He soon discovers that his estranged father leads a strange, mysterious cult whose apocalyptic followers become fish people and return to the sea to worship their ancient god, Cthulhu...

The Miskatonic Acid Test - Now a Major Motion Picture!

February 1: Beware of the Dark Tree

Bob Brinkman passed along news of a new Mythos inspired film that is currently in pre-production: The Dark Tree

Evil grows in the woods. It corrupts the innocent and feeds on death. When Nancy and David fell under it's spell, David had finally found a way to bring his dad back. All it would take was some blood for the ancient tree. Well, David has many enemies but his best friend Nancy didn't realize she was one of them.

Writer/director Keith Woodruff says that the film is not based on any specific Lovecraft story, but is an extension of the Mythos itself. He is aiming for a Halloween 2006 completion date, with filming set to begin in June. Casting is ongoing with two supporting roles currently being sought (an Asian female 25-35 and an elderly, grandmotherly-type woman).

This is not the first Mythos inspired project that Keith has undertaken, having already written two other screenplays related in some way to Lovecraft's work including a feature length script based on August Derleth's "The Return of Hastur" (although the necronomicon was replaced by L. Ron Hubbard's book, Dianetics). A three-minute short was filmed from that script…

The trailer for The Dark Tree has been completed (in and around a suburban forest preserve in Chicago, Illinois), and can be seen on the official website

February 1: The Sounds of Lovecraft

Cinescape.com ran a fairly comprehensive article on Lovecraft film soundtracks recently that include such films as The Call of Cthulhu (music by Ben Holbrook, Troy Sterling Nies and Nicholas Pavkovic), The Shuttered Room (Basil Kirchin) and Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (Cyoakha Grace O'Manion). The obvious films are included (Re-Animator, From Beyond), but several other lesser know films are covered as well (including Dark Heritage and The Shunned House). The article does contain several errors that could easily have been corrected with a little research, but it is well worth reading if your interest lies in the music side of cinema...

Check it out here.

February 1: Gordon talks Lovecraft and Poe!

Dread Central caught up with Stuart Gordon to talk upcoming projects, and among them were House of Re-Animator and The Black Cat! Next up for Gordon is a new film for Amicus Films called Stuck that will be scripted by The Music of Erich Zann writer/director John Strysik. Then it's on to the Masters of Horror (season 2) episode based on Edgar Allen Poe's The Black Cat. According to Gordon, "our hope is that Jeffrey Combs will play Poe, as he's expressed interest in playing Poe for a long time."

In regards to House of Re-Animator, Stuart says, "We're still working on House; hopefully we'll get that made this year."

February 1: Seepage is coming!

Actor Donald Foley sends news that one of the three Lovecraft inspired films he's appeared in could see a DVD release later this year from E.I. Independent Cinema. The film, Seepage, was directed by Richard Griffin and produced by Ted Marr for Scorpio Films. Richard also wrote the film along with Lee Smith and Andrew Vellenoweth. It was lensed for under $20,000...

Griffin tells fangoria.com that, "[Seepage is] a loving return to the drive-in fare of yesterday. It's got action, gore, humanoid fish monsters, chicks with guns and rednecks. Actually, I feel confident in saying that Seepage is the best redneck horror film ever made..."

"It's got what you want in a horror film: nudity, laughs, gore and one of the coolest man-in-a-rubber-suit creatures you'll ever see. And best of all, no damn CGI! We used visual tricks that are so old in this movie; they look completely fresh and cool. Ben Chester, one of our effects artists, is an incredibly talented sculptor and painter. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but when I first saw the
headpiece sculpture that eventually became the model for the suit, I was stunned speechless."

Donald Foley has also appeared in the Lovecraft inspired films The Miskatonic Acid Test and A Side Order of Chaos Pie...
