House by Gant Haverstick (Thanks to all who participated) According to Diana Hughes, Tales of Orpheus has released a new spoken word CD entitled 'Three Horrifying Tales: From The Pen of H.P. Lovecraft 1890-19327, Legendary Master of the Macabre'. The three stories included on the CD ("The Music of Erich Zann", "The Cats of Ulthar", and "The Unnameable") are read by professional actor, artist, and university lecturer David Cale. Tracks are interspersed with orchestral excerpts from the music of Alfred Schnittke, 1934 - 1998. Full details and purchasing information can be found here. "I have very
much enjoyed David Cade's "Three Horrifying Tales". He has
a superb reading voice and the quality of this recording is impeccable."
"I have thoroughly
enjoyed listening to this fine collection of Lovecraft's tales. David
Cade captures excellently the atmosphere and dread that permeates these
tales." "What a great
find. It ['Three Horrifying Tales'] certainly comes off as a labor of
love. Mr. Cade does a wonderful job, adding just the right amount of
liveliness and emotion, with a true sense of dramatic silence. He also
has a true ear for the rhythm in Lovecraft's writing style. This is
a CD you'll really enjoy." "Being a passionate
collector of all things Lovecraft, I consider the creative input and
high production qualities of "Three Horrifying Tales"; featuring
David Cade, to be impressive. The three readings have been excellently
chosen - particularly, for me, the final reading, "The Unnameable."
This audio-CD offers distinct and concise readings, without any excessive
emphasis, and read with a classical English accent which blends well
with a superb choice of background music by Alfred Schnittke. This is
a CD to enjoy more than once." (Thanks to Diana Hughes) Bruce G. Hallenbeck's "London After Midnight" project gets some press on fangoria.com! ~Very Scary Productions Jeff Kirkendall reports that LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, a new feature hes co-producing and editing, is closing in on the end of postproduction. Written and directed by Bruce G. (VAMPYRE) Hallenbeck, this MIDNIGHT appears to take its title only from the legendary silent vampire feature, and is about paranormal investigators taking on satanic forces. Kevin Lindenmuths Brimstone Productions will release the movie. Kirkendall also recently wrote and directed his own bloodsucker opus, THE TEMPTRESS, and in addition, Very Scary is involved with THE EDGE OF REALITY, a horror anthology feature by Joe (SHADOW TRACKER) Bagnardi. You can check out photos and trailers for all three features at the Very Scary site linked above.~ (Thanks to http://fangoria.com/) January 21: Fear is just the beginning... John Carpenter, a director whose films have veered into Lovecraft territory more than once, has a career retrospective DVD coming out soon. The 60 min. DVD will be released by Image on March 23. Specs include 16x9 - 1.78:1 - Color - English - 5.0 Dolby Digital, Stereo - Region 1. More as it becomes available. (Thanks to http://www.gorezone.net/) From the official website: ~On a small island off the California coast it's the Fourth of July and tourists are washing up dead in Babylon Bay, once again! In 1987, rumor has it that mysterious sea creatures called AQUANOIDS were responsible for 17 vicious deaths. The Mayor (Edwin Craig) dispelled the sightings as urban legend to protect the local tourist trade. Join environmental activist Vanessa DuMont (Laura Nativo) as her fight to save the endangered abalone on Santa Clara Island turns into a fight of her life. Will she save the island from the latest Aquanoid attacks? Or will the greedy locals let more innocent people be slaughtered?~ From the review by Phantasmagoria: ~But before we dismiss this film as "B" fare or based solely on its implied heritage (Creature From The Black Lagoon, Jaws), there is as much influence from the works of H. P. Lovecraft as there is from these other genre films. A seaside town with a dark secret, an underlying corruption, and a lone hero battling sea creatures? "Shadows Over Innsmouth" comes to mind, as does Stuart Gordon's blend of Lovecraft tales, Dagon. Without the budget of any of its predecessors, Aquanoids reaches well beyond its humble beginnings and strives for something more...as does Cinemacabre, its production company.~ Read the entire review here. You can view the trailer and several scenes here. (Thanks to Eric Spudic) THE HALFWAY HOUSE has been accepted to the 6th annual San Francisco Independent Film Festival! Hi--- I'm looking for mythos-oriented poets (especially in the Northwest) who would be interested in participating in a reading/seminar to be held this coming October at the HPL Film Festival in Portland, Or. This is a new endeavor, (the reading/seminar, not the festival) & if there's enough interest out there I think it'd be a fun thing to do. The last few festivals have been great & I'm hoping to expand the concept a bit beyond simply HPL oriented independent films. If you'd be interested in helping out on the project, please drop me a line. Thanks--- Jody Forest/Author:"Bring me the Head of Bozo the Clown" & "Homage's to Xena!" Send all correspondences here. (Thanks to Jody Forest) According to Jeff Kirkendall,

