Dread Central reports that singer/actor Chris Isaak may have a small role in Rupert Wainwright's (Stigmata) remake of John Carpenter's The Fog. According to Chris Isaak (at a recent CD signing), "he might have a small role in a new version of an old horror movie called Fog."

December 30: Now it's Fangoria's turn...

The latest to jump on the horror TV bandwagon is none other than Fangoria magazine. Although it was just announced, FangoriaTV will launch next month with "an all-new lineup of genre programming". It will be carried on In Demand’s INHD cable service, as well as National Lampoon Networks. Availability is expected to expand over the next two years.

FangoriaTV’s January 2005 debut shows will include the reality series Ghost Stories and Trailer Park (hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon). Screamography (Biography-style documentaries hosted by Felissa Rose; early subjects include Clive Barker), The Craft (the nuts and bolts of movie magic) and a short film showcase (send in those Lovecraft shorts!) are currently in production as well.

"Yes, believe it or not - but love it either way - this is a tribute to one of the greatest horror authors of all time: H.P. Lovecraft, the man who created the creature Cthulhu! In fact, the title of this compilation, ´The Outsider,´ is also the title of one of Lovecraft´s stories! Though long dead, Lovecraft´s memory lives on in his countless works, and now also in this tribute by a handful of dark ambient, experimental, and noise projects! And, indeed, who better to paint an aural portrait of Lovecraft´s written works than the artists who represent the truly nightmarish genres of music! Formerly released on Somnambulant Corpse Recordings in 2002 and packaged in a DVD case, this compilation has now been re-released at the dead end of 2004 on Somnambulant Records, packaged in a standard jewel case with altered artwork. (The original DVD-case edition is out of print, having long since disappeared from the shelves of any retailers and record labels who originally carried the item in their catalogs.) ... ´For although nepenthe has calmed me, I know always that I am an outsider; a stranger in this century and among those who are still men. This I have known ever since I stretched out my fingers to the abomination within that great gilded frame; stretched out my fingers and touched a cold and unyielding surface of polished glass´ (from Lovecraft´s story, ´The Outsider,´ as quoted from the artwork)."

The festival features scary movies you can sink your teeth into...to give you that winter chill...and every one was filmed in New York State by area filmmakers!

Each day of the festival will highlight one of the Capitol Region's premier fright film directors, beginning with:

January 22: THE FILMS OF BRUCE G. HALLENBECK
Veteran Kinderhook filmmaker Bruce G. Hallenbeck will be on hand to introduce and discuss his feature films and to premiere his latest effort, LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT.

10:00 AM
VAMPYRE (EI Cinema, 1990) Inspired by the 1931 surrealist masterpiece VAMPYR by Danish filmmaker Carl Dreyer, VAMPYRE is a macabre and brooding tale of a 19th century village on the edge of extinction, plagued by a grim and abominable horror. Filmed in East Nassau and Kinderhook. Running time: 88 minutes.

12:00 PM
FANGS (EI Cinema, 1992) Hosted by beautiful Hammer Films starlet Veronica Carlson (DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE), FANGS is a "shockumentary" that takes a provocative, entertaining look at the history of vampires in the movies--how these cinematic "creatures of the night" have evolved from year to year, decade to decade, and why they continue to fascinate and frighten us generation after generation. Filmed in East Nassau. Running time: 58 minutes.

2:00 PM
LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (Pagan Productions, 2004) The world premiere of Hallenbeck's ninth feature, an action/adventure/horror movie that combines elements of THE X FILES, THE AVENGERS and the works of fantasy master H.P. Lovecraft in a tale of two people who fight the dark forces of evil in today's world. Filmed in Kinderhook, Chatham and Averill Park. Running time: 90 minutes.

January 23: THE FILMS OF JOE BAGNARDI
Action and horror specialist Joe Bagnardi of Malta will present three of his locally produced features.

10:00 AM
SHADOW TRACKER VAMPIRE HUNTER (EI Cinema, 1998) Shadow Tracker is a man of mythic stature whose sole mission is to hunt down and destroy the undead, no matter how far it takes him, no matter how bloodthirsty the enemy. From the death-infested jungles of Vietnam 30 years ago to a rural upstate town today, he stalks his most evil and sadistic prey ever: a war buddy turned into an unstoppable vampire. Filmed in Saratoga Springs, Troy, Albany, Schenectady and Malta. Running time: 120 minutes.

12:30 PM
BLOOD OF THE WEREWOLF (Brimstone Entertainment, 2002) A three-part anthology film about lycanthropy...one Gothic, one urban and one with a science-fiction twist. As directed by Bagnardi, Bruce G. Hallenbeck and Kevin Lindenmuth, these are not your father's werewolves! Filmed in Kinderhook, Chatham, New York City and Rensselaer. Running time: 80 minutes.

