July 28: Submit to the HPLFF!

More goodness from the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival:

Late Bloomer, March the 13th, 1941 and The Yellow Sign (Italian) have been added to the short films roster. More features and shorts to be announced!

And for those of you familiar with Late Bloomer (and even for those of you who are not!), there will be a live performance by writer Clay McLeod Chapman after the screening!

Late Bloomer—After you watch the short film, come witness the live performance...

The Old Ones have been hidden within a dimension unbeknownst to most of the boys and girls in Miss Lovecraft's seventh grade sexual education class. But with puberty only a few breaths away, it won't be long before the gates from their world open up into ours... right in the middle of class. Darker than your normal curriculum, Late Bloomer is a theatrical performance of the short story written

by Clay McLeod Chapman. Come see the original piece that went on to inspire Craig Macneill's award winning cinematic adaptation that was an official selection at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

«Chapman sounds like a deranged poet who's clearly spent too much time studying that other Lovecraft while in the asylum. His fevered hysteria during the boy's ultimate breakdown rivals that of the great Gene Wilder for sheer simulated delirium, a true spectacle indeed.»
—Film Threat, 2004

This witch has a familiar that is a rat which has a human face, and she comes back and wants this kid to sacrifice the baby of this lady that lives next door. It's a very, very intense story."

July 24: Jeffrey Combs latest?

Creature-corner.com recently ran an article covering Jeffrey Combs latest projects. According to the article, he is considering parts in two upcoming Masters of Horror episodes. The episodes are listed as, "Witch" and "Dagon". Here is the information in question:

~Showtime is in the process of creating a new series called "Masters of Horror". Jeffrey is already being considered for two of the upcoming episodes; "Witch" and "Dagon". Keep an eye right here for more information on this new series.~

I'm pretty sure that the information in this article is misquoted. It is true that Jeffrey Combs in working on Stuart Gordon's "Dreams in the Witch House" episode, but there is no episode (to my knowledge) based on Dagon. The confusion probably came from the fact that Jeffrey is starring opposite Dagon lead Ezra Godden in the Witch House episode (see: June 2)...

July 18: Guerrilla Productions to re-release The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath on DVD

For Immediate Release:

July 14, 2005

Guerrilla Productions to re-release The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath on DVD

Portland's Guerrilla Productions announces the reprint of its first feature film, the animated adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, on DVD, for August 2005.

The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, one of H. P. Lovecraft's few novels, follows the adventures of Randolph Carter, a brave Dreamer in the Land of Dream, as he navigates a terrifying landscape of ghouls, zoogs, Shantak birds, nightgaunts, dholes,

evil priests, and moonbeasts, all in search of his beloved Sunset City.

"We've really punched it up," says Director Edward Martin III. "We've remastered the soundtrack in Dolby Digital, added more bonus features, pulled out many scenes that were very loosely animated and re-animated them completely from scratch, included some very neat DVD-ROM content, and just overall have made this an even more attractive product than the first release."

The first limited release of 1000 copies sold out in six months.

"That's not going to happen again," adds Martin. "We're committed to keeping this product alive and well for as long as the fans want it."

Guerrilla Productions, fueled almost entirely by caffeine, has completed half a dozen short movies since the initial release of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath and is currently in post-production on Flesh of my Flesh (www.FleshOfMyFlesh.com), a live action horror/thriller with Lovecraftian undertones, and pre-production on a live-action adaptation of The Statement of Randolph Carter.

July 18: Guerrilla Productions to adapt The Statement of Randolph Carter!

For Immediate Release:

July 12, 2005

Guerrilla Productions to adapt The Statement of Randolph Carter

Portland's Guerrilla Productions announces it is in pre-production on a live action adaptation of The Statement of Randolph Carter, based on the short story by H. P. Lovecraft.

The Statement of Randolph Carter is one of Lovecraft's most terrifying tales, a blind descent into terror in an ancient graveyard.

"I've always thought it was peculiar that Randolph Carter, who is

normally a very strong character in Lovecraft's work had been portrayed as so weak in this story," said Director Edward Martin III. "But as I became more familiar with the story and started digging into the possibilities, I realized that this one story is a pivotal moment for Carter, a place where he graduates, essentially, from student of Harley Warren's to the path of a master. This is the moment, in this movie, that changes him into the strong and powerful character he becomes."

The Statement of Randolph Carter stars newcomer Sean Strauss as Harley Warren and "Mad Martian" as Randolph Carter. "The crew is amazing," adds Martin. "This crew is fresh from our recent feature and they can make gold out of straw. It's like a Flesh of my Flesh family reunion."

Guerrilla Productions, fueled almost entirely by caffeine, has completed half a dozen short movies since the initial release of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath and is currently in post-production on Flesh of my Flesh (www.FleshOfMyFlesh.com), a live action horror/thriller with Lovecraftian undertones.

July 16: Gordon's Witch-House!

Variety ran a insert recently that was devoted entirely to the Masters of Horror series. It contained details about each of the 13 episodes in the first season, including the following info on Stuart Gordon's "Dreams in the Witch-House"!

There is no mention of Jeffrey Combs involvement, as had been reported earlier...

"Dreams In The Witch-House," dir. Stuart Gordon

Screenplay by Stuart Gordon & Dennis Paoli

Stuart Gordon presents his fifth adaptation of a tale of terror from horror master H.P. Lovecraft. Walter Gilman (Ezra Godden), a college student studying interdimensional string theory, rents a garret in a run-down building in the old New England town of Arkham. He is haunted by terrifying nightmares in which he is visited by a 17th-century witch and her familiar, a rat with a human face. He begins to realize that these are not dreams at all and that diabolical forces are gathering to sacrifice his neighbor's infant. As Walter struggles to prevent this, it becomes less clear if he will save the child or become its unwitting murderer himself.

