March 31: House of Re-Animator, West goes to Washington?

Okay, so a few days back a little bitty rumor started popping up on the 'net about a possible fourth 'Re-Animator' movie, to tentatively titled 'House of Re-Animator'. Good title, no?

Well, before we reported on it with nothing to back us up with, I decided to check with a source that might know something about it: Stuart Gordon. Here's what he told us:

"I've been trying to talk Brian [Yuzna] into doing a fourth RE- ANIMATOR film. It's called HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR. The house in the title is the White House.

You can't get much scarier than George W. Bush.

The story starts with Dick Cheney having a massive heart attack and dying. Since he's been running the country, they need to bring Herbert West in to re-animate him.

West walks in to find Bush sitting on Cheney's bed shaking the body of the dead vice-president. "Wake up, Dick. Wake up." A secret service guy turns to West, "The President hasn't been briefed yet."

The movie could be described as RE-ANIMATOR meets DR. STRANGELOVE."

Far fetched? A bit, yes, but it must might work if they keep the 'Dr. Strangelove' quotient high. Who knows. Then again, considering the date, we might be in for a surprise ourselves...

March 30: That is not dead....

My Lovecraftian short film, "Halfway House", which was moving along nicely until I decided to move to Oklahoma has started to crawl again. The great Lovecraft inspired experimental band, "The Unnameable" have just sent me a superb soundtrack based on my screenplay. Clinton Green and Andrew McIntosh have done an excellent job of capturing the mood of Lovecraft through music and sound.
I would like to extend my thanks to both of them for there continued work, even though the short is still a long ways off.

And good news for Lovecraftian music fans, The Unnameable are working on new material. Stay tuned for updates!

You can purchase their debut CD, "But of that, I will not speak..." by clicking here.

You can also view my webpage for "Halfway House" here. I've added some pre-production sketches and graphics. More updates to come.....

March 26: Dream-Quest update: new pictures on DQ website!

Greetings, Dreamers!

This is just a quick note to let you know what's up with the Production so far. Animation is at the 42-minute mark, which is significant if you're into Douglas Adams.

I've added a bunch of new photos to the Picture Gallery, so be sure to check that out at your leisure: http://www.petting-zoo.org/Dreamquest_Pictures.html

I've added "support tiers" to the Wanna' Help section at http://www.petting-zoo.org/Dreamquest_Help.html, as I've had a few people mention they wanted to know more about the support levels. It's a new thing -- we'll see how it flies. Maybe it'll help us with a few unavoidable costs. Besides, the reception thing is going to be fun!

Again, if you know any Photoshop nuts or animation nuts, please bounce 'em my way. Sure could use the help!

Sleep well and deeply and remember everything.

Cheers,

Edward

March 26: The Unnameable - A Warning...

It is my dread duty to issue this terrible warning to all and sundry. A horror older than time itself is among us, and I must claim at least partial responsibility for the inevitable blasphemies that will engulf us all...

Today I received an electronic mail from McIntosh, containing the insane message that certain rituals and experiments we performed last year (against the desperate advice of our associates) are now available online for all to expose their senses to. These sounds are not meant for human ears, and should be avoided at all costs. The experiments included the sound recordings of certain rituals from the Ryleah Text which upon mixdown revealed singular vocal tracks which neither of us recorded, amplified sounds from a recording made in a certain tomb who's location does not bear mention, and cosmic sounds collected from the blackest voids of space who's significance should not be considered. We were forced to release these recordings by forces beyond our control under the title of The Unnameable "But of that, I will not speak..."

This was the last I heard of McIntosh. His neighbours recall a strange whirring sound emanating from his rooms, and he was not seen again.

I plead with you all, DO NOT go to http://www.mp3.com.au/artist.asp?id=11456 and expose your poor, mortal ears to the results of our terrible experiments. Nor should you purchase The Unnameable "But of that, I will not speak..." CD from http://ShameFile.tripod.com for AU$8ppd or US$6ppd, or for a trade or your own blasphemous music.

What is that sound? A door creaking open behind me...a wet thumping indicates that something approaches...must keep typing...heed my warning, mankind!...a scaled appendage falls on my shoulder...for pity's sake, let it be quick-

March 23: There Will Be No 'Thing 2'

Moviehole reports, "Despite rumours of a potential sequel, Universal has ruled out the possibility of The Thing 2. Rumours stared to fly that a sequel might be in the works about the time of the recent game was released. Not so it seems, according to the studio. "Universal sent out feelers about the Thing with no luck", a scooper tells Moviehole."