2:30 PM
EDGE OF REALITY (Brimstone Entertainment, 2004) Another three-part anthology, hosted by Bruce G. Hallenbeck, of stories with a TWILIGHT ZONE feel. One concerns a man who won't stay dead, another is about a man haunted by his "double" and the third features two hunters on the track of the most elusive prey of all...Bigfoot. Filmed in Hannacroix, Malta and Kinderhook. Running time: 90 minutes.

January 29: THE FILMS OF JEFF KIRKENDALL

Latham resident Jeff Kirkendall will introduce his feature THE TEMPTRESS and present several of his short horror films.

12:00 PM
NIGHT THERAPY (Very Scary Productions, 1998) A psychiatrist talks to three patients about their encounters with a disembodied head. Filmed in Latham. Running time: 25 minutes.

1:00 PM
THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER (Very Scary Productions, 1998) "The Voice" is an evil entity that speaks to a young girl one Halloween night over a dead channel on the radio. Filmed in Latham. Running time: 28 minutes.

2:00 PM
3 TO MURDER (Very Scary Productions, 1999) The "prequel" to Kirkendall's feature-length THE TEMPTRESS, this short film concerns a gang of criminals who have their sights set on three women living in a house on the outskirts of a small town. Filmed in Latham and West Sand Lake. Running time: 42 minutes.

4:00 PM
THE TEMPTRESS (Very Scary Productions, 2002) Kirkendall's horror feature follows the exploits of three female vampires living a relatively subdued suburban existence--until the evil and powerful Angelique pays the ladies a visit. Filmed in West Sand Lake, Latham and Albany. Running time: 69 minutes.

JANUARY 30: THE FILMS OF BRANDON BETHMANN AND ERIC SZMYR

Albany's own Brandon Bethmann and Eric Szmyr will introduce their two horror features.

10:00 AM
RAISING HELL (Sub Rosa, 2002) Using the Keys of Solomon, an incumbent Governor summons up a demon to eliminate all those who oppose him. Filmed in Albany at the South Mall Plaza and other locations. Running time: 90 minutes.

12:00 PM
THE RISEN (Sub Rosa, 2004) Fueled by his own ambition and greed, a rogue CIA agent is set to unleash an evil on this planet like nothing man has ever seen: he has devised a plan that threatens the fate of all humanity as he opens the door to something not of this earth. Filmed in Albany. Running time: 90 minutes.

2:00 PM PANEL DISCUSSION WITH THE FILMMAKERS

All of the filmmakers from the festival will be on hand to take questions and answers from the audience, and to close out the festival.

December 24: Jay Woelfel's The Dark between The Stars

Fangoria.com recently ran a story about Beyond Dream's Door director Jay Woelfel's current project, The Dark between The Stars. No mention was made about any Lovecraft connection, but it seemed promising...

I decided is was worth looking into, so I went directly to the source, director Jay Woelfel.

According to Jay, the tone of the film is indeed "Lovecraft like", and it seems to fit in very well with Lovecraft's views of Cosmic Horror.

He went on to mention that his last film, Ghost Lake (to be released by Velocity next summer), has several Lovecraft elements as well. He is also shopping around the special edition DVD package of his first film, Beyond Dream's Door for possible release...

From fangoria.com:

"Like GHOST LAKE, this is much more of a BEYOND DREAM'S DOOR type of horror/monster film," Woelfel tells Fango, "For most of my time in California, that kind of movie has been out of fashion, but, perhaps thanks in part to the success of Japanese-style horror and films like THE OTHERS, it is now commercial to make serious and complex horror films again. I'm glad to still be here to make them after surviving the lean years and lesser projects I had to take while the type of horror I like and perhaps do best was 'out.'"

"We are shooting on 35mm with a film finish, and it is the largest budget I've ever had for a fiction feature," continues Woelfel, "The story deals with dreams and how they relate to the power of faith, shamanism and authentic creation myths of the Native Americans. The movie's monster is both unique-looking and unique in what it does. All the 'name' leads seem excited about the script and the different types of parts they are playing. It will be cool to show a different side of these actors to their fans."

The cast includes Ken (Dawn of the Dead) Foree, Tricia Helfer, Corin Nemec, Jason Brooks and Josh Hammond. "Tim Thomerson has agreed to be in it," Woelfel adds, "though he has a film shooting in Canada at almost the same time which may ultimately conflict."

