~ HELLBOY helmer Guillermo del Toro has a new horror film in development at Revolution Studios/Columbia called CRIMSON PEAK. Its the fucking scariest ghost story ever, del Toro tells Fango. Since both MEPHISTOS BRIDGE and IN THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS [based on works by Christopher Fowler and H.P. Lovecraft, respectively] have stalled for various reasons, I decided to write an original script. Its set in the Victoria era, but will be much different and much scarier than THE OTHERS. Del Toro also reports that he saw an advance cut of GOTHIKA (due November 21) and liked it. [Director] Mathieu Kassovitz is a friend of mine, he says, and GOTHIKA is the CITIZEN KANE of Dark Castle horror films. Stay tuned for more details on CRIMSON PEAK. (Thanks to http://www.fangoria.com/) Here's the latest on Charles Dexter Ward's upcoming trilogy of films based on The Call of Cthulhu (the first film is entitled, The Crawling Chaos). ~"The project "Call Of Cthulhu" is advancing and the music for the three films is in the process of being recorded with my group, The Slow Machine. We play music similar to the Who, the Doors and Pink Floyd, and our difficult task is the composition of the music for the trilogy "Call Of Cthulhu". But the psychedelic spirit of the group will help us. Especially since there are only two of us! My pal Jimbo (battery, percussion, gong, low) and me (electric/acoustic guitar, keyboards). But since improvisation is an obligation of the laws of the psychedelism, we will surely finish quickly!"~ (Thanks to http://www.weisy-productions.tk/) October 31: Lions Gate Goes Horror Crazy! for an Ass Kicking The latest rumblings keeping that dream alive are, of course, the rumored Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash team up film, and in a recent interview with Zap 2 It, Robert Englund gave his take on what a good way to end it all this might be... "It would have to be a phenomenal script. It would have to be Bruce and Sam Raimi locked in a Palm Springs hotel for six weeks. It would be great for him and great for us. We could put the franchises to bed with a big, super, pop-culture, camp epic." How right he is in what a great way to end all the sequels this might be, how wrong in he is in theory that it actually would. If the film was done well (better than Fvs.J I should hope) and it managed to be even moderately successful you know the sequel wagon would keep on rollin'. Check out the entire
interview with Englund (in which he also discusses the possibility of
a new V movie) right here.

(Thanks to Ivan Zuccon) The November issue of Fangoria (#228, on sale now) has a lengthy retrospective on Richard Blackburn's 1973 vampire film "Lemora - A child's Tale of the Supernatural". Blackburn has this to say in regards to the films literary influences: ~"The two literary influences on the script were H.P. Lovecraft's Shadow Over Innsmouth and Arthur Machen's 'The White People,' " he reveals. "I remember reading a review of the movie in Postif, and the French nailed those two big literary influences, which confounded me. They were very perceptive, and I didn't know anybody even knew this stuff!... Robert Fern (the films producer) goes on to say..."We were in the same class as Jim Morrison, and we all did our around the same time. Richard and I got along terrifically, and he was so interested in Lovecraft that we thought a horror film would be a good idea..."~ The entire article is very well done, and definitely worth a look. (Thanks to Fangoria Magazine) October 25: Dead again From Toronto Eye Weekly: EVIL DEAD 1 & 2: THE MUSICAL Featuring Ryan Ward,
Mackenzie Lush, Danielle Meierhenry. Directed by Christopher Bond. Written
by George Reinblatt. Created by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond.
