Bestiary (new images)...
March 30: The Mysterious Geographic Explorations
of Jasper Morello
For
Immediate Release:
The
Screenland Theatre (17th and Washington) in Kansas
City will host an animation festival featuring all
of the Oscar-nominated animated shorts for 2005.
Among the shorts is one titled "The Mysterious
Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello"
(27 minutes; Australia)...
The
review describes it as; "Set in a Victorian
Age in which steam-powered airships hover over smoke-clogged
cities, this is the tale of a disgraced aviator
who gets a chance to redeem himself on a voyage
of exploration to the edges of the known world.
Mark
Shirrefs superbly literary script draws from
several sources Joseph Conrad, Jules Verne,
Edgar Allan Poe, maybe even a bit of H.P. Lovecraft.
The film we are watching is actually a journal of
the voyage left behind by Jasper Morello, a navigator
who on an earlier trip was responsible for a fatal
accident. This new assignment is his chance for
a fresh start. (Think Lord Jim.)
But
he must leave behind his beloved wife, who nurses
the victims of a devastating urban epidemic. And
on this journey the aviators have a guest, a scientist
who endangers all of them when he insists on bringing
back a hideous creature whose blood may provide
a cure for the plague.
The
language, especially Morellos narration, is
a pitch-perfect parody of late 19th-century literature.
But its the visuals that will leave you awestruck.
The
film seamlessly melds computer animation, hand-drawn
effects, even what looks like stop-action animation.
The huge airships with their miles of clanging pipes
and clockwork gears are often strikingly realistic;
in contrast, the human characters are portrayed
only in silhouette. This is, I believe, a great
movie."

March 21: Evil Dead remake moves forward
New
horror mag Penny
Blood caught up with Bruce Campbell and got
the latest on the Evil Dead remake; "It'll
be a whole new story, though. It won't be with Ash,"
he said, "It'll be the evil book, and it'll
affect a whole new group of people in a different
situation. More like a reinvention. A lot of people,
they got really crabby on the Internet when they
first heard that type of stuff. But, we would never
do anything to insult them. The trick is to take
that premise - and we think it's a scary premise
- and use some cool modern day FX... so we won't
have green garden hoses in the shots. We wanna make
a flat out, scary-ass, un-rated horror film."

21: Exclusive From Beyond image!
Here's
the first look at Red
Hatchet Films stop-motion adaptation of From
Beyond courtesy of director/animator Michael
Granberry. Michael chose From Beyond because,
"[it] has always been one of my favorites,
and works great for a short film because it stands
alone, has one location and minimal characters.
I tried to stay true to the spirit and the tone
of the story, but as your website so eloquently
reminds us, a little something always gets lost.
I had to accept that going in, otherwise I'd never
have attempted it. Stop-motion animation, though,
has a sort of nightmare quality about it anyway,
so I thought it had the potential of becoming something
unique and entertaining..."
Principal animation has ended after an intense three
weeks, and sound mixing has begun. Michael hopes
to have a rough cut finished soon.

evokes the writer's classic At the Mountains of
Madness."

12: Perlman talks Hellboy 2
During
a recent interview with Sci
Fi Wire, Ron Perlman discussed the upcoming
Hellboy film (tentatively called Hellboy
2: The Golden Army) that may shoot later
this year...
Written
by Mike Mignola and director Guillermo del Toro,
"It's a compendium of a lot of elements
that they were not able to address in the first
one, because the first one was kind of a slave to
the backstory and who Hellboy is, how we come to
find him, etc., etc. Now they can kind of branch
out a little bit and get funky with it and hit some
of the other colors that existed in some of the
other comic books." Perlman says of the
film. Del Toro has stated that it "will
revolve around all the creatures of mythology rebelling
against humanity."

JUGGERNAUTS LovecraCked! The Movie
is closer than ever to being released, according
to Biff founder Elias...
The
[additional] score has been completed and
the final mix/mastering is around the corner.
Brian Bernhard of Blight Productions is putting
the finishing touches on what Elias describes
as, "One of the wackiest bits of Lovecraft-inspired
animation
" DVD menus &
box/disc art are almost finished, and a DVD
manufacturer/replicator has been chosen
Elias explains that the initial run of discs
is "mainly for promo, i.e.
|
reviewers,
distributors, festivals and of course the participating
filmmakers. These discs will also be made available
for sale on the Biff site and possibly through
one or two other indie online retailers as well.
When all is said and done... the plan is to
break even on the cost of this initial pressing,
create a significant awareness of the film in
online & print zines, web forums, cult crowds,
and then further through general word of mouth...
culminating in the official US & European
release of the flick on DVD by a decent indie
distributor or two."

March 1: Extended From Beyond debuts in HD!
|
|
Source:
http://www.chud.com/
The
fine folks over at Monsters
HD have done Stuart Gordon (and Lovecraft
film fans) a great service, the restoration
of Gordon's classic Re-Animator
follow-up, From Beyond! It seems that
after MGM was sold to Sony, the planned director's
cut DVD fell by the wayside...
In
stepped Monsters HD General Manager David
Sehring who funded the films restoration for
a planned summer screening on the 24 hour
horror channel.
"Being
a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft and Stuart Gordon's
work (they go hand-in-hand you know) I licensed
the television rights to FROM
|
|
BEYOND
for MONSTERS HD. Having known about this holy
grail of horror and the controversy surrounding
it, I made it a mission for MONSTERS HD to
restore FROM BEYOND's long-lost footage for
all the world to see. Monsters HD makes every
effort to preserve and present rare director's
cuts and European versions of horror movies
when the film elements are made available
to us. I asked Stuart Gordon as well as MGM
& Sony's technical services departments
if they could work together to restore the
legendary missing footage into a new high
definition transfer for MONSTERS HD's broadcast.
After some questions as to where the lost
footage was, the work of transferring the
material to High Definition and reconfiguring
the cut material into the film was supervised
by Stuart", Sehring said in a press
release posted by chud.com.
Stuart
Gordon described one of the restored scenes
as, "...Jeffrey Combs characters
pineal gland has gone out of control and hes
hungry for brains. He attacks a psychiatrist,
played by my wife [Carolyn Purdy-Gordon],
and he plants his mouth onto her eye socket
and starts sucking. And the material that
was cut out was when he actually sucks her
eyeball out, spits it onto the floor and the
eyeball lands looking back up at him and he
continues to suck her brains through the eye
socket and the camera pushes in. Its
really disturbing and its the longest
restored piece, my guess is its about
30 seconds or so. I think its the most
horrific moment in the whole movie."
The
world premiere screening is set to air June
10 at 8pm on Monsters HD (in advance of the
DVD debut). Monsters HD will also air other
Lovecraft-related films including The Unnamable,
Die, Monster, Die and
The Resurrected...
