March 28: Herbert West banned from the White House?

According to fangoria.com, Stuart Gordon's long rumored Re-Animator sequel, House of Re-Animator, is no more. "Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to happen," Gordon tells fango, "
We could not find funding for it; I think people are still too afraid of offending the Bush administration. I mean, here's Re-Animator, which is a very successful franchise, but nobody wanted to do that story. People are definitely afraid. These guys are known for payback. Everyone is just counting the days until they're out of office."

Gordon did pass along good news for Lovecraft fans though, "Thing on the Doorstep is moving forward, and I'm hoping that we'll be shooting it this summer. At this point I really can't say too much—we're just casting it now..."

For those of you wanting to see the further adventures of Dr. Herbert West, and interested in taking matters into your own hands, the Beaumont, Texas Boomtown Film and Music Festival (which takes place May 17) is accepting entries for their Re-Animator fan film contest. The films can be no longer than 3 minutes and must be based (even loosely) on Lovecraft's original tale. Entries can be a narrative short, fake trailer, music video or any other kind of fan film and the winner will be selected by Stuart Gordon! Deadline for entry is May 1st, and details can be found here...

March 20: Shirley scripted Poe!

Legendary horror/Sci-Fi author John Shirley revealed (via MySpace) that his modern day re-telling of Edgar Allan Poe's Ligeia has been filmed by Michael Staininger and Poe Vision Productions. Produced by Jeff Most (The Crow) and starring Michael Madsen, Sofya Skya and Eric Roberts, the film is currently in post-production…

About the film: Based on the classic Edgar Allan Poe short Story. A successful writer and scholar, Johnathon, becomes involved with a graduate student, Ligeia. She's dying of cancer and in trying to defeat death, she has been experimenting with forbidden ways to capture the human soul and to take the energy of stolen souls so to empower her own soul... so it can take over other living bodies after being forced out of its own, by death. The gothically beautiful, but scheming Ligeia tricks Johnathon's fiancee into breaking up with him. Jonathan and Ligeia fall in love-partly due to the mind control power she has developed. Their mutual obsession extends beyond her dramatic death...

March 16: MJ Simpson reviews Pickman's Model

The photography by Tacchi's cousin, director Gary Fierro (who also helped with the script) is particularly impressive during the scenes of Pickman and Thurber examining the canvasses in the former's cellar, using just the light from a handheld lamp to create a beautiful chiaroscuro effect. Pitch black shadows hide everything but the two men and their specific subject of inquiry, the room and all the other paintings disappearing completely into a stygian – frankly Lovecraftian – darkness. There's one particularly lovely shot of Thurber where Pickman leans in over his shoulder then steps back, effectively materializing and disappearing like ectoplasm at a seance...

March 9: Hunter's Moon will rise!

A film that Unfilmable.com was ready to throw on the "Unknown" (production status) pile, Curse of the Hunter's Moon, is back on track says new writer/director Doug Post! The project is currently being re-written by Doug and Steve "Bunny" Williams, with Doug's Bloody Rose Productions producing, and principle photography is scheduled for Fall 2009.

According to Doug, "The new script focuses on the H.P. Lovecraft mythos more and should be a lot scarier then originally thought."

The film started out as a remake of John H. Johnson's Curse of the Blue Lights, and originally, the storyline revolved around a group of high-school students who, despite a wave of recent disappearances, decide to throw an early Halloween party on the night of the Hunter's Moon. They are unaware, however, that Krul, one of the last ghouls, is planning to bring the Queen of the Ghouls back to life-but he needs bloody sacrifices to do so, and has a dead army to help him get them...

Doug promises more news as it's available...

Lovecraft Collection® Volume 5: Strange Aeons (The Thing on the Doorstep) and the upcoming re-mastered releases of Volume 2: Dreams of Cthulhu (The Rough Magik Initiative) and Volume 3: Out of Mind (The Stories of H.P. Lovecraft).

The H.P. Lovecraft Collection® Volume 5: Strange Aeons (The Thing on the Doorstep).