Presented by Beyond Chutleigh Productions. To Nov 1. Thu-Sat 8pm; Fri-Sat
11pm. $20. Tranzac Club, 292 Brunswick. 416-723-3845. Beyond Chutleigh's remount of Christopher Bond and George Reinblatt's musical adaptation of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films comes just two months after the close of its first run. Its creators say they've made changes based on criticisms they received the first time around, tweaking a few songs, adding some gore and rejigging the set to free up some space on stage. The Tranzac Club's casual barroom theatre is a perfect fit for Evil Dead -- it's the kind of play you want to drink at. Plus, the stage is large enough to accommodate the first of the play's nifty gadgets: an oversized copy of the Necronomicon, the evil book at the centre of the Evil Dead story, mounted just above the stage, which flips open to reveal a projected intro. From there, we meet Ash (Ryan Ward) and his four friends, who break into a cabin in the woods for a vacation. When they find a stash of weapons, an old tape recorder and a battered copy of the Necronomicon, hell literally breaks loose and rampages around the cabin, largely in the form of wisecracking demon-zombies. The songs suffer on the musical end but boast some genuinely funny lines. The singing is competent -- most of the cast have recognizably amateur but not unpleasant voices -- and with the exception of Daniel Krolik, who overplays redneck Jake, the actors have a good grasp of the films' campy B-movie humour. As Ash, Ward occasionally falls out of character, but nails his best, most over-the-top lines. All involved appear to be having a grand lark with the material, which makes a huge difference with this kind of theatre. You can't blame them; Michelle Alderson-Smith has given them a wonderfully interactive stage to play on, and there's plenty of gleefully squirting stage blood to frolic in. The production has flaws, but they're minor, not the sort to worry about in a production of a zombies-and-chainsaws musical. If you must, sit in the front row; the blood in your eyes will distract you, and you can enjoy Evil Dead for the romp that it is. - JOEL MCCONVEY (Thanks to Dan Clore) No, this isn't in
reference to the Lovecraftian short film, "Halfway
House", that I have been developing this year. It's from
an entirely different production, so it looks like I'm gonna have to
think up a new name... From: moviehole ...These beauties appeared in the inbox today. Theyre the first photos be released from "The Half-way House", a retro-wild horror flick for cult and monster geeks. Its also just been revealed that the star of the film is the queen of coolness, Mary Woronov. She plays Sister Cecelia, the insane nun hiding a horrifying secret deep below the Mary Magdelon Halfway House For Troubled Girls. Click here to check out the exclusive pics. "The Half-way House" is writer/director/producer Ken Hall's homage to the AIP H.P. Lovecraft horror films and "women in prison" movies he grew up seeing at the drive-in along with the slasher films that he helped create effects and write for in the 1980s. If Tarantino is retro-recreating the grindhouse kung fu flicks of his youth with "KILL BILL", Ken is delivering with a spot-on bloody valentine to the fun horror movies he loved as a kid and laments seeing nothing like out there for today's horror audiences. This is shock and flow (blood that is) horror to wake up today's kids and make their parents howl with horrible delight... Thanks to 'Sam' (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/
and http://www.moviehole.net/) Ken Hall (creator of the Puppetmaster series, FX fella, and all-around cool cat) has gathered a talented team of monster lovers for his film The Halfway House, a Lovecraft-inspired roll of celluloid for us to chew on. Said to be a dangerous concoction of cthulhu mythos, women in prison flicks, and a little bit of AIP goodness, Halfway House concerns a gal who goes undercover at a church-run halfway house for troubled girls (sounds delightful already) looking for her sister who has mysteriously disappeared. It appears this house misplaces girls often, the nun (played by Rock 'n Roll High School's Mary Woronov) has an evil streak to her, and the priest has a few secrets of his own. But the main question appears to be: what the hell is in the basement?! Until we find out for ourselves, the creators of The Halfway House have sent us a slew of pictures to feast our eyes upon. For more details on Hall's latest endeavor, a cast and crew breakdown filled with a bunch o' lovely faces, and a set diary click HERE for the official site. Source: Aint it Cool Bruce Campbell tells Capone of Aint it Cool, "What's more likely--not much more likely, but a little more likely (than Evil Dead 4)--is the other rumor concerning Ash vs. Freddy vs. Jason. We have been talking about doing an Ash loan out, like actors used to do when they were under contract, loan out an actor to another studio. In this case, we'd loan the character of Ash. But it would have to be contractual that Ash would have to kick both their asses. He would have to win, or I wouldn't do it. The idea has been bandied about on a purely bull**** level by junior executives at New Line who may not have the sperm to kick it up to the decision-making level. If anyone was really serious, the franchises would