The film was scripted by Jay and Scott Spears.

The official website can be found here.

The Cosmic Horror Fun-Pak
http://www.petting-zoo.org/OrderForm.html

Now is the time to reserve your copy! The Cosmic Horror Fun-Pak is our latest DVD release. The Fun-Pak includes a collection of short movies by Guerrilla Productions, including many never-before-released pieces. Forty minutes of shorts -- hilarious, frightening, and weird -- plus lots of extra stuff, such as slideshows, music-only tracks, commentary tracks, subtitles, and more. One particular gem on this is the complete musical soundtrack for Guerrilla Productions' award-winning short movie The Testament of Tom Jacoby. This haunting score is more than twenty minutes long, a far cry from the eight minutes used in the actual movie. The first 1000 copies sold of the Cosmic Horror Fun-Pak will be autographed, so now is the time to order 'em! (evidently, I've forgotten how much of a pain in the butt 1000 autographs can be). Alas, it doesn't look likely that we'll be shipping out in time for Christmas, but the happy grinning skull will be a GREAT way to welcome in the new year! The DVDs will be region 0.

December 9: Beyond the Wall of Sleep is coming!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAURER/KLAUSMAN FILMS is proud to announce the upcoming release of their newest film, “Beyond the Wall of Sleep.” This VFX soaked, Lovecraftian period piece showcases the acting talents of William Sanderson (Blade Runner, HBO's Deadwood), Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead), Rick Dial (Sling Blade), and is co-written/directed by Barrett J Klausman and Thom Maurer.

LOS ANGELES, CA. -- Visceral Pictures and Triple "B" Productions is announcing it’s upcoming release of a Maurer/Klausman film: “Beyond the Wall of Sleep.” Produced by Jhano Ajamian, Jim Bolden, and Koko Polosajian, this 35mm feature film opens the porthole once again into the twisted mind of H.P. Lovecraft, author of dozens of early 1900's horror/sci-fi short stories. The film combines the writing/directing talents of Thom Maurer and Barrett J Klausman, a team that has been working in the horror film genre for the past decade. Through sheer force of will, they have pulled together a cast of cult favorites: William Sanderson (Blade Runner, HBO's Deadwood), Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead, From Dusk till Dawn), Rick Dial (Sling Blade), Marco St. John (Thelma and Louise), and Bobby Jacoby (Tremors 1 & 3) amongst others to bring to the screen this tale of an unknown entity crossing over into our world and wreaking havoc on an asylum for the criminally insane.

Beyond the Wall of Sleep, while finishing its 3rd year of production, is long awaited by Lovecraft and horror fans alike.

For more information please visit www.beyondthewallofsleep.com and www.2filmguys.com.

This story was also covered by Dread Central and Creature-corner.com...

December 9: Late Bloomer to screen at Sundance!

Late Bloomer writer Clay McLeod Chapman has just informed me that Craig Macneill's short film will screen at the next Sundance Film Festival! According to Clay, only 1 out of thirty-eight films from the US, and 1 out of eighty-two films from around the world are picked...

Late Bloomer has already screened at the following festivals:

Lake Placid Film Festival (Audience Award Best Short Film)
CineVegas International Film Festival
Rhode Island International Film Festival
St. Louis International Film Festival
Los Angeles International Short Film Festival
One Reel International Film Festival
Sundance Film Festival
H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival (the trailer screened this year, and the film will screen next year)

Here is what the press is saying about Late Bloomer:

"...The filmmakers’ take on this fascinating subject is not only bold and honest, it is also utterly hilarious, thanks mostly to the deliciously creepy voice-over work of screenwriter Chapman. As the inner voice of the boy most affected by Miss Lovecraft’s wild revelations, Chapman sounds like a deranged poet who’s clearly spent too much time studying that other Lovecraft while in the asylum. His fevered hysteria during the boy’s ultimate breakdown rivals that of the great Gene Wilder for sheer simulated delirium, a true spectacle indeed..."
- Film Threat

H.P. Lovecraft goes to 7th grade Sex Ed class.” “Cute funny film is a treat to horror fans.”
– Ain’t it cool news

Macneill's defined sense of color and imagery lends real beauty to his work.”
- Erik Wennermark, RADAR Review

Late Bloomer steers Lovecraft in a frighteningly original direction. Craig Macneill's film succeeds on every level.”
- Unfilmable.com

There were many great short films, but “Late Bloomer” is the one I would recommend this year!
– Vegas Arts Corner

The audience didn't move, except to breathe, laugh and apply bug spray.”
- Richmond Times Dispatch

You can visit the following sites (North Lake Films, The Sundance Film Festival, The Pumpkin Pie Show and One Ring Zero) for more information about Late Bloomer, director Craig Macneill and writer Clay McLeod Chapman.