Matzke's Fangoria WoH write-up Here's a photo of me (Christian Matzke) with Jessie Edmund and Tom Gleason of Enter the Dagon fame. I bumped into them at the Fangoria/Chiller Theatre convention this past weekend in New Jersey. I had gone there hoping to meet the stars and director of the Hellboy feature, but due to lousy planning by the convention organizers I had to content myself with buying lots of goodies in the dealers room instead. The creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, made a surprise appearance filling in for director Del Toro who had just had surgery. In a Q&A session he acknowledged the debt Hellboy owes to Lovecraft, but pointed out that "Lovecraft" is often just shorthand for a number of pulp authors writing weird fiction in the 30's. Since the influence of Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard and Frank Belknap Long (among others) is clear in his work, I was pleased to hear him say this. Three pieces of original artwork were given out in a trivia contest, and Enter the Dagon's own Jessie Edmund ("Stuart Corman") won the second piece. I never did get a good look at it.... Besides meeting Tom and Jessie and trading copies of my films for an Enter the Dagon t-shirt, I also met up with Jane Rose, whose "Statement of Randolph Carter" short film rocked out at the HPLFF in 2003. We watched the awesome Bubba Ho-tep at a midnight screening in NYC and then froze our butts off in the damn cold snap. The only other worthwhile note from the convention was a statue of Lovecraft I saw. At first glance I thought someone was ripping off Bryan Moore's awesome statue "The Howie" that is given out at the HPLFF each year, but on closer inspection I realized the sculpt was clearly the work of a different artist. Although I like Bryan's better, it was neat to see someone else tackle Lovecraft's "Easter Island" features. (Thanks to Christian Matzke) January 18: Studio Interzona update! A title has been chosen for Enrico Saletti's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" script. The film will now be called "Reunion", and Enrico is currently working on a treatment. Ivan has also informed me that the final shooting script for the newly re-titled "Colour from the Dark" is now finished. (Thanks to Ivan Zuccon) January 18: Strange Aeons CD The CD entitled "Strange Aeons" is a compilation of music and poetry inspired and influenced by H. P. Lovecraft and the ever expanding Cthulhu Mythos. It was released on CD format only and is a 2 CD set with CD #2 being a bonus collection of outtakes, demos, alternate versions and extra tracks. Click here for a track listing and availability information. (Thanks to James Ambuehl) **The following Cave

trapped in the underwater caves they "find

I think it would be good if we can add another one, like another icon, like maybe Michael Myers or somebody.~ Click here for the full interview. (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) This one is sounding a little less Lovecraftian... ~Cinescape indicates that the cave diving horror project (The Cave) will be set in Eastern Europe's waterways and not an open ocean as initially speculated.~ More as it becomes available. Creature-corner.com writes, For the past two years The Bravo Channel has been hosting "Project Greenlight", a show detailing the making of an independent film financed by the channel chosen from a competition. The first two seasons/films focused on "coming of age" films, but this year they're trying something a bit different. Miramax has joined forces with Bravo to present a new season of "Project Greenlight", but this year they will focus on the making of a "horror or thriller". Miramax says they are "hopeful" they will be able find an idea that will translate well to the little and big screen... The following is how the 'Regnum Congo' was created for Gant Haverstick's "The Picture in the House": ~A book that is the center of the short story is the Regnum Congo. It drives the old man in the house crazy if you recall. I created a duplicate of the book after actually tracking down an original. We went down to a archival collection at Indiana University; studied, measured, and photographed the book. We even talked the University into digitally scanning many of the pages. Our book actually features digital copies of the original text. I added it to a large book, custom made a cover, added a little metal hardware and aged it.~ (Thanks to Jamie Follis) The Official website for Rick Tillman's "The Summoning" is now online! 