March 22: Evil Dead! The Musical

Evil Dead! The Musical
Directed by Chad Wise
February 28, 2003 - April 5, 2003
Boxer Rebellion Theatre

'EVIL DEAD! THE MUSICAL' RETURNS!

New Millennium Theatre Company will remount EVIL DEAD! The Musical, with new songs added, from February 28th through April 5th, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 pm.

EVIL DEAD! The Musical is the irreverent, unauthorized, musical parody of the cult classic horror film "The Evil Dead" that played to sold-out houses at the Rowhouse Outdoor Theater in October 2002. Called both 'transcendent' and 'delicious' by critics during its initial run, EVIL DEAD! The Musical pokes fun at all the well-loved and often scrutinized conventions and peculiarities of the film, paying homage to the original and appealing to its many fans. The show then expands on the highly charged emotions of love, friendship and fear felt by the characters as they must break into song to express them.

The original cast of EVIL DEAD! The Musical returns intact and includes Ehren Fournier, Robin Morgan, Jason Bone, Amanda Krupman, and Dorislee Jackson. Directed by Chad Wise, Assistant Director- Megan Piccochi, Musical Director- Jonathan Webb, Stage Manger- Ian McPhaden, Lighting Design- Allison Schaffer.

All performances are at the Boxer Rebellion Theater, 1257 W. Loyola, one block west of the Red Line Loyola L Stop. The show will run February 28th through April 5th, Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 pm. Tickets are $15 general admission and are available at the door or call 773-989-4515. www.nmtchicago.org

March 15: Gryphon Films to make "The Call of Cthulhu"

John Strysik sent along this exciting piece of news: Gryphon Films plans to make a feature film version of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu"..

The website lists it as 'In Development'. It will be produced by Brett Morrison, Robert Gryphon, and Wil Forbis.

~The H.P. Lovecraft brand of dark horror comes to the screen with an adaptation of his legendary tale of an omnipotent creature who, even in an eons-long slumber, terrorizes the dreams of empathic humans.

After observing a series of seemingly disparate events that occur around the globe, Francis Thurston comes to a terrifying realization: Cthulhu has awaken and seeks to reclaim the earth from the fumbling grasp of mankind.~

March 15: Win an S-Mart Ash!

Those cool guys over at Creature Corner have a contest to win an S-Mart Ash. Check it out!

~Damn Sideshow Toy. There, I said it.

For months now, the company that burst on the horror scene with some 12" Universal Monsters that blew our minds away a few years back have just steadily been getting cooler. 'Army of Darkness' figures, 'Twilight Zone' and 'Outer Limits' collectibles, Frankenstein and Wolfman pozers...they just don't stop. And that means more money from my wallet that must be sacrificed at their alter. So, damn them.

You, however, may not have to join in the damnation game. Sideshow being the cool cats they are have offered up one (1) S-Mart Ash toy for a loyal Corner reader. Though only seen as S-Mart Ash briefly in 'Army of Darkness', this is one of those toys that we horror fans didn't realize we wanted so badly until somebody made one. So let's thank Sideshow for that one, kids.

The winner will be chosen the same way all other Sideshow contests have been done. Send me an e-mail with a "yes" or a "no", and you're automatically entered. What you're agreeing to (or not agreeing to, your choice) is to be on Sideshow's e-mailing list, where you will get the latest info on what they have coming out and when. Trust me, that's a lot of stuff to keep up on. The winner will be chosen at random from all the entries, and those that say yes will have their e-mail addresses forwarded to Sideshow.

Interested? You know you are. The contest will run for two (2) weeks, ending on March 31st. One entry per person. S-Mart Ash toys are scheduled to ship in mid-April, so the winner with get theirs when the stores do. Luck you! To enter, send you response HERE.

Also as an added bonus, Sideshow has offered up the first two 'Army of Darkness' toys, Ash and Evil Ash, for 25% off! Just go to the site, buy the toy, and put in the word "ARMY", and BAM, 25% off. How cool is that?!

GOOD LUCK!!~

Make sure you insert S_Mart in the subject line of the email.

