June 22: Casting Call for Portland Production!

For Immediate Release:

The following casting call was released today, via the Flesh of my Flesh yahoo group:

This weekend, I will be shooting a short film with a Lovecraftian script. I am in need of actors for this film: in particular --

- One (1) teenager, who will be the lead. If you are not an actual teenager, you need to look like you could be a teenager. You will need to deliver a hell of a lot of lines and deliver them convincingly as an angst-ridden, sullen, and at times terrified kid. Male or female doesn't matter, I can change the script to fit either. If you're under 18 you'll need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You should send me a head shot unless I know you personally. Also, we will need to meet sometime in the next couple of days, or at least speak over the phone, so I can evaluate your delivery.

- Several adult extras who can look prim, proper, and cleaned-up. If you're the parent or guardian of the possible minor mentioned above, you can be an extra, too!

Just so we're clear, this is all going to happen in the Portland, Oregon area. If you're not in the Portland area, but can come here for a shoot this Sunday, then it could work.

Email me if you want in: maxomai@aracnet.com. "Auditions" in the form of an interview and a reading will happen Thursday and Friday evenings, so let me know soon.

Mike promises to provide further information about the production soon...

(Thanks to Mike Smith)

June 22: Hive update

According to Hive author Tim Curran, the bloody-disgusting.com article (see: June 16th) was taken down because it was mostly rumor. A production company is indeed looking at Hive, but there are no active plans for Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge, Marebito) to direct a film version or for it even to be made...

June 16: BV Entertainment Announces DVD Release of THE HALFWAY HOUSE ~ updated ~

For Immediate Release:

Skouras/Ventura to Release "THE HALFWAY HOUSE" in August

North Hollywood, CA June 15, 2005 August 23, 2005, Skouras/Ventura will release Kenneth J. Hall's horror/exploitation/comedy THE HALFWAY HOUSE on DVD, the first feature on BV Entertainment's Fright Film Factory label. There will be both an R-rated and an unrated director's cut available at major rental and retail chains throughout the US and Canada.

The movie has already attained a strong fan following through festival screenings and received 4 1/2 out of 5 stars from Film Threat. Starring cult queen Mary Woronov (ROCK N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, EATING RAOUL) as an evil nun, it satirizes drive-in cinema from women-in-prison films to slasher flicks.

Both DVD versions will include a trailer and the music video "Halfway to Hell" by Insecto Circus. Both will be widescreen 1.85:1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 stereo surround sound. The unrated cut will include additional features such as an audio commentary

track by writer/director Kenneth J. Hall and producer Ed Polgardy, deleted scenes, and a making-of documentary entitled "Gut-Eating Monsters from Hell."

June 14: Let Sleeping Gods Lie

Animation seems to be perfectly suited to H.P. Lovecraft's indescribable horrors, so I was very excited when I stumbled across news of an animated adaptation of "At the Mountains of Madness". Director/writer, Sven Bonnichsen filled me in on all the latest news for this ongoing production...

Titled, "Let Sleeping Gods Lie", the film was inspired by "At the Mountains of Madness". The story concerns a pair of explorers (deep in the white wastes of Antarctica) who happen upon an unknown cave system. Inside they discover a sleeping hive of ancient, alien creatures -- and their doom.

The project is a work of digital animation with the "elder things" and locations (sets) being rendered with 3D animation software.

The actors will be added later using a form of rotoscoping. The style is described as "Neon-Gothic", which uses hyper-saturated colors. The Scarlet Star Studios production will have an anticipated running time of about 15 minutes.

The two actors (Carl Caputo and Andrew Stout) completed principle photography in Sven's own home, and he notes that they were good sports about being filmed in heavy black winter coats with stockings over their heads on the hottest day of summer...

Sven's first film, "Madness from the Sea" (inspired by "The Call of Cthulhu"), was shown at the 2002 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. He hopes to have 'Sleeping Gods' done in time for the 2006 festival, but may have a teaser-trailer ready for the 2005 HPLFF.

June 13: Cool Nameless City update!

Here's some cool info on the upcoming film, Nameless City...

In a recent email from director/writer Rob Sibley, he described the film as "in the vein of Hellboy" only darker. It has the mythology, action and tone (fantasy violence with some humor to lighten things up) of Hellboy with a healthy dose of Lovecraft's creatures! The special effects will be all latex effects with some CGI to enhance the color and lighting...

Look for concept art (both creature and character), behind-the-scenes pics and official website news coming soon!

June 13: Lovecraft inspired Asian horror? ~ updated ~

Here's the first ever effects shot from Memories of Murder director Bong Joonho's upcoming film, The Host. The film has been described as Lovecraftian, but whether is was inspired by Lovecraft or not remains to be seen...

The storyline has something to do with a mutated monster in the Han River. Effects are being handled by Peter Jackson's WETA digital.

update: WETA digital did not (contrary to early reports) work on The Host, and it seems that the film is nothing more than a river monster movie with no real Lovecraft connection...

