriter Chapman. As the inner voice of the boy most affected
by Miss Lovecrafts wild revelations, Chapman sounds like a deranged
poet whos clearly spent too much time studying that other Lovecraft
while in the asylum. His fevered hysteria during the boys ultimate
breakdown rivals that of the great Gene Wilder for sheer simulated delirium,
a true spectacle indeed..." H.P. Lovecraft
goes to 7th grade Sex Ed class. Cute funny film is
a treat to horror fans. Macneill's defined
sense of color and imagery lends real beauty to his work. Late Bloomer
steers Lovecraft in a frighteningly original direction. Craig Macneill's
film succeeds on every level. There were many
great short films, but Late Bloomer is the one I
would recommend this year! The audience
didn't move, except to breathe, laugh and apply bug spray. You can visit the following sites (North Lake Films, The Sundance Film Festival, The Pumpkin Pie Show and One Ring Zero) for more information about Late Bloomer, director Craig Macneill and writer Clay McLeod Chapman. (Thanks to Clay McLeod

Ever wonder what it was like on the set of John Carpenter's classic, The Fog? Dread Central's new bi-weekly article gives you the opportunity to find out. Writer Sean Clark has visited some of the most memorable locations from the production, and is now writing about them in Horror's Hallowed Grounds. Other classic films will follow... Here's a clip from the first article: "In 1980 Avco Embassy Pictures released The Fog. This would be the sixth film and fourth feature by director John Carpenter. Expectations were high after the success of his prior film Halloween that had just become the highest grossing independent film of all time. The idea of The Fog came to John while on vacation with co-writer & producer Debra Hill at Stonehenge. John saw a fog bank in the distance and imagined what if something was alive inside it. John and Debra decided to turn the idea into a screenplay that would be an old fashioned ghost story loosely based on true events that took place off the coast of Santa Barbara in the 1700's. The Fog was shot entirely in California during the months of April & May 1979 for a modest budget of $1.1 million dollars. In this article we will be examining the locations used to create this horror classic and show how a film like this is put together in the editing room. Additionally, we'll also look at how some of these locations look today..." The rest of the article can be found here. (Thanks to http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/) A new adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound is in the works. The film is currently in pre-production with a mid/late January-early February start date. Director Woodruff Laputka (not Janie Gaiger as previously stated) hopes to have the film ready in time for the 2005 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. Watch this space for updates! (Thanks to Janie Gaiger) Dread Central recently looked into the rumor that the fourth Re-Animator film (House of Re-Animator) was in the works. The rumor started when actor Jeffrey Combs mentioned that his agent brought up the idea of slipping into West's shoes one more time (see November 29th). Here's what Stuart Gordon had to say about the project... "There's nothing much to report on 'House.' Brian Yuzna doesn't seem to want to go so political," Gordon told Dread Central. "He's afraid it would seem dated in a few years. Maybe the fans could help change his mind." Gordon is currently working
on his adaptation of Jack Ketchum's Ladies' Night... (Thanks to http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/) December 6: Evil Dead 4 still on... According to an interview with Zap 2 it, Sam Raimi says that Evil Dead 4 is "still in the cards". Read on for the scoop... "When he's all
finished with the "Spider-Man" franchise, director
Sam Raimi thinks he'd like to go back to his horror roots and add to
his "Evil Dead" series." "I definitely want to do it and I think after -- whenever the Spider-Man jobs end -- I would love to dig in on that," Raimi says. "That's something I'm really looking forward to." Raimi is working on a remake of his 1981 "Evil Dead" (as producer), but doesn't plan to direct it... According to a website sent to me by Lovecraft Film researcher Frank Hummel, director Ken Waller and producer Ken Verdon are working on a independent production based on Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". The tagline gives the impression that the film will be shot in a period setting, but no further information is available... I hope to have more soon. (Thanks to Frank Hummel) Carollus Films Limited is currently producing a film titled The Repairer of Reputations. The film (possibly based on The King in Yellow) is listed as coming soon. No further information is available via the official website. More as it becomes available... (Thanks to Frank Hummel) December 3: Fog wrangler announced... Variety announced yesterday that Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) will direct Revolution Studios remake of John Carpenter's The Fog. Dread Central reports that, "Wainwrights' idea for the film involves fleshing out the story that was only mentioned in the original, and I guess that's not really a bad thing though part of what made the first one work so well was the small amount of info both the characters and the viewers actually had about what was going on. Apparently, the special effects in the film will be utilized so titular fog is more of an actual character..." The remake is set to role in March, for a release next October 21st.