December 9: Looking for a Lovecraft script?

The official website of author Ran Cartwright recently went live, and it contains a listing of his television & screen writing projects. Among them are two of note to Lovecraft film fans & directors. The screenplays are "The Girl Who Walked in Circles" (written with Mike Minnis) and "Summoning Tsathoggua"...

The Girl Who Walked in Circles:

"In legend-haunted Dunwich, a teenage girl with strange powers has designs on the new headmaster."

Summoning Tsathoggua:

"Obsessed and dominated by the toad god, Tsathoggua, a young woman attempts to call the toad god forth. But it isn’t the first time it’s happened."

The site notes that, "None have been sold or optioned (people don’t know what they’re missing!). Should anyone be interested, Ran will gladly forward a copy to the interested party."

December 8: The Fog set revisited...

Ever wonder what it was like on the set of John Carpenter's classic, The Fog? Dread Central's new bi-weekly article gives you the opportunity to find out. Writer Sean Clark has visited some of the most memorable locations from the production, and is now writing about them in Horror's Hallowed Grounds. Other classic films will follow...

Here's a clip from the first article:

"In 1980 Avco Embassy Pictures released The Fog. This would be the sixth film and fourth feature by director John Carpenter. Expectations were high after the success of his prior film Halloween that had just become the highest grossing independent film of all time.

The idea of The Fog came to John while on vacation with co-writer & producer Debra Hill at Stonehenge. John saw a fog bank in the distance and imagined what if something was alive inside it. John and Debra decided to turn the idea into a screenplay that would be an old fashioned ghost story loosely based on true events that took place off the coast of Santa Barbara in the 1700's.

The Fog was shot entirely in California during the months of April & May 1979 for a modest budget of $1.1 million dollars. In this article we will be examining the locations used to create this horror classic and show how a film like this is put together in the editing room. Additionally, we'll also look at how some of these locations look today..."

December 8: The Hound is coming! ~ updated ~

A new adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound is in the works. The film is currently in pre-production with a mid/late January-early February start date. Director Woodruff Laputka (not Janie Gaiger as previously stated) hopes to have the film ready in time for the 2005 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival.

Watch this space for updates!

December 6: No House for Dr. West?

Dread Central recently looked into the rumor that the fourth Re-Animator film (House of Re-Animator) was in the works. The rumor started when actor Jeffrey Combs mentioned that his agent brought up the idea of slipping into West's shoes one more time (see November 29th). Here's what Stuart Gordon had to say about the project...

"There's nothing much to report on 'House.' Brian Yuzna doesn't seem to want to go so political," Gordon told Dread Central. "He's afraid it would seem dated in a few years. Maybe the fans could help change his mind."

Gordon is currently working on his adaptation of Jack Ketchum's Ladies' Night...

This story was also mentioned on joblo.com...

December 6: Evil Dead 4 still on...

According to an interview with Zap 2 it, Sam Raimi says that Evil Dead 4 is "still in the cards". Read on for the scoop...

"When he's all finished with the "Spider-Man" franchise, director Sam Raimi thinks he'd like to go back to his horror roots and add to his "Evil Dead" series."

"Raimi first got noticed with his low-budget indie "Evil Dead" in 1981, followed by "Evil Dead 2" in 1987 and "Army of Darkness" in 1993 which follows the story of the reluctant demon killer Ash., played by Bruce Campbell, who has had cameos in all the "Spider-Man" films."

"I definitely want to do it and I think after -- whenever the Spider-Man jobs end -- I would love to dig in on that," Raimi says. "That's something I'm really looking forward to."

Raimi is working on a remake of his 1981 "Evil Dead" (as producer), but doesn't plan to direct it...

December 3: Mountains of Madness in production?

According to a website sent to me by Lovecraft Film researcher Frank Hummel, director Ken Waller and producer Ken Verdon are working on a independent production based on Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". The tagline gives the impression that the film will be shot in a period setting, but no further information is available...

I hope to have more soon.

December 3: Fog wrangler announced...

Variety announced yesterday that Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) will direct Revolution Studios remake of John Carpenter's The Fog.

Dread Central reports that, "Wainwrights' idea for the film involves fleshing out the story that was only mentioned in the original, and I guess that's not really a bad thing though part of what made the first one work so well was the small amount of info both the characters and the viewers actually had about what was going on. Apparently, the special effects in the film will be utilized so titular fog is more of an actual character..."

The remake is set to role in March, for a release next October 21st.
