February 28: Flesh of my Flesh wraps principal photography! ~ updated ~

...Ron Richardson as Herbert West...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

February 24, 2005

Portland Oregon's Guerrilla Productions announces that Principal Photography is complete for their next feature film, an action/horror movie entitled "Flesh of my Flesh".

Filmmaker Edward Martin III ("Innsmouth Legacy", "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath") reports "What a ride! This has been just one amazing shoot. We had setbacks and miracles and all sorts of craziness. We shot through an ice storm, teenage invasions, police interventions, and bitterly cold weather. Our cast and crew stepped up to the plate and hit a freakin' home run. The footage we have looks like a million bucks!" The actual Production budget for "Flesh of my Flesh" was, in fact, $10,000.

...Heather Garcia...

The final scenes were filmed in Dammasch State Hospital, a disused mental institution south of Portland. "Our location was awesome. We had a completely constructed laboratory, with walls and ceiling and floor and we could shoot in any direction. Our locations, our props, our set dressing, and our hordes and hordes of rampaging flesh-eaters, everything has come together to make the perfect last scene for this movie," he added.

Some second-unit shooting is still scheduled and post-production has already started.

Guerrilla Productions, fueled almost entirely by caffeine, released their first feature, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" in October 2003 (and has already sold out of its first pressing) and has released a second DVD, called The Cosmic Horror Fun-Pak (http://www.petting-zoo.org/OrderForm.html), which includes a collection of short movies, as well as the first teaser-trailer for "Flesh of my Flesh".

...Susan Spencer...

"Flesh of my Flesh" chronicles the last eight hours of the War of the Undead, from the point of view of the people trapped in the middle, and stars Heather Rose Walters, Matthew Martin, Ron Richardson, Rex Irae, and many other local Portland actors.

February 27: Dead Birds rising!

While skimming through the latest issue of Fangoria (#238), I ran across an article about a film called Dead Birds. In it, the director mentions a direct Lovecraft influence to the storyline and general feel of the script (Unfortunately, I'm going from memory here...). He also mentions it being influenced by the 'supposedly real' necronomicon...

The film will be released on SE DVD by Sony Pictures March 15. The story is as follows:

When a group of criminals on the run after a bank robbery take refuge in an abandoned house, they have no idea what evil they have come upon. Isolated and presumed deserted, the house is anything but safe...As the night wears on and a thunderstorm grows outside, each member of the group begins to have visions of the atrocities that occurred within the house, haunting it forever. Voices in the well, visions of mangled bodies and clawing under the stairs plague their waking hours. As the fear in the group begins to grow and the supernatural forces in the house start to manifest themselves, the group turn on each other and exact the wrath of the soul trapped within the walls.

You can read an interview here, in which the director also mentions the films Lovecraft influence. You can also read a review of the film here, courtesy of Dread Central...

February 27: From Beyond DVD pushed back...

Bloody-disgusting.com reports that MGM may be pushing the release date for the From Beyond SE DVD back to 2006. This is so they can catch up "cast and crew as well as give a respectable presentation for fans eager to see the newly found footage".

MGM is apparently also working on a DVD release for Stuart's 1987 film Dolls.

February 27: The Mist update

According to Dread Central, Frank Darrabont recently gave the moderator of King's official message boards some news about the status of The Mist...

"Tell all enquiring minds that I'm mere weeks out from finishing. Tell them also that the death of Norm the bag boy is the most appalling and outrageous screen death ever...bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!"

February 27: Sandra Dee passes on...

Actress Sandra Dee who starred in The Dunwich Horror passed away at the age of 63 (though a number of movie Web sites put her birth date variously at April 23, 1942, and April 23, 1944, which would have made her 62 or 60). CNN reports that she died (February 20th) at the "Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, California, where she had been treated for 14 days for complications from kidney disease and pneumonia".

February 27: The Fog's first victims...

Columbia/Revolution Studios have signed on the first actors for their remake of The Fog. The film, to be directed by Rupert Wainwright from a Cooper Layne script and produced by the original's John Carpenter and Debra Hill along with David Foster, has cast Tom Welling (the young Superman of the WB's Smallville) as a local boat owner, and Maggie Grace (Shannon on ABC's LOST) as the heroine (a local girl just returned home from college). No word on the rumor about Chris Isaak playing a small part...

