He also had this to say about it's current status: "OK, I've tracked this movie for years and so last year when the IMDB indicated that it would be out in 2002 I was pumped.I attended the Weekend of Horrors and asked the Full Moon rep when it would be out and he gave a pretty grim diagnosis. The film was originally shot around 87/88. It was composed of 3 segments 1. Dungeonmaster 2. A story involving the character Jack Deth from the "Trancers" films and H.P. Lovecraft's "The Evil Clergyman," which starred Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton (!!!) David Gale and David Warner. (this story is available online if you have not read it. It actually kind of reminds me of "From Beyond") Charles Band's company , Empire Pictures, was going under around this time so the film, which had been completed was shelved to prevent the rights to being lost . The Full Moon rep told me that most of the footage can not be found and so we will not be seeing it anytime soon. I have a jpg from the movie of BC being attacked by a Monster." You can view the IMDb page here. And read the story here. Full Moons new website is here. (Thanks to Ray Honeycutt) January

The story's based on the works of Lovecraft, and O'Bannon has said he'd love a chance to re-cut it to give the audience the chance to see it in it's full glory. Artisan owns the rights (?), so go here to find out how to get them to give this one some love... The other petitions are for "ROTLD 2" and "Memoirs of an Invisible Man". B. Thompson (Thanks to Edward Martin III) January 20: Christian Matzke's Fangoria report I went to the Fangoria convention in New York City last weekend and saw the trailer for Beyond Re-Animator and heard Jeffrey Combs speak about it. The trailer shown was one of the two available on the internet, but it was interesting to see it on a larger screen. For those who haven't seen it, it lays out the basic premise of Herbert West continuing his experiments in a prison setting. There are a number of gross-out shots (eyeballs flying out of sockets, jawless zombies drinking milk out of the carton, etc.) and a weird "prison film" vibe. If you are a fan of Santiago Segura (Day of the Beast, Blade II) his role as "Speed Ball" promises to be substantial and amusing. Jeffrey Combs was pretty excited about the film when he spoke, although he said it was the hardest shoot he had ever done, and the fastest turn around he had ever seen. When I talked with him last spring at the Chiller Theater Convention he hadn't even been approached for the project, then in October he was shooting it and now they're editing! He was diplomatic about some of the touchier subjects, dismissing the claim that this is just a remake of Hammer's "Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell", and saying the only reason Bruce Abbott isn't in this sequel is the money issue. The Production couldn't afford to pay both Combs and Abbott on their meager budget. However, the plot was specifically written to not feature Bruce's character, and Jeffrey said that to have him in the film the plot would really need to be about the revenge of Dan Cain on Herbert. He hinted that perhaps this could be a fourth film in the series... I also met Adrien Morot, the guy who did the makeup for Bleeders (aka The "other" Lurking Fear) and got a firsthand look at one of the nasty critters. It's really too bad the film is so awful, Adrien's makeup is outstanding and the creatures are very well designed. The fact that they were portrayed by a half dozen midgets was in no way his fault. He wasn't aware of the Lovecraft connection with the film but said he was a big fan of Lovecraft's work. Perhaps he will have the opportunity to put his considerable skills to work on a better Lovecraft adaptation in the future. (Thanks to Christian Matzke) January

© 2002 Jason B. Thompson Bryan Moore to film Lovecraft's "Pickman's Model" Unfilmable.com has the first photo from Bryan Moore's adaptation of Lovecraft's "Pickman's Model"! Bryan Moore appears as the down-on-his-luck investigator Elliott Thurber, who is hired to track the whereabouts of missing artist Richard Upton Pickman. Pickman holds the last known copy of the Necronomicon, the legendary book of the dead. Will Thurber find Pickman before the terrible power the book holds claims them both? To begin filming this summer in Los Angeles, the film will be shot in black and white and set in the 1940's. Moore promises to give Lovecraft fans what they want. "I'm a huge Lovecraft fan myself and I wish there were more genuine adaptations of the old gent's work. Films like the great "Out of Mind" continue to be such an inspiration, so if I can get close to that, I'll be happy. Independent filmmakers like Aaron Vanek, Christian Matzke and a lot of others are doing fantastic films using Lovecraft stories as a basis. My hope is that the current work being done will raise "horror" to a legitimate art-form." (Thanks to Bryan Moore) January 17: Bruce Campbell, Wes Craven & others join LA Fango con Several additional headliners have been announced for the next FANGORIA Weekend of Horrors convention, which will be held in California May 24-25 at the Burbank Airport Hilton. Directors Sean Cunningham, Don Coscarelli and Brian Yuzna are also slated to appear. See www.creationent.com for more details. (Thanks to http://www.fangoria.com/) January

