May 24: Maelstrom Productions Wraps Lovecraft Feature Production ~ updated ~

For Immediate Release:

Seattle (PRWEB) May 24, 2005 -- Seattle’s Maelstrom Productions (www.maelstromproductions.com) has completed principal photography on its feature adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s "The Thing on the Doorstep."

The shooting took 18 full days and resulted in 28 hours of footage that will be edited for the 90-minute production. "Strange Aeons: The Thing on the Doorstep" is expected to be released in the

fall.

"The locations we used sprawled all over Washington state, from a mental institution to a college campus, to a mansion that was more than 10,000 square feet," Director Eric Morgret explained. "And a graveyard -- every horror movie needs a graveyard."

After shooting scenes in various places stretching from Bellingham to Tacoma, Morgret selected the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in the Queen Ann Hill section of Seattle for the graveyard scene of "Strange Aeons: The Thing on the Doorstep." The cemetery is the same one seen in the opening credits of the HBO show, "Six Feet Under."

The mansion used for the production was built in 1888, Morgret said, and is now owned by Jesper Myrfors, former art director of Wizards of the Coast and the creator of the new game, Clout Fantasy.

"Every place we went, people were great to work with," Morgret said. "They were all committed to helping us and very helpful."

"Strange Aeons: The Thing on the Doorstep" is a dark tale centered around Dan Upton, a Miskatonic University professor of primitive religions played by J.D. Lloyd, his teaching assistant Edward Derby played by Erick Robertson, and his mysterious, new student, Asenath Waite, played by Angela Grillo. The feature production is a tale of wizards, shallow graves and magic of the blackest kind around a campus whose halls have echoed for many years with the footsteps of some of society’s most vile trespassers.

"Adapting Lovecraft for the screen is a huge challenge," admits screenwriter K.L. Young, "but I think fans will find it a faithful, if updated adaptation." Both Morgret and Young have hinted that the Strange Aeons title may be a banner for future Lovecraft adaptations.

The project is hip-deep in post-production, and a final cut is expected by early fall 2005. Morgret said Maelstrom’s post-production sound team is currently seeking a computer effects person to finalize some of the scenes.

Maelstrom Productions has also released a DVD of is original short adaptation of "The Thing on the Doorstep," which was an official selection of the 2003 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Ore.

May 24: Stallone and Poe?

May 23: New Zann images!

Here's the latest on Anna Gawrilow's stop-motion adaptation of "The Music of Erich Zann"!

Anna reports that the film is moving along nicely although they
"...had some very bad flickering trouble caused of unstable lightning, that is sometimes a kind of stop motion disease."

She went on to say that, "We are shooting now for 3 weeks and things are going well. Next week we are going to finish the first scene, but not the first scene in the movie, because we shot the last scene at first. It is the most difficult one and the longest. I can say we finished up already 25% of shooting..."

In this version of Lovecraft's tale, Erich Zann is a piano player and only likes to play atonal music. Since nobody wants to hear that, he survives by playing at night in crappy honky tonks with cranky singing jezebels for little money...

May 22: The Nameless City awaits!

Director Rob Sibley sends news of an interesting film currently underway in New Jersey. The project, entitled Nameless City, is "based loosely on the works of H.P. Lovecraft"...

Here's a synopsis:

"Paranormal Investigator Alan Moore (Rob Sibley) deals with the strange and unusual on a daily basis. This time he's bitten off more then he can chew when a demon from the 17th century is resurrected and takes form in Thomas Murphy, a post high school graduate. Things take an even stranger turn when a Night-Gaunt appears out of the water's of a local cranberry bog, wreaking havoc on anything in it's path. Jordan (Rose Bender) is the one survivor to face the Gaunt and keep her life. Together Alan and Jordan must un-ravel the strange things happening at sun down and put an end to all the demonic chaos occurring in New Jersey."

Rose Bender

Rob Sibley

According to Rob, "Pre-production is going smoothly, and we've nailed down the cast with Rose Bender (as Jordan) in the female lead and myself Rob Sibley (as Alan Moore) in the male lead. The script has been completed...", he went on to add that, "this is part one of a planned trilogy."

May 19: New Cool Air on the horizon!

Longtime genre director Albert (The Sword and the Sorcerer, Cyborg) Pyun is finally tackling Lovecraft with an adaptation of Cool Air. He recently gave fangoria.com the scoop on the upcoming project. "We’re shooting now in Los Angeles and will wrap this Friday," Pyun told Fangoria, "Robert Ladesich is the producer, and a new screenwriter, Cynthia Curnan, adapted the short story. Morgan (Space: Above and Beyond) Weisser stars. My company, Filmwerks, will supervise distribution via Chris Davis International, and we hope to have it ready for release by October, just in time for Halloween!"

