26: Herbert West faces the Old Ones!
Everyone's
favorite Re-Animator will face
Lovecraft's Old Ones in the fourth installment
of the cult classic series according to a
recent interview with Brian Yuzna! Budgetary
limitations (and Yuzna's story concerns) may
effect the final outcome of House of Re-Animator
before the other two sequels get off the ground
though...
Read
on for excerpts from the Eyes on the Cinema
interview or click here
for more!
"The
second would be Re-Animator Unbound! West
would have his own fiefdom amidst a war zone.
There his experiments take him directly in
conflict with religion and face to face with
the Old Ones of Lovecraftian lore. The final
episode would be Re-Animator Begins. After
having his mind pretty much erased by the
trauma of Unbound! West is brought back to
his senses (during which we get to see some
of Wests boyhood) by a mysterious doctor
who turns out to be his mentor Dr. Grubers
niece. Back at the medical school in Switzerland
(where it all began in the original Re-Animator)
West recreates his early experiments, but
makes the fatal mistake of breaking one of
his basic tenants when he finds himself having
feelings for... a woman."
"Well,
we are trying to get a bigger budget. Yes,
Macy is interested in the role of the President
and we would like to bring back Dan Cain to
confront West for ruining his life. However,
because the picture would be a bigger budget
it has presented difficulties in the financing.
I have doubts about the House of Re-Animator
being too specifically a satire on the Bush
administration. Basing an horror movie too
clearly on current events can have the effect
of making the movie out-of-date as soon as
it is finished. To my mind the idea of West
in the White House has a kind of timeless
quality that deals with governmental power,
hubris and corruption in any country at any
time - especially this one. I like the idea
of the government funding Wests experiments
for their own political and ideological goals.
Normally
I maintain that politics is a more natural
subject for Science Fiction than Horror. The
best Horror deals with psychology, religion,
death, flesh. But a horror film reflects the
times in which it is made, including the political
climate. I think that there is real horror
in the White House today, and that if we can
keep our sense of humor it can be the basis
of a successful horror film. It would be great
fun to see West running the government."

22: Lovecraft behind-the-scenes!
Check
out this behind-the-scenes image from David
Hohl's In Search of Lovecraft!
The
shot is from a rehearsal for the film's ritual
scene. David tells Unfilmable.com
that actress Rachael Robbins had to learn
the entire ritual (called the Star Ruby) in
Greek. He also noted that the production had
an occult expert from L.A. oversee all of
the films many occult elements...

22: The Thing, what might have been...

MoviesOnline.ca
spoke with makeup FX artist Vincent
Guastini recently, and he revealed a
bunch of designs he came up with for
the Sci Fi Channels failed Thing
sequel/remake (which was being written
by Frank Darabont)...
"I
was involved briefly with the first
remake for the Sci Fi Channel. I did
some designs and a model for [producer]
David Foster, who in turn recommended
I get them to Frank Darabont, who was
writing the new sequel for the Sci Fi
Channel version. I met with David and
he was really impressed by my ideas;
so was Frank, but I did not get the
prize because Frank has certain alliances
with effects people, so I knew going
in I would not be a first choice. But
his company did keep in touch with me
and give me reports as to what was happening
due to my design ideas and presentation."
"Now,
I've heard no news from Darkwoods, Frank
Darabont's company, in the last four
months. So now I just heard [about Universal's
THING update]; I'm real excited about
it and hope I can be involved with the
new project. [But] if Rob Bottin wanted
to do it, I would step aside!"

19: At the Mountains of Madness update!
Sci
Fi Wire spoke with Guillermo del Toro recently,
and he told them that he'd still like to make
a faithful adaptation of At the Mountains
of Madness, hopefully right after he finishes
Hellboy 2 (scheduled for next year).
According to Sci Fi Wire, del Toro has been
working on Madness since as early as
2003...
"The
whole idea of Lovecraft's position towards
the universe, he's very much like an Albert
Camus position. He's an existentialist. He
says the cosmos is indifferent to man. At
the very best is indifferent. And [it] just
[sees] us as fleas, or ... [is] hostile to
us."
"So
this sea of almost ... empty spaces is very
hard to portray in film. It's very hard to
portray the fact that you are ... an ant in
a picnic, and yet you have delusions of grandeur.
That's what Lovecraft was saying. Our race
as a whole are just arrogant little ants in
a picnic. That's what Mountains of Madness
are."