July 12: Hell is closing in

Fangoria.com has a lengthy write-up of filmmaker Ted (The Deadly Spawn) Bohus's new film, Hell on Earth. Filming is currently underway on the supernatural horror/comedy...

I'm still not sure how much inspiration Lovecraft's writings played in the creation of the script, but some obvious mythos elements are evident.

The story involves a sixteen-year-old named Bobby who walks with the help of metal leg braces and lives with his parents Ernie and Lucy and sister Peggy. He plays with 'imaginary friends' provided by the mysterious and ancient 'Apocryphal Book of Tarkuhm' provided by his Aunt Sadie. What he doesn't know is that the monsters and demons are only biding their time until the planets are aligned, and they can get him to read the passage freeing their master from the "hell" of another universe...

...As this process begins, more and more bizarre creatures breach the portal of this world and magically seal everyone in the house, including Bobby, his parents, Peggy, her friends and the mysterious Aunt Sadie. Things get nasty as one by one, the inhabitants of the house fall prey to the ever-increasing horde of pustular monstrosities. Who will survive? Who will discover the way to destroy these strange creatures and save the Earth?

July 6: The Necronomicon of the Templars

Source: CineTerror (translation by BabelFish)

Here's an update (from Christopher K. Philippo) outlining what the storyline might have been for the fifth film in Amando de Ossorio's Blind Dead series (See also: July 10th and June 27th)...

~ Lamentably this was the last appearance of the templarios horsemen in the great screen although in way a villa is had left delivery that would take by name "the Necronomicon of the Templarios" and that would suppose a crossing between the horsemen and count Waldemar Daninsky (Paul Naschy), that would try to free of its curse of man wolf through the magical

secrets written in the Necronomicon that the templarios horsemen kept in their abbey. What he never could be carried out so that the producers found a history between these two unnecessary so appeared personages who had several sequels already, in addition Paul Naschy did not see itself very interested in the project. ~

July 4: Argento's myth of Ctuhlu

Here's another film that never made it past the writing stage...

Director Dario Argento (Suspiria) and producer Dino de Laurentiis attempted to adapt Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos without success...

The following is an excerpt from an interview conducted by darkdreams.org:

Dark Dreams: If you could make a Lovecraft tale into a film, which would it be and why? Would you do this if the opportunity presented itself? Do you feel that the feat of translating Lovecraft to film can be done properly?

Dario Argento: Many years ago producer Dino de Laurentiis asked me to work on a movie taken from Lovecraft. I worked with an American writer. I wanted to inspire to the myth of Ctuhlu and I studied it for almost a year. Then I realized it was too difficult, and de Laurentiis didn't like the work, it looked too abstract to him. Indeed, Lovecraft is not so realistic, especially the myth of Cthulu.

July 1: Experiment 17 footage exposed

For Immediate Release:

Footage of Experiment 17 has finally been made available to Crawling Chaos Pictures. With the help of Anthony Penta (The Hound) and PentaWorks, the footage has been repaired and cleaned, and is nearly ready to be released (in documentary form). CCP are traveling to Los Angeles this weekend to record the narration with Andrew Leman of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. All that remains is scoring, and then it will be submitted to the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival for possible inclusion in this fall's festival. Other venues and festivals are also being looked at, including the MiskatoniCON.

July 1: Richard Stanley's Nemesis, the film that never was...

I ran across the following information on Between Death and the Devil, a website dedicated to the films of Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil). During an interview (conducted by the webmaster) he expresses his interest in Lovecraft, whether there's ever been a true Lovecraft film and his own unfilmed attempt Nemesis.

An adaptation of Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" and a treatment for Arthur Machen's "The Great God Pan" are among Richard's other unfinished projects...

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

BDD: Do you like Lovecraft?

RS: Big fan.

BDD: Which of his stories would you like to adapt?

RS: I can't really imagine adapting any of his stories 'cause none of them quite lend themselves to film. I wouldn't mind doing a homage. One of his stories that I might think of doing is making The Call of Cthulhu as a fake documentary. It's possible having a documentary, piecing together different pieces from around the world. I'd like that - people around the world having the same dreams, seeing the same nightmare. But otherwise it's more likely that I might make a homage to him.

BDD: You don't see films doing justice to Lovecraft?

RS: No, I don't think there's ever been an actual Lovecraft movie. Sometimes, funnily enough, I think that Bergman comes quite close, like Through a Glass Darkly, where a girl has a vision of god as a huge spider about to eat her, that's a pure Lovecraftian moment. Hour of the Wolf, and even the ending of Shame have their moments of cosmic horror.

BDD: What about that Reservoir Dogs/Evil Dead movie?

RS: That was actually closest to a Lovecraft adaptation. It was written ages ago, for Jean-Claude Van Damme, when Sam Raimi was looking to do it. But it was called Nemesis, now there's another film called Nemesis. The idea was - there is a poem by H.P. Lovecraft with that title - the story is about a bank robbery in Netherlands, they break into the vault of a very old European bank to get the diamonds, and they do it on Queen's day, there is a party to cover up the noise of jack-hammers. Together with the diamonds they get a box left there since the World War II. It's got some triangular black stones in it, and one of the guys cuts his hand on a stone or something, and then they're trapped in the vault because the police surround them, and then a demon possesses one of the hoods. Particularly good was, when a demon takes over the gangster, he immediately reaches for his cell phone and calls HELP. And some Call of Cthulhu kind of 'cleaners' arrive, fast-moving Indian-like types with funny tattoos on their faces and rain capes who try to rescue their God and stuff...