Dread Central also reports that CG effects company Hydraulx has been awarded the computer visual effects job on the film. Shooting begins soon for October 14 release.

February 6: Saint Seiya: Great Old Ones

Here's an interesting project from Weird Fantasy Productions. It's called Saint Seiya: Great Old Ones (chapter 1), and it's currently in early development. Thibaut Brix reports that a script has been written, and a director (not him) is attached. The story involves a continuation of the manga and animated series "Saint Seiya"...

An avatar of Hephaistos, god of fire and enemy of Athena, signs a pact with Nyarlathotep to use the armor of the Great Old Ones, the most powerful armor in the universe. Hephaistos doesn't know that Nyarlathotep is a liar and manipulator, and that his soul will be lost. The first episode will consist of the four hero saints, using old armor (Pegasus, Dragon, Andromeda and Cygnus), fighting against Hephaistos's troops and the Great Old One saints...

February 6: No Ash for Evil Dead remake...

Source: Coming Soon, LatinoReview

According to gorezone.net, Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert have confirmed that the Evil Dead remake is almost certainly not going to be a PG-13. There will also not be a character named Ash, at Bruce Campbell's request.

Sam went on to say (in a Coming Soon interview), "Rob and I would try to get a young director with brand new ideas with his own cast and his own take on the thing" says Raimi who confirms that as of right now they're "waiting to find the right director for the project, that thinks he can really bring something new... the goal of this director should be to terrify the audience in a very intense, and merciless way". If they don't find someone, they would "put it on hold. I don't think we'd abandon it, but we won't make it unless we have a really good script and a really great director, somebody we feel is just right for it".

As for Evil Dead 4, Raimi told LatinoReview, "I think the fans are really smart. I don't think they'd be confused (if the two films came out close to each other). I'd like to make a part four. There's this very small audience for EVIL DEAD 4, and if we ever make a movie called ED4, which I'd like to make with Rob at some point and starring Bruce Campbell, I'm not saying there's a million people, but there's 100,000 people that will know exactly what it is and that's about as big as the crowd is, honestly. It's not a giant crowd. They're a great crowd".

They gone on to mention that Rob Tapert realized that the sequel might have to be Army of Darkness II, since Universal produced the most recent sequel.

February 1: Cthulhu is coming!

Source: Arkham N.W. Productions

Here's an odd item: father of the Seattle Monorail Grant Cogswell has teamed up with Portland Director Daniel Gildark to make a feature adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft story 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth', to be filmed in Seattle and Astoria, OR this summer. Co-screenwriter Cogswell says 'Cthulhu' is a "Gothic, apocalyptic, anti-Bush, gay horror film unlike anything you've ever seen". The script, which has been well-received around the Seattle film community, is, says Gildark, "a cross between 'Rosemary's Baby', 'Dawn of the Dead', and 'My Own Private Idaho', with edgy local music and gloomy Northwest locations."

February 1: Dante Tomaselli wants to direct 'Evil Dead' remake ~ updated ~

According to bloody-disgusting.com, director Dante Tomaselli has expressed interest in directing the upcoming remake of the Evil Dead. Dante told Movieonline (in a recent interview); "Needless to say, I'd love to direct an Evil Dead project. I've been wanting to make an all-out zombie splatter film for a long time. Something hard-core and gory as hell. I like that Tapert wants to produce a film that is an "assault." I have a track record...3 features now -- and I can certainly work on low budgets.

Hell, I even have Ellen (Cheryl from the original) Sandweiss in my new film, Satan's Playground. She had so many interesting stories to tell about the making of the original. I'm planning on shooting The Ocean next, but I'd drop everything if this opportunity presented itself.

I'm a die-hard Evil Dead fan; I saw the cult classic in 1981 in theaters when I was 11."

February 1: Alone in the Dark review added...

Bob Brinkman passed along a review for a film (Alone in the Dark) that I had originally planned to cover in more detail. The more I read about it though, the less it seemed to have retained the video games Lovecraftian qualities. From the sound of Bob's review, I'd say I was right...