15: Sword & Cloak wraps House of Black
Wings!
For
Immediate Release:
Sword & Cloak Productions is proud to
announce the completion of Principle Photography
on their second Feature Film, House
of Black Wings,
on December 13, 2006.
House of Black Wings is a character-driven
Lovecraftian ghost story. Inspired by the
social drama of Polanski's "The Tenant"
and Larry Fessenden's "Habit",
the surreal images of Argento's "Suspiria"
and Fulci's "The Beyond",
and the pervasive menace of Asian ghost stories.
It is a nightmare of urban paranoia, loss
of identity, and the blurred line between
creativity and madness.
"After a tragic act of violence cuts
short her music career, Kate Stone is returning
to a city full of ex-fans and ex-friends.
Taking shelter with her last friend, a struggling
artist named Robyn Huck, the two women work
to restore the aging courtyard apartment building
Robyn has inherited. But a terrible secret
infests the venerable structure, and soon
Kate will be haunted by horrific dreams, sinister
apparitions, and the sounds of something moving
in the walls. She will be dragged into a confrontation
not only with her own dark past, but the unspeakable
nightmare that lurks beyond the walls!"
House
of Black Wings
was written & directed by David Schmidt
whose previous films include the well-received
horror shorts: Grave Invitations and
The Lovecraft Syndrome, and the swashbuckling
indie feature: Sword of Hearts. The
movie's talented cast includes Chicago actors:
Leah Myette, Katherine Herrera, Michael Klug,
James Polak, Tirf Alexius, and Amy Harmon.
We're especially proud of the work of our
D.P. & Art Director Clare Martin, and
FX make-up & performance artist Michelle
Maynard of Death By Design Co. (www.deathbydesignco.com/)

& Crew List, and an ongoing News-Blog

12: New Closet Space poster and update!
|
|
Closet
Space director Mel House revealed
the new poster on the official
MySpace page recently, and had this
to say about the film (which is currently
in post-production), "I'm currently
about halfway through the first pass
of the editing phase on Closet Space
and our effects shots are slowly starting
to trickle in from our digital supervisor
Stacy Davidson. The Closet Space post
process is on track for completion early
next year, possibly even before the
Chicago Weekend of Horrors, and Im
looking at doing a premiere in spring
2007."
"I'm
actually sitting in the edit suite right
now, taking a break from cutting together
one of the movie's most intense action/scare
scenes. Hopefully I don't sound like
a total idiot, but I'm actually surprised
by how well things are coming together
for Closet Space. It's almost like the
elements are falling into place on their
ownwhich is weird, because we
definitely had some crazy days on the
set where I felt like our coverage was
lacking. There are little things that
need to be plugged in here and there,
but overall we pretty much got everything
I wantedeven some of the more
complicated practical effects."

12: Frank Difficult Birthday Bash and Lovecraft
Party!
For
Immediate Release:
Friday,
December 22, 2006
9pm
Frank Difficult Birthday Bash and Lovecraft
Party
Lovecraft:
"There were nauseous musical instruments,
stringed, brass, and wood-wind, on which St.
John and I sometimes produced dissonances
of exquisite morbidity and cacodaemoniacal
ghastliness ..."
Hell
yeah. It's Friday night party time - and also
the last night for the taqueria until January
11th, 2007. Holy crap - better get yr burrito
fix now. On the stage, Frank Difficult is
hosting dissonances of exquisite morbidity,
live music and video shenanigans, emphasis
on shenanigans, from the bubbling froth of
the Providence underground. New crossover
collaborations, chaotic sensations and hybrid
blasphemies from unlikely improv pairs, trios,
quads, and the like. You may see faces old
and new, perhaps players from V. Majestic,
Septimania, Barnacled, Eyesores, Mahi Mahi,
Xerxes, Black Forest/Black Sea and who knows
how many other extended heavy branches of
the Difficult family tree. In addition to
the Frank Difficult birthday mayhem, Frank
is raising awareness for his new film project:
"The Color Out of Space",
a feature-length film adaptation of H.P. Lovecrafts
classic short story. The film will be directed
by Frank Difficult, and written and produced
by Frank Difficult and Jonathan Thomas for
House of Wrong Productions. "The Colour
Out of Space" (written in 1927) concerns
a rural Massachusetts family in 1882 upon
whose farm a mysterious meteorite crashes.
An alien life-form infesting the meteorite
soon has an alarming effect on the local plants,
insects, and mammals. Eventually the family
itself is subject to the entitys insidious
and then horrific influence. "The Colour
Out of Space" is a pioneering blend of
horror and science fiction. Many fans and
critics, and even Lovecraft himself, considered
this his best story. Tonight's mad cacophony
kicks off around 9 - cover is only $4.

December 2: Clive Barker does Poe!
Dread Central reports
that horror master Clive Barker has inked
a deal with Walden Media (The Chronicles
of Narnia) to bring the last two weeks
of Edgar Allan Poe's life to the big screen!
The project centers on several
kids who are trying to investigate just what
happened during the last two weeks of Poe's
life (a mystery that has been the topic of
debate for years). In the end, the kids end
up digging a bit too deep and unleash Poe's
nightmares on the world...
Barker
will develop and produce the project, and
he had this to say about it, "I think
we might have a chance with this project to
bring the character of Poe alive for a new
audience and weave his shadowy existence into
the dark enchantments of his stories so that
for our protagonist, and for our audience,
it will be difficult to be sure where one
finishes and the other takes flight."
No
writers or director has been announced...