'The Summoning' will be a short (5-7 min.) silent film, which tells the tale of the last few hours of Dr. Reid's life. Some of you might remember Dr. Reid as one of Richard Pickman's adversarial colleagues from Pickman's Model. Well, he's returned...just in time to say good bye forever. It's an homage to the great silent classics like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Faust, The Golem, and Haxan. (Thanks to Dean Bertram) 2003 was a busy year for Lovecraft and Mythos cinema, and with everyone else doing best of lists, I thought why not... There were some stand out entries in 2003, including "The Shunned House", "An Imperfect Solution" and Rick Tillman's "Pickman's Model". There were also some valiant efforts, such as Edward Martin's animated "Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" and Derek M. Koch's "Casonetto's Last Song" (based on a story written by Robert E. Howard of Conan fame). 2003 also saw a Lovecraftian hero of sorts make an unimpressive showing with "Beyond Re-Animator". Could one of these films
be the years best? This list is not meant to slight the effort made by any of 2003's other efforts, but it is meant to steer people toward the most well made and thought provoking films. It may just spark them to make a Lovecraft film of their own, and bring new blood into the ranks of Lovecraft filmmakers. What does 2004 hold? I for one, am eager to find out... A partial list of eligible films: Beyond
Re-Animator by Brian Yuzna Know of a film not listed (and there are many)? Send it here! January 3: Animated Jeffrey Combs? According to creature-corner.com, Jeffrey Combs will be lending his voice to the Justice League animated series on Cartoon Network. His past forays in animation include MTV's CG animated Spider-Man series and as the Scarecrow in Batman: The Animated Series. Could more Lovecraftian adventures await the Justice League (see The Terror Beyond posts in December)? (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) According to creature-corner.com, Vertigo is releasing a comic book simply called Lovecraft, and it asks the question...what if it wasn't all fiction? It tells the story of Lovecrafts life (but with real monsters and demons). Hans Rodionoff (writer of the Clive Barker's Tortured Souls, Man Thing and Werewolf By Night screenplays) came up with the story of the book, which was adapted by comics legend Keith Griffen. The artwork is being done by Enrique Breccia, and John Carpenter is writing an intro for the book. If you head on over to Vertigo's Lovecraft page, you can check out some of the interior artwork from the book. Lovecraft is due out in February, 2004. (Thanks to http://www.creature-corner.com/) Ivan Zuccon sent along the following update regarding "The 7th War", "Colour of the Dark", the "Unknown Beyond" DVD and a newly announced film! Ivan confirmed that the Unknown Beyond DVD has indeed been pushed back to March 4th. The Leo Films release has now been pushed back several times, and the March 4th release seems unlikely... He also mentioned that due to budgetary reasons, "The 7th War" (third film in the Beyond series) has been suspended. Work on the film will commence when proper funding can be acquired. I've read the treatment for The 7th War, and it could really be an epic work of horror filmmaking if the proper amount of money is invested. Ivo Gazzarrini and Ivan are currently working on the 2nd draft of the Colour of the Dark (based on The Colour Out of Space) script and expect it to be finished by the end of January. They will meet with the actors in mid February, and filming will commence on May 15 (and run through June 30). After "Colour of the Dark" has finished filming, Ivan will launch right into his next project... ...The untitled project will be written by "The Shunned House/Unknown Beyond" writer Enrico Saletti (who had been working on "The 7th War"). The film will be an adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and semi-remake of the Vincent Price vehicle, "The Haunted Palace". It will be set in the present day, and shot in 35mm or a HDCAM transferred to 35mm. More as it becomes available. (Thanks to Ivan Zuccon) January 2: Pickman's Muse I've made several updates to the forthcoming terrors page including Robert (To Oblivion) Cappelletto's upcoming project, "Pickman's Muse". The film will be a cross between "Haunter of the Dark" and "Pickman's Model". The first draft of the script should be ready soon. More as it becomes available. (Thanks to Rick Tillman) January 2: The Shadow Over Innmouth props on eBay Two of the one of a kind props from the upcoming "Shadow Over Innsmouth" project are now available on eBay. Created in silicone with hand punched hair, these items were originally created to help sell "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" as a film. They were sculpted, and painted by artist Joel Harlow. You can view the auctions here and here. (Thanks to Rick Tillman) January 2: Interesting
Lovecraft reference Kelly Young sent along this image of an interesting toy he ran across this holiday season. The 'Tech Deck Dude' line includes this obvious Lovecraft reference called 'Thooloo'!