June 13: Marebito Review Online

June 13: Sequel to Mountains of Madness!

please note: contains spoilers

In Bloody-disgusting.com's interview with author Tim Curran, he describes his upcoming novel Hive as a modern day sequel to H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness"; "Hive was supposed to be just a short story, a sequel of sorts to Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness”…well, then it became a novella and finally a full-blown novel. It's set in the present at an Antarctic research base on the eastern continental ice sheet. The characters are all modern people and the science is cutting edge. Basically, during the long South Pole winter, a field team discovers the ruins of the Old One's city in a sprawling subterranean network. They bring back some of the mummified aliens, too, and soon enough the entire base is having terrible nightmares and seeing weird apparitions. Men are found dead with their brains literally boiled out of their heads. The mummies are physically dead, but psychically andspiritually still very active. Dead, but dreaming, and our minds coming into contact with them reanimate those decayed minds and they begin to feed off us. That's a good part of the plot. The secondary plot is that at the station, a NASA-funded drilling team is cutting through the ice to a

subsurface lake a mile below using cryobot technology (the very sort of technology NASA wants to use to penetrate the poles of Mars and the ice sheets of Europa and Callisto, Jupiter's moons). The lake itself has been cut-off from the world since glaciation of the continent 40 million years ago. Not only is the lake intriguing them, but a magnetic anomaly at the very bottom. Anyway, what's on the bottom of the lake and the dead minds of the Old Ones will come together to harvest/drain the psychic energy of the human race in order to open a dimensional gateway to let through not only a horde of Old Ones but a primal, living chaos that will destroy time and space as we know it."

The hardcover (from Elder Signs Press) is already sold out, and limited copies of the trade paperback are still available at Shocklines...

June 13: Mr. Limpet and the Deep Ones!

Twitchfilm.net ran a contest recently in which the entrants had to put together their worst possible Guy Ritchie/Madonna collaboration. Here is one of the winning entries...

"Madonna in a remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet - however, it's not a straight remake of the film; it turns out Madonna becomes a Deep One as the film makes an excursion into Lovecraft territory. For some reason, this is also a non-animated musical comedy. Don Knotts plays Cthulhu."

June 4: An Evil Vision is coming

Writer/producer Gilberto Villarroel (Kaos Producciones) recently confirmed that he has completed a script based on "The Colour Out of Space". The project is called "Wedangutun: Visión Maligna", and is currently in the hands of Spanish producers. Wedangutun is an indian word that means "Evil Vision"...

Villarroel has also written a TV show containing 8 stories based on Poe, Lovecraft (including "Wedangutun") and R.L. Stevenson, and is awaiting the results of a national TV contest (in August) to see if it can be produced. If the project becomes a reality, they would all be shot using young directors...

All 8 episodes are based on the adventures of characters from "Chilean Gothic" (Villarroel's adaptation of "Pickman's Model"), and will star Bruno Mattotti...

June 2: Witch House cast announced!

Fangoria.com reports that Stuart (Re-Animator) Gordon's adaptation of "The Dreams in the WitchHouse" has been cast! According to the report, Jeffrey Combs will play Mazurewicz (The hero’s bizarre neighbor) and Ezra Godden (Dagon) will play the film’s protagonist (the obsessed student Walter Gilman) in Gordon's Masters of Horror segment...

Gordon also told fangoria, "THE DREAMS IN THE WITCH-HOUSE has always been one of my favorite Lovecraft stories. The image of a witch showing up in your bedroom in the middle of the night and dragging you out of bed and forcing you to murder babies is a nightmare that’s hard to get out of your head. And while most witches have black cats for their familiars, Keziah Mason’s is Lovecraft’s most memorable monster: Brown Jenkin, the rat with a human face. Besides Jeff and Ezra, I’ve got some babies and rats to cast."

Fangoria notes that this is the second time Combs has starred in a adaptation of WitchHouse, referring to an unreleased segment of the Charles Band Pulsepounders anthology called "The Evil Clergyman" (which lifted Witch's storyline and co-starred David Gale as the rat thing).

Ever watched a Lovecraftian short and thought, "I could do that?" Well here is your chance to prove it. The H.P. Lovecraft film festival announces its first ever, flash animation contest. Entries should fall into one of the two following categories.

1) Festival Openers - Short, Lovecraft-themed animations that feature the Film Festival logo.
2) Original Animations - H. P. Lovecraft-themed animations of any length.

Judging will be done by festival staff and winning entries will be shown at the festival (Oct. 7-9). In addition to seeing your flash on the big screen there are the following prizes.

1st prize - A DVD from the H.P. Lovecraft collection + a festival T-shirt
2nd prize - Re-animator CD + festival T-shirt
3rd prize - Festival T-shirt

All three prize winners, as well as any runners up will have their film shown on the big screen at the festival AND will receive a copy of the festival program listing their film. Deadline for entries is July 1st, which will allow time for judging prior to final selection of films for the festival.

Entries should be made by submitting content to the Newgrounds.com flash portal. The titles of the films should begin with "HPLF", which will designate them as a contest entry.

More info on the festival itself may be found at http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/submissions.htm