March 14: Shadow Over Louisville report

The appropriately named "S.O.L," was a success. That is not to say that it went smoothely, nooo way, but we did get about 50 people in the seats and had a lot of fun. We showed "The Yellow Sign," "Return to Innsmouth," and_Re-Animator_. In addition, there was food, giveaways, and general merriment. Tmowery@********** was gracious enough to donate some artwork and come all the way from Indianapolis.

A list of our plights:

Mass confusion resulted in a last-minute flyer campaign. We couldn't check any of the films because the theatre was occupied up until half an hour before us. Wrong cords in the DVD player for "Yellow Sign," resulting in fifteen minute delay. The (paid) projectionist for _Re-Animator_ didn't show up. DVD player wouldn't read the Neverwinter Nights Cthulhu Module .Avi file. Our sudden replacement projectionists (read: WE) put the print in backwards and had to rewind it, causing a further delay. Once the film got started, the camera began to wobble because of a loose screw, causing yet another delay.

Ultimately, everything that needed to be fixed got fixed. I did a lot of freaking out, especially since I had to announce everything (I think I handled it "eh, ok"). I think, maybe, if we do more planning, we can do a Shadow Over Louisville II next year.

The audience enjoyed it immensely, particularly TYS and Re-Animator. Now, after all this, I can sleep easily.

March 12: The Shunned House release details!

March 11: Lovecraft fan needs filmmaking tips!

Emo bloom emailed me seeking advice on how to get a Lovecraft indie production off the ground. I gave him some pointers that were given to me, but since I'm not a filmmaker, my help was limited. He is planning on doing a "quick version of THE STATEMENT OF RANDOLPH CARTER, & if that goes well i'd love to try recreating the frenzied terror of THE MUSIC OF ERIC ZANN. minimum actors, simple sets & maximum tension. i guess its all gonna be about sound, angles & subliminals, as for budget, well,... there isn't one, but i'm pretty ingenious & i know what i want. i'm gonna stick very closely to the original stories as i wouldn't want to tamper with the great ones own brain children (not good for the karma ) & i'll probably have to wait till the beginning of autumn (atmosfear) at least for randolph carter."

If anyone would like to help him, you can contact him here.

March 10: Beyond Re-Animator at Philadephia fest

The annual Philadephia Film Festival has been an increasingly exciting event for genre fans (Fango first caught GINGER SNAPS and HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS there, among other titles), and this year’s fest, running April 3-17, promises to be the best yet in terms of fright fare. Among the movies running in the Danger After Dark series are the world premieres of Robert Parigi’s psychosexual chiller LOVE OBJECT and J.T. (SOFT FOR DIGGING) Petty’s MIMIC: SENTINEL, and the North American premieres of Brian Yuzna’s BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR, Jorge Alguin’s ETERNAL BLOOD (a.k.a. SANGRE ETERNA, to hit video on the Fango label this June), Ryuhei (VERSUS) Kitamura’s supernatural samurai film ARAGAMI, Takashi Miike’s true- crime/gangster film GRAVEYARD OF HONOR and Paco Plaza’s Ramsey Campbell adaptation SECOND NAME. Also on the bill are Hideo Nakata’s DARK WATER, the Pang Brothers’ THE EYE, the Spanish docudrama ARO TOLBUKHIN: IN THE MIND OF A KILLER, co-directed by Agustín (IN A GLASS CAGE) Villaronga, and SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, a brutal thriller from the South Korean makers of JSA: JOINT SECURITY AREA.

In addition, there will be a pair of sidebars of interest. Spanish sensation Alex de la Iglesia will receive the fest’s Phantasmagoria Award, and his new feature 800 BULLETS and debut film ACCION MUTANTE will be screened. A focus on the films of the Shaw Brothers will showcase new 35mm prints of martial- arts classics like ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN and 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN. There’s plenty of worthwhile non- genre stuff in the lineup too, so click on the link above for more information.

March 10: Army of Darkness: Boomstick Edition

Sam Raimi's 1993 classic will be re-released on March 11.

What is this? This, friends, is proof that if you love a company too much for the discs they deliver to you, eventually they will take advantage of you. Again and again. Don't be fooled by the fancy- pants packaging, this is just a re-release of the 2-disc set that came out a few years back.

March 8: Unfilmable.com interviews Shunned House director, Ivan Zuccon!

Click here to read my interview with "The Shunned House" director, Ivan Zuccon!

