I came across the following mention of "At the Mountains of Madness" on the Hellboy Message Board. It seems that the film is a long way from production.... Fan Question: Regarding 'At The Mountains of Madness' - any word on where you stand with the project? Have you scouted locations or anything like that? How much preparation do you do on a project before taking it to the money guys? Guillermo Del Toro: No
scout yet. But that lil' adventure -IF it happens- will probably take
me about 2-3 years of prep. model kit unleashed Fangoria.com post this cool picture of Glass Eye Pix new Wendigo model. The model is based the "Wendigo" film directed by Larry Fessenden. ~No account of the Wendigo is the same, and this model represents a figment of imagination visited upon a young schoolboy in the 1970s, says director Fessenden. Hallenbeck (London After Midnight), he asked about "the vague state of copyrights when it comes to his [Lovecrafts] work". Bruce would like to make further Lovecraft adaptations (he has already adapted "In the Vault"), but is concerned about what is and isn't safe to film. Filmmaker Steve Sessions (Malefic, Cadaver Bay) has expressed similar concerns. If anyone has any incite into this (and would like to help these individuals) please email me here. Any help would be appreciated. June 19: Ron Perlman in "At the Mountains of Madness"? While looking for news on Hellboy, I ran across this mention of Guillermo Del Toro's possible Lovecraft project "At the Mountains of Madness". I really hope this one gets made.... ~Future directors, you WANT Ron Perlman in your movie. Interestingly enough, when our conversation drifted to At the Mountains of Madness (Guillermo's H.P. Lovecraft project at Dreamworks), Guillermo told Ron flat out that there was a role with his name on it in the movie. Not the lead character, but a good one. While this is far from official, the vibe I got was that the project might have some trouble coming to life. Dreamworks, I know you're reading this: MAKE THIS MOVIE. If you do, you might not win a lot of Oscars, you may not quadruple your budget in the first three weeks of release... but you will be making history and the film will be beloved. H.P. Lovecraft has been hinted at a bunch of times (The Thing, In the Mouth of Madness, Dagon), but he's never really been done fully. Be the first, people. Anyhow, back to Hellboy...~ (Thanks to http://www.chud.com/) June 18: Lovecraft on your desktop! I've added two new wallpapers to the Pickman's Models page! These images started out as designs for Unfilmable.com T-shirts (which may still happen someday). They are for screens with 800 x 600 screen resolution. Click here to view them! June

The main site can be found here. (Thanks to Christian Matzke) June 18: War Gods of the Deep DVD review Check out Creature Corner.com's review of the 'vaguely Lovecraftian' Vincent Price film, "War Gods of the Deep". It was released on DVD as part of the MGM Midnite Movies line. ~The film is about a lost underwater civilization sort of. The civilization is actually extinct. So the primary focus of the film is not on underwater monsters but on a group of immortal sailors, led by Vincent Price, who live in caves that are remnants of that civilization. However, they are only immortal while they are in these caves, so they cant leave. They also must occasionally sacrifice one of their own to the devolved gill men who live in the ruinous subterranean matte painting .~ Click here for the rest of the review. (Thanks to Bryan Moore) Here's a website that might be of interest to those of you with short films. Below is a description of Fastshooters service. ~Fastshooters is the name for a series of 25 and 55-minute programs. TV stations work with (time) slots. We understand that most TV stations simply can't program individual short feature films of 3, 11 or 19 minutes. What we basically do, is prepare 'ready to air' tapes, filled with as many short films of the same genre as it takes to arrive at exact 25 or 55-minute programs. Obviously, we also add that little extra touch...~ Click here to visit Fastshooters.com. (Thanks to Patrick of

While looking for information on "London After Midnight" Frank Hummel came across a website for director Bruce G. Hallenbeck. It stars Veronica Carlson, who worked with Bruce in FANGS, and "Queen of the Bs" Debbie Rochon. The stories concern a phantom hitchhiker, a being made of darkness, a snow demon, a monster rabbit--and an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story IN THE VAULT.~ Bruce also has a short write-up of an un-produced screenplay called LOVECRAFT. ~LOVECRAFT You can read a much longer version here. I will be contacting the filmmaker for more information soon. More as it becomes available. (Thanks to Frank Hummel and http://www.paganhorror.com/index.html) June

