18: Del Toro's Madness!
More
good news from Guillermo del Toro regarding
his dream project, At the Mountains of
Madness...
In
an interview with IGN, del Toro said that,
"If it comes to fruition I'd rather
do that immediately while the iron is hot.
But it all depends on so many factors - creative,
personal - that every time I predict what
I'm going to do next, I fail."
He also spoke of the challenges that the Lovecraft's
source material presents, "The albino
penguins, the gigantic city ... The hard thing
about that novel is it's very much a record
of an expedition, so the narrative is brilliant
in that it's a little bit dry but it's not
character-based
There are many characters
that you don't know - you don't even know
who the hell the expedition is [made up of]
until you have it referenced in another book
of Lovecraft's."
If
Madness does indeed get a green light,
del Toro would like to start work it as soon
as Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
is finished...

October 18: The future
of Hellboy?
Hellboy
vs. Universal's Monsters? It could happen
according to Guillermo del Toro
At
last weekends New York Film Festival, del
Toro revealed that he would love to see Hellboy
take on the Universal Monsters if the franchise
continues (Universal owns the rights for Hellboy
2). "We talked briefly about this
because I think it is such a great possibility
for the future, to do that either in the animated
universe or in another universe we create
just for that. I remember seeing the test
footage for the animated Frankenstein they
were making years ago. Black & white...
it is just spine tingling. Your hair stands
on an end because it was of such beauty

are things that live inside the vast emptiness.
Horrible, hungry things.

Another
H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival has come
and gone (I'm already planning for the
next one!), and I've returned with my
sanity mostly intact (I think I said
that last year as well!)...
Highlights
for me included the Dead Birds
screening on the main screen (with director
Alex Turner in attendance), del Toro's
message to Portland, the animated Hellboy
footage/discussion and some incredibly
inventive and original short films (by
some very talented filmmakers). Some
of the standout shorts included Asleep
in the Deep by Paul von Stoetzel,
The Other Gods by Mike Boas,
Binding Silence by Raymond Zablocki,
From Beyond (stop-motion madness
from Michael Granberry) and Christopher
Marston's The Music of Erich Zann.
Oh, and Barbara Crampton was lovely
as well...
|
| Thanks
go to my friends (you know who you are!),
the Lurkers and all the filmmakers who
contributed for making the weekend one
to remember. Special thanks to Andrew
Migliore for bringing all of us misfits
together and making us feel at home. Extra
special thanks to my Uncle Rick for being
brave enough to make the trip with me
4 yrs ago and cool enough to keep going.
Oh, and thanks for the fires. Keep lighting
them and good things might happen... |
See
you next year!

October 10: Dead
Birds sequel announced!
Alex Turner divulged a little info about the
sequel (not prequel as previously announced)
during his Q&A after the HPLFF screening
of Dead Birds. The sequel is titled
The Stone House and will take place
in Afghanistan during the year 2003. Nothing
else was mentioned, but I'm sure it's only
a matter of time before the web with be buzzing
with news...
(Thanks to Alex Turner)
October 10: Guerrilla
Productions, what's next?
Guerrilla
Productions, the fine folks behind Dream-Quest
of Unknown Kadath and Innsmouth Legacy,
have several new Lovecraft related short film
projects in the works including Memory,
The Temple and Shock Troops...
Memory is based on HPL's short prose
poem and will receive a beautiful treatment
in an animated adaptation of a distant time
and place beyond the memory of man...
The live-action short film The Temple
(which has never been adapted before) follows
two descents: a German submarine's descent
to the bottom of the ocean and its sole inhabitant's
descent into madness...or is this the same
journey?
Shock Troops revolves around the time
of his awakening. Beasts are spread across
the land like liquid shadow, and men fall
in their wake. Wars have always be fought
-- won or lost -- against other men. This
time, however, men are not fighting men. They
are fighting a god...
These projects are all in development (I've
read the screenplay for Shock Troops
and it rocks!), so expect a great deal of
news in the coming months!
(Thanks to Edward Martin III)
October 10: Lovecraft's
Pillow director interviewed!
Mark
Steensland, director of Lovecraft's
Pillow (which screened at the HPLFF),
was interviewed last Friday by Dread Central,
and in the interview he discusses where he
got the idea for Lovecraft's Pillow
(see below), why he likes horror, and why
he almost got arrested while making his short
film Sucker...
In
regards to Lovecraft's Pillow
Mark Steensland had this to say, "I'm
a big HPL fan, and so I picked up this book
by a French writer named Houellebecq and found
it had a very interesting intro by Stephen
King in which he recounts once coming up with
an idea for a story while in Providence about
finding Lovecraft's pillow in a pawn shop.
He never actually wrote the story. But he
goes on to say, "If you would like to
try your hand at it, Reader, I bequeath it
to you." So that was the start of the
idea."

October 2: We wish you a scary solstice!
For Immediate Release:
An Even Scarier Solstice is a sequel
to our strangely popular A Very Scary Solstice.
This year we've assembled better musicians,
more singers, and 23 new songs of holiday
horror.
The
CD features a cast of more than 30 professional
singers with each number beautifully arranged
and fully orchestrated by Troy Sterling Nies
(composer for the HPLHS film The Call of
Cthulhu). Styles range from rockabilly
to middle-eastern to grandly gothic and just
plain weird. We've even set Lovecraft's poem,
"A Brumalian Wish" to music
to create (we think) the world's first original
Lovecraftian Christmas carol.
The
sing-along songbook features a handy pronunciation
guide, an introduction by celebrated mythos
author Ramsey Campbell, and the full lyrics
to all of the carols, complete with ample
footnotes teeming with bizarre trivia about
the carols and their underlying mythos connections!

October
1: Lovecraft's Night of Horror call for entries!
For
Immediate Release:
A
Night of Horror Short Film Festival Announces
Call for Submissions and Special H.
P. Lovecraft Category
Sydney, Australia, September 27, 2006 - A
Night of Horror Short Film Festival will announce
its official call for submissions next week.
However, because of the relevancy of the festivals
special H. P. Lovecraft category, early notification
is being given exclusively to Unfilmable.com.
The
festival, which will be held in Sydney, Australia,
from March 23-24, 2007, aims