have to talk." (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) October 21: Is Alien vs. Predator really like "At the Mountains of Madness"? Here's the storyline according to Darkhorizons.com... As far as the story, we are told that in the past, the Predators used the Aliens for hunting purposes, as a right of passage for the young Predator to become men (er, for lack of a better term). We see one such battle play out in an Aztec temple. Supposedly, the Predators were seen as Gods to the Aztec people (some shades of 'Stargate', it would seem), who built them their temples for worshipping and battle purposes. They showed some storyboards of one Predator defeating an Alien, holding its severed head in victory, as well as some boards where three Predator are overrun by thousands of Aliens, and upon realizing that they have clearly lost the battle, they activate their self-destruct. This is why so many ancient civilizations have been wiped out; Predator hunting failures. Flash forward to present day, where a group of scientists have found one of the ancient Predator temples under an Antarctic icecap. The story revolves around 5 "teenage" Predators who are set to undergo their right of passage with the Aliens at this newly discovered temple, with the humans caught in the middle. There was also some brief discussion about the Predators testing out their new weapons technology. The video showed one example, a modified shuriken throwing star (apparently this weapon is 'in' again after 'Underworld'), which starts as a small handle with a trigger and expands into 6 elongated razor blades. This was actually pretty cool looking. Anyways, that pretty much rounded out the presentation. They quickly flashed some shots edited together from the two respective franchises, and rounded it out with a tagline (which may or may not be the final one), "Whoever wins...we lose." All in all, hard to tell too much about the final product from the small amount shown". Thanks to 'Agent G'. Raimi apparently also said that he'd love to do a fourth "Evil Dead" film, the first three of which starred Bruce Campbell as Ash. (Thanks to http://www.comingsoon.net/) October 17: Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash Rumors True Source: Fangoria With New Line seeing the blockbuster potential of the Freddy vs. Jason franchise - it's earned almost $82 million domestically - rumors quickly spread that the studio might be considering adding Ash, from the "Evil Dead" films, to the mix. Ash was played by Bruce Campbell three times. Was it just a fanboy dream? Nope, it's true! Fangoria reports... FANGORIA has learned that New Line Cinema is seriously considering adding Ash (Bruce Campbell) to the inevitable FREDDY VS. JASON Round Two that the studio has in development. This is not some Internerd rumor, though the notion has been tabled out there in horror fandom for months. Sure, weve heard about other permutations for a follow-up to the blockbuster rumble (everything from FREDDY VS. JASON VS. LEATHERFACE to VS. CHUCKY to VS. MICHAEL), but the Ash scenario, evidently, is the only one that New Line is treating as a legitimate idea. Brian Yuzna talked with Sci-Fi Wire about why it took so long to see Beyond Re-Animator (review), which is being shown on the Sci-Fi Channel tomorrow night! Read on for the story. "Brian Yuzna, who produced and directed the upcoming SCI FI Pictures original presentation Beyond Re-Animator, told SCI FI Wire that it wasn't just financial concerns that caused 13 years to pass between Re-Animator sagas. "I went through a lot of different ideas and took a lot of suggestions for a sequel, but there wasn't anything that really grabbed me," Yuzna said in an interview. "The idea that I kept coming back to was the notion of trapping the soul upon death and dealing with why zombies act so weird." At one point, Yuzna considered revisiting both of the central characters in Re-Animator and Bride of Re-Animator, Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) and Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs). That fell by the wayside when Yuzna realized Beyond Re-Animator would become a movie "about a couple of middle-aged doctors, when Re-Animator is really more about young doctors, medical students." Yuzna then developed a script in which an imprisoned Dr. West befriends Howard Philips (Jason Barry), a medic at the prison where he's incarcerated. Philips is an admirer of Dr. West's handiwork, and it's not long before zombies start acting weird again. Yuzna acknowledges that Combs is the key figure in the Re-Animator saga. "I've always seen Jeff as essential," the filmmaker said. "I knew we needed him and Dr. West. He was involved with noodling out the story and coming up with ideas [when ideas for a sequel were first bandied about more than a decade ago], but because there was such a long period of time where it lay fallow, he wasn't so much involved as we developed the version that we shot. Once the script went to him, Jeff certainly had a lot of ideas about how West should be treated, and a whole lot of his ideas are taken to heart because he is sort of the expert on West. I used our previous discussions. What we did with West, our interpretation of West, coincides with Jeffrey's." Beyond Re-Animator airs Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the SCI FI Channel."