Worst comes to worse, we'll see it on DVD this August if we miss it in the theater (unless that changes). (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) June 5: Translation Movie Weirdness I'm posting this request for help with the permission of William Johns (of The Lovecraft Library). Any help would be appreciated (I will also be trying to find out what I can). Help! I received a review of the 1993 movie "Beyond the Wall of Sleep", allegedly derived from the HPL story of that name, from a visitor to my website. It's in Spanish, so I asked a friend of mine who speaks the language to translate it for me. The results are ... weird. "NINE STARS OUT OF TEN" Evelyn's translation: In 1993 after a long period of recuperation from a serious hemorrhoid operation during which he could not sit up, dramatist director Barret Leigh had a perfect idea to film one of the most terror filled stories by Lovecraft. The author was inspired by a thousand-year-old legend in which when one bent down near a mysterious wall, one would have terrible and irreversible consequences where intimate parts of the body would break off. In the film the lead actor, who dies after being nailed, looses his bottom. The lead woman actress was in reality a blunderbuss. This is an excellent movie filled with extraordinary effects. "NINE STARS OUT OF TEN" Me again: Now, I've never seen the movie, so for all I know the main character's ass does indeed fall off, and the leading actress is indeed an antiquated firearm. But somehow I don't think so. Has anyone out there seen the movie? Does this review in any way resemble it? Is the translation incorrect, perhaps because Evelyn speaks a different flavor of Spanish (she's from Cuba, the author of the review is from Argentina)? Perhaps I am reviewing a porn movie on my site? (HPL would be appalled.) Or is this guy just pulling my leg? I know that very few movies allegedly based on HPLs work resemble the original story in any way. But this seems to be beyond the pale! Bill

The problems seem to have been corrected, and all pages are back to normal. Regular updates will resume tomorrow. Thanks again for visiting! June 3: Del Toro on Lovecraft film While skimming through the Hellboy Message Board I found Lovecraft film mentioned a few times. There is much more here, and I'm thinking of asking him a question or three myself. If anyone has a question they would like to see asked send them here. Fan Question: Since there has been a spate of (less than) fantastic interpretations of Lovecraft's tales in films and other media, do you have any ambition to improve this body of work by making one of your own? Which story would you
actually turn into a film anyhow? Guillermo Del Toro's answer: I adore "The outsider" it was the FIRST Lovecraft story I ever read. Difficult to do except as a short -all POV until the mirror comes into view... But next year, I'm hard at work in AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. I hope it comes through. Fan Question: With all this talk of a "Mountains of Madness" film, would you consider working with Rob Bottin on this one? The Thing is one of my faves, and I'd really like to see him get some work on another horror movie sometime soon. Del Toro's answer: Rob is a genius, he has done the best Lovecraftian effects ever. Yeah, he's high on the list. Might prove tough to afford though- (Thanks to The Hellboy Message Board) June 1: The votes are in! Here are the results from the first Unfilmable.com poll: "What is the best Lovecraft adaptation?" Below you will find the most popular features and shorts in order of the amount of votes received. I would appreciate any input you have in regards to these results. ~ Do you think something
listed as a feature should be a short or vice versa? If you're new to the world of Lovecraft cinema, this list would be a good starting point. So I hope you enjoy this list, but better yet, I hope you enjoy these films! Features: Out of Mind: The Stories

votes (Thanks to all who participated!) I've added a new News page to Unfilmable.com devoted to the upcoming Guillermo Del Toro film "Hellboy". While Hellboy is not a Lovecraft adaptation, it has been described as very Lovecraftian by many of it's fans. Some of the early character sketches and production artwork have a strong Lovecraftian feel to them. I hope you enjoy this new addition to Unfilmable.com. You can access The Hellish