Thanks to Ivan Zuccon and Enrico Saletti!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

March 8: Origins of "The Shunned House" storyline

"The Shunned House" screenwriter Enrico Saletti gave me a little background information on the origins of the film. It seems that it started out as a very different kind of film. The following was taken from an email I received from Enrico.

~ he [Ivan Zuccon] came to me and told me about this idea he had of shooting Lovecraft's The Shunned House. That's been one of my favourites Lovecraft's stories ever, along with The Music of Eric Zann which Ivan had in mind to throw in the project too. Originally Ivan wanted to make a movie with three different episodes running one after the other. H.P. Lovecraft himself was to introduce each one of them just like Alfred Hitchcock in the famous tv series. After discussing the matter for some time Ivan was captured by the new concept of the movie I had in mind, which led to the script that was finally produced: three stories well linked and interlaced together, and characters pulled back and forth in time by some evil forces acting inside the notorious Inn. ~

I would just like to add that I think Enrico did a wonderful job with the screenplay, and I think it is a real strong point of the film.

(Thanks to Enrico Saletti)

March 8: John Strysik's Nyarlathotep!

John Strysik sent in this very interesting rundown of his upcoming Lovecraft adaptation "Nyarlathotep".

~ 12-year-old Randy Carter liked mummies so much he wrapped his playmate up as one - and buried her.

10 years later he finds himself in an almost empty halfway house trying to purge his obsession - only to meet a mysterious showman with an Egyptian mania much darker than his own. The showman is older than the pyramids and, as Carter soon finds out, making a mummy is just the beginning. ~

John previously made the great short Lovecraft adaptation, "The Music of Erich Zann".

(Thanks to John Strysik)

March 5: Shadow Over Louisville: Lovecraft Film Fest

The following was posted to alt.horror.cthulhu.

Next Thursday (March 13th) at 6pm, the Film Liberation Unit and SAB will be showing Aaron Vanek's "Return to Innsmouth" & "Yellow Sign" and Bryan Moore's "Cool Air." Following the shorts, there will be a raffle for Cthulhiod prizes and a brief intermission. Then, at 8:30pm, we will be showing a 35mm print of Stuart Gordon's _Re-Animator_. All of this will be taking place in the Floyd Theatre at U of L (third floor of the SAC, E-mail me if you need directions). Tell all your friends and enemies about it. Admission = FREE.

March 5: BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR festival and TV (!) debuts

BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR, the Brian Yuzna-directed third in the Herbert West series, has been sold to the Sci Fi Channel (!) and will be airing on the cable station in June. The film’s extreme scenes (Fango editor Tony Timpone saw the film at last month’s American Film Market and loved it) will likely fall prey to Sci Fi’s Standards & Practices guidelines. Those who want to see it uncut will be able to check it out at the Philadelphia Film Festival (which will screen it three times) in April and at Fantasia this summer. Lions Gate releases an unrated DVD of BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR September 23.

March 4: Important message: Please read!

Hello one and all. Due to a problem with MSN's server I will most likely lose any and all correspondences sent to me after Sunday (March 2, 2003), and until future notice. March 2: Evil Dead 4 news

While reading a BUBBA HO-TEP review on 'Ain't It Cool News' I came across this mention of Evil Dead 4.

~Needless to say, Evil Dead 4 came up. I would love to see an Evil Dead 4 but please everyone let it lie. When they do they'll do it, right now they have more important, pressing if you think Evil Dead is even more important, things to do. Bruce's response was if you want Sam to do Evil Dead 4 you have to convince him not to do Spider-Man 2, losing argument.

Another question was if Bruce would direct Evil Dead 4. Bruce provided a very funny, physical answer that involved him asking what Sam would do and he acted it out, Bruce fell to the floor in one act and provided some pained expressions as a camera zoomed in on his face. Very funny.~

March 2: Italian Lovecraft films get distribution

Ivan Zuccon has just e-mailed me with the terrific news that all three of his indie feature films have been picked up for UK distribution by Salvation Films. His new Lovecraft adaptation The Shunned House will be in UK video shops in May, with the two Lovecraft inspired films - The Darkness Beyond and Unknown Beyond - following in June. The Shunned House also has distribution lined up in North America (Brain Damage Films) and France (Uncutmovies), and all three films will be released in Spain by the subtly named ImagenDEATH(!). LeoFilms ships the US edition of Unknown Beyond on 18th March.
