March 29: Independent Features and shorts wanted

Source: B-Film yahoo group

This might be of interest to some of you...

Hey Indies,

For any of you looking to get your films out to a larger audience I want you to know about First Look Rentals.

First Look Rentals is a brand new concept in independent film screening. We will rent and sell independent films without major distribution directly to viewers on DVD. Rental will be accomplished by internet rent-by-mail technology like Netflix, enabling the film to reach a wide audience. As a producer, you would earn a percentage of each rental and sale, and retain all the rights to your film. Basically, this is a good way to make money and build an audience for your film while leaving the door open for a major distribution deal. You can find more information at:

http://www.firstlookrentals.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=1

Right now we're looking for high-quality films for the launch of the site in April. If our concept sounds like it might work for you, Please contact me.

Currently our site is under construction. For questions and the address for sending screening copies to, send me an email at: drowland@verizon.net until our site is fully up and running.

(Thanks to Daniel Rowland)

March 29: Lovecraft inspired nasty

Caution: contains spoilers...

Here's an excerpt from chud.com's excellent interview with Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro.

S.J.R.: And the Behemoth?

Guillermo: The Behemoth at the end is 100% pure Lovecraftian lore. I just felt what's the nastiest, pissed off Crenoid creature we can come up with? So, it's a very slick character, but very diseased in the color palette. The other thing that I've never seen in movies well done is a battle with a tentacled monster except my favorite from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I think I was very curious to see a good battle with a creature that big at the end.

The rest of the interview can be found here.

In other Hellboy news:

Director Guillermo del Toro will be at Dark Delicacies (located in Burbank, California) April 10th at 2pm, signing copies of Hellboy: The Art of the Movie, as well as copies of the Hellboy novelization by Yvonne Navarro. Both must be purchased in store to be signed.

Additional information can be found here.

Hellboy opens Friday, April 2nd.

March 29: Does anyone really know?

OK, here's my weekly mention of Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash. It's from a recent Bruce Campbell interview...

Okay, I've gotta ask. There are rumors about that there exists at New Line a treatment for this 20 page Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash flick and they are trying to secure the rights to the character. Is there any truth to this as far as you know?

Bruce: Shadowy truth. Watery truth.

Check out the rest here.

March 25: Mountains of Madness not next?

Chud.com interviewed director Guillermo del Toro about his follow-up to Hellboy, and it doesn't look like At the Mountains of Madness will be it...

Here's what he had to say:

S.J.R: For a Hellboy 2, you've mentioned here and there about that and where, at least, you'd like to open it. How much of a reality is that and what are your plans?

Guillermo: Well, you know, I don't have plans. I love to get together with Mignola and speculate. I think I was perfectly happy creating a self-contained movie. If we're so lucky that we're able to do some more deranged stuff in a second one, so be it, but as of right now, I'm just waiting. I have to submit Mountains of Madness, which I'm finishing. If they don't go for it, immediately, I just calmly pack my bags, go to Spain and do another movie like Devil's Backbone, which I'm planning called Pan's Labyrinth. For me, it's very easy. Some colleagues of mine always complain that they're not getting this movie or that movie and I always say, 'Do something else? Do something small.' The worst thing you can do and this obviously comes from my Catholic background, is you can't get used to the limo picking you up at 7:00 a.m. and the catering being abundant or having two assistants. Screw it! If nothing happens, you should not wait for the paycheck to be there. Just pull up pants and go out and do a movie for $4 million.

S.J.R.: What is Pan's Labyrinth?

Guillermo: The Devil's Backbone, for me, was a metaphor of the Civil War in Spain. Pan's Labyrinth is, to me, the exact bookend to that. It's 1943 and the Fascists have won and it's the story of a fascist family that moves into an old house and the oldest daughter, who is twelve, falls in love with a fawn that lives in a ruined labyrinth behind the house. It's a little metaphor about fascism.

March 18: Colour from the Dark update!

Ivan Zuccon sent along the following update in regards to his upcoming adaptation of "The Colour out of Space"...

...I need to change homes and there is also a Festival in Italy (Tirrenia Trema) that will screen The Shunned House, my short films and the trailer for Colour from the Dark, this will be a good way to present and promote our past and future work."

He went on to add:

"I found the locations where we will set the film and am now writing a new version of the script with some new ideas and new characters. The special effects guys are working on some things and we are testing to see if they work.

I will meet some actors in the beginning of March. Some roles are already assigned to some very good actors."

March 18: 'Evil Dead 4' is no more?

Source: bloody-disgusting.com

Moviehole writes, "There's been a lot of rumours lately that New Line are working on using 'Ash' (Bruce Campbell's character from the Evil Dead series) for the next Freddy vs. Jason sequel - as well as recent news that Sam Raimi is interested in doing another "Evil Dead" film.

"Evil Dead" guru Josh Becker, who wrote 'the book of the dead', as well as working on three films, chewed the fat with us yesterday and discussed the rumours.

"There is no truth in the rumour", confesses Becker. "It's my belief that there will never be an Evil Dead 4. Bruce won't do it without Sam directing, and Sam has no reason to go backward and make another Evil Dead movie until his career falters, which it certainly isn't doing."

So is Becker happy about this resurgence in horror of late?. "Yes and no. Yes because I think horror films are a terrific place for young directors to start; no because most of them aren't scary and are worthless to the genre. I don't think anyone's made a legitimately scary horror film since Aliens in 1986."

Don't give up hope yet fans - but things don't sound as 'full speed ahead' as the rumour mill's been letting on."

Did you notice he only blasted the Evil Dead 4 rumor? Besides the fact, I [bloody-disgusting.com] have some solid sources that confirm the rumor of New Line getting that 20-page draft, and that Ash could still end up being in the midst of an epic battle between good and evil...

March 18: Does Carpenter have more Things?

Creature-corner did a story a while back that concerned John Carpenter discussing his possible plans for sequel to The Thing with the magazine SFX. Shortly after this came out, AICN called John himself who said he had been doing nothing Thing related for a long time...

According to creature-corner.com, this month's issue of the Australian version of Empire Magazine, however, has an interview with the man in which he discusses the fact that he does, indeed, have an idea for The Thing 2, but it's a matter that Universal won't let him direct it if he were to get behind it...

Watch this space for updates!

March 18: Uzumaki DVD update!

**MARCH 17: IMPORTANT NOTICE!**

I'm back...

...sort of.

My computer is finally back up and running. Unfortunately, I am now almost a month behind on my updates and correspondence. I owe many of you emails and will try and get to that as soon as possible. I would really like to thank each and every one of you for your patience (and continued support).

While I was away though, I made a decision to do something that I have discussed with some of you in the past...

...move my family to Oklahoma (from Ohio). This is something I had decided to do about a year ago (I think some of you thought I did this then). We will be making this move on Saturday (March 20th). Because of this, I will be unable to update Unfilmable.com for several more weeks. I will be making every effort to speed up this process, and would like to ask that you send me any updates you have (in regards to existing projects or new project announcements). The Forthcoming Terrors page is getting very outdated, and needs attention soon.

Send all correspondences (including requests for my new mailing address!) here.

I apologize for any inconvenience, and look forward to getting back to Unfilmable.com!

Thank you for your time!

Craig Mullins