Strange Aeons: The Thing on the Doorstep, directed by Eric Morgret and featuring music by composer Richard Temple (Untraceable, Ghost Rider), is a unique tale about the unfortunate match between scholar Edward Derby and Asenath Waite, a young heiress with mysterious hypnotic powers. Soon after their marriage, Edward exhibits severe mood swings and radical personality changes. What is the source of Asenanth's sway over Edward? What influence does her deceased sorcerer father (Ephraim Waite) have over her? The only thing standing between Asenath and her unspeakable plans to sow death and madness is Edward's graduate advisor, professor Dan Upton. But is Dan too late to stop what has been set into motion? The film includes English subtitles, audio commentary by director and screenwriter, a bonus

"making of" featurette, and slideshow.

Also on this DVD are Patrick Weber's short film Maria's Hubris (also based on Lovecraft's Thing on the Doorstep) and the animated shorts From Beyond by Michael Granberry and Don't Feed the Book by Robin Ator. Bonus features include: an interview with director John Carpenter, teasers from the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, trailers for upcoming films, and a four-page booklet.

The DVD is rated R for brief nudity and language, running time is 120 min and retail is $19.95...

You can purchase The H.P. Lovecraft Collection® Volume 5: Strange Aeons here.

The H.P. Lovecraft Collection® Volume 2: Dreams of Cthulhu (The Rough Magik Initiative).

Rough Magik is the pilot episode for a proposed BBC television series starring Paul Darrow (Blake's 7, Doctor Who) and Gerrard McArthur (A Touch of Frost, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers). The Night Scholars, a clandestine organization setup to monitor the effects of the alien sleeping god Cthulhu, have come to a single, incontrovertible conclusion: Cthulhu is waking and is affecting weaker minded people (Dreamers) causing death and chaos. With the help of the mysterious Mr. Moon (Paul Darrow), they launched an aggressive campaign against the Dreamers but were disbanded by the Home Office after they trod on the toes of some powerful people. Now years later, the old magic is returning, Cthulhu is rising, and there are more Dreamers than Mr. Moon can handle as he struggles to rebuild the Night Scholars before its too

late. The film also includes an audio commentary by writer/producer Stephen W. Parsons, a production still slideshow, and an eight-page color booklet on the characters and proposed episodes of the Rough Magik series.

Also on this DVD are Bob Fugger's short films Terrible Old Man & From Beyond, and Christian Matzke's short films Experiment 17 & Experiment 18 - The Hexenhammer Projekt. Bonus features include an interview with Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, and an interview with the crew of Terrible Old Man.

New features for this release include Experiment 17 by Christian Matzke, Experiment 18 - The Hexenhammer Projekt by Christian Matzke, English subtitles for Rough Magik, English subtitles for Terrible Old Man, widescreen presentation where possible and a new DVD cover and title...

The DVD is PG-13 for language and has a running time of 120 min. Retail is suggested at $19.95...

For more details, click here.

The H.P. Lovecraft Collection® Volume 3: Out of Mind.

Out of Mind: The Stories of H.P. Lovecraft, the acclaimed Bravo! television movie, stars Christopher Heyerdahl (Kingdom Hospital, Stargate Atlantis, Smallville) and Michael Sinelnikoff (If Looks Could Kill, The Lost World: The Series). The film is a quasi-documentary about Lovecraft in which the author interacts with one of his fictional characters with dialogue taken directly from his collected personal letters and elements from multiple of his short stories such as "The Statement of Randolph Carter" and "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward." There are a plethora of allusions to Lovecraft's mythos for the astute fan, but the film is also a great primer on the philosophy and literary works of H.P. Lovecraft for the uninitiated. The film includes two audio commentaries both featuring actor Christopher Heyerdahl and director Raymond Saint-Jean, with cinematographer Serge Ladouceur joining them on

the second track.

Also on this DVD are John Strysik's short film The Music of Eric Zann, and Aaron Vanek's short films The Outsider & My Necronomicon. Bonus features include an exclusive interview with the crew of The Music of Eric Zann, audio commentaries on Vanek's short films, an interview with Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, trailers for upcoming Lovecraft films, and an 8-page color booklet.

New for this release: English subtitles for Out of Mind, English subtitles for The Music of Eric Zann, English subtitles for The Outsider, widescreen presentation where possible and a new DVD cover...

Volume 3 is rated PG, and retails for $19.95. Expected released date is March 15...