Fangoria reports that Pyun has been a fan of Lovecraft, and this story, for years, and didn't hesitate when he saw the chance to bring it to the screen himself. "I’ve been a fan of it since I was a child," he says. "It always stuck in my head as something I wanted to put on film. Then I happened to read Cynthia Curnan's screenplay last year, and it captured my vision of the tale. I knew this was the perfect adaptation." He went on to add, "I especially enjoyed shooting the main character’s heart attack because of its surprising twist in the story and its drama. Morgan conveyed the character’s bewilderment and fear in mesmerizing fashion." The director says the film won’t rely on blood and guts, and that: "[We’ll have] more atmosphere and getting inside the character’s head. There are a few effective effects shots, but I loved the screenwriter’s take on the main character’s internal paranoia and imagination. What is or isn’t real?"

The cast also includes Crystal Green as the doctor (in a gender switch from the story), Wendy Phillips as the landlady and Virginia Dare as her daughter Estella (another sex change). Norbert Weisser (The Thing) plays a mysterious lodger with a dark, twisted secret...

May 11: Cthulhu needs your help

For Immediate Release:

CTHULHU FILM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS:

All Lovecraft fans and lovers of film in the Seattle area this summer. Arkham NW Productions LLC is in the process of putting together a daring attempt to tackle a smart psychological horror film. This is not a slasher film and it is not camp. We are filming a high-end adaptation of the Shadow Over Innsmouth that digs into the horror that Lovecraft imbued in his piece -the inevitable horror of heredity. We are making a coming home again film couched in horror. We are very proud of our script and are looking for like minded individuals who want to reach for the summit. People who are willing to work hard to bring something special into this world. Address all queries to Arkhamnw@yahoo.com

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY:

Arkham NW Productions consists of a group of like-minded individuals in close geographic proximity (Seattle, WA and Portland, OR) who joined together to make a film subsequent to an understanding of our common goals. Most significantly, we share two passions: An intention to make great art in our home territory of the Pacific Northwest, using local talent and reflecting a discreet set of local values and identifying characteristics, and, a strong-willed opposition to the direction taken recently by the nation at large, toward media-fueled ignorance and bigotry, war and environmental spoilage, greed and disregard for the welfare of future generations.

We feel that the best way to advance these agendas jointly is through a feature film production, Cthulhu, with other films to follow. Market research shows that a first film should have a built-in audience that is likely to see the picture regardless of media promotion and critical response. The young, urban audience for horror films is that guarantee, a demographic attentive to alternative media (which tends to be left-leaning) and in which cultural product choice is often steered by word-of-mouth and among affinity groups on the Internet. It is also a well-established tradition in which horror successfully delivers social and political messages through the use of radical metaphor: witness the popularity of such films as Dawn of the Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, both of which incidentally have been remade. In this respect the genre is ideal for our purposes, which would be less well-served by a subtler approach. Horror, we believe, will offer us the latitude to create a piece of high art which will make a bold statement about the state of the nation and the assumptions of the larger culture.

Given Seattle’s cultural prominence and wealth of native talent, we feel that it is very unusual that a Seattle-based independent feature film has never received theatrical distribution. We believe it is time for this to change...

Visit the official Cthulhu website for further information.

May 7: Giamatti's a Lovecraft fan...

In the June 2005 issue of Playboy, actor Paul Giamatti (Sideways) expresses his interest in the writings of H.P. Lovecraft (in the 20Q interview). Wonder if he would consider acting in a Lovecraft adaptation...

Q11

Playboy: How crazy-or should we say "eccentric"-are you?
Giamatti: I talk to myself constantly. Is that eccentric, or am I losing my mind? Or is it just sad? I'm obsessed with things. I have to have certain kinds of books around me. I'm always interested in books by H.P. Lovecraft. All that early pulpy horror stuff is kind of interesting to me. I love to buy comic books, too...

Q20

Playboy: Sure, but a gold statue would be nice too.
Giamatti:
Yeah, where's my little gold man? A nomination would mean greater cash flow, plus I'd be able to buy more Lovecraft and comic books...

Good God, man, they've put it online to be freely downloaded!!

The latest rituals investigations by The Unnameable have been released (gods spare us) as a free mp3 EP by Dreamland Recordings. "Graves Are Not Harde to Digg, Nor Acids Loth to Burne" contains 3 new tracks, following up The Unnameable's sordid debut CD "But Of That I Will Not Speak.". These loathsome pieces are entitled:

1 - The Black Gulfs of Space
2 - Teeth and Claws Sharpened on Centuries of Corpses

The Unnameable create dark soundscapes inspired by Lovecraft's writings, sound worlds of crawling chaos and unspeakable monstrosities.

Both "Graves." and "But of That, I Will Not Speak." are available as free downloads from http://The_Unnameable.tripod.com, at least until saner parties withdraw these terrible recordings public availability indefinitely.