"Pickman's Model" From the filmmaker who brought you Lovecraft's "Cool Air" now comes a dark film noir tale of smoky bars and dark alleys, mayhem and the supernatural. Bryan Moore will start filming his feature version of "Pickman's Model" this year in Los Angeles. Returning to work with Moore is cinematographer Michael Bratkowski and the inimitable Jack Donner, who played Dr. Munoz from "Cool Air". Moore is currently in pre-production and promises a gritty, black and white film that is faithful to the original theme of the story, but set in the backdrop of a 1940's crime thriller. Fans of Moore won't be disappointed in this hard-hitting follow-up to "Cool Air". has added a new movie poster and lots of new
film pics from the upcoming "Beyond Re-Animator".
Click here to see more pictures. (Thanks to http://www.filmax.com/) While looking over Variety.com I came across these two interesting news items. Wed., Oct. 27, 1999 Miramax Films has optioned the feature film and publishing rights to Thomas Wheeler's fantasy-adventure manuscript "The Arcanum." Miramax made a preemptive mid-six-figure strike to wrap up rights to the approximately 145-page manuscript and synopsis for the remaining story. Bobby Cohen, who recently inked a production deal with Miramax, will produce the film under his Cohen Pictures banner. The novel will be published under the Talk/Miramax Books imprint, which took out an option for Wheeler's novel. "The Arcanum," Wheeler's debut novel, tells the story of a 1920s group of occult investigators comprised of some of the most famous personalities of that time: Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, H.P. Lovecraft and Marie Laveau. Together, they battle mysterious evils that descend on New York City, including a serial killer of angels. It's understood that Wheeler will pen the screenplay first before returning to complete the novel. "Tom has written a completely original story that I could not put down once I started reading it," said Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. "I can't wait to bring the Miramax sensibility to this project." Wheeler said, 'Talk/Miramax Books is the newest and coolest publisher on the block." Warren Zide, who manages
Wheeler, and Craig Perry of
Zide/Perry Entertainment will exec produce the film. Michelle
Raimo is overseeing the project for Miramax, reporting to
Meryl Poster.....
You can read more about this film here: Mar. 26, 2002 .....Miramax is already developing a film from Chabon's upcoming children's novel "Summerland," which will be published this fall by Talk Miramax Books, and the studio gets first shot at the eight stories whose spirit and subject matter Chabon discussed in his brief missive. In that document, Chabon declared that his objective is to revitalize his own writing by channeling the spirit of his formative literary influences, short story writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He promised thoroughly modern works of literature that are not homages, and there seems to be movie potential given that he will cover so many genres. Chabon will write a horror story, a Sherlock Holmes adventure, a ghost story, an adventure story, a science fiction story, a story of suspense, a costume or period or historical story and a sea story. If Miramax likes the movie potential for any of them, there is a template for a separate purchase deal for each. If the studio passes on one, Chabon can set it up elsewhere. There is also mention of an HBO western called "The Last Outlaw" in which Keith David plays a voodoo-doing cowboy Lovecraft. (Thanks to http://www.variety.com/index.asp?) January 9: H.P. The Investigators was created by Chris Lackey and can be seen on the atom films site. It was also shown at the 2001 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. You can see all five parts here: The Investigators All contents copyright thier respective owners. (Thanks to http://atomfilms.shockwave.com/af/home/) Years ago a friend of mine ran across an advertisement in a film magazine for a Lovecraft documentary. The ad said that it had been filmed in many of the real locations that Lovecraft lived and traveled. I can't remember the name of the documentary or the year (late 80's?), but I do remember that the ad said this; "This is the real story of H.P. Lovecraft, at least until Oliver Stone decides to tell it." Does anyone know more about this? Update: The year the ad ran was probably between 91-93. January
6: Upcoming releases?
Hey folks, Harry here... Just recently I turned in my linear notes for the upcoming soundtrack release of Richard Band's classic fun score to the original Stuart Gordon masterpiece... RE-ANIMATOR!!! This'll be coming out via LaLaLandRecords.Com and I already have an advance disc of it... which has a good deal of excellent music - plus an interview track, plus notes by Stuart Gordon, Richard Band and for some crazed reason... Me... MEANWHILE - Across and ocean in the land of Spain, being produced by Brian Yuzna and the Fantastic Factory is the latest chapter in the RE-ANIMATOR saga... BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR. They currently have two trailers up, I prefer the second one, but the problem with both is that the lighting just looks so bad... Completely has that video texture to it, but beyond that... it looks like a lot of cheesy fun. Check it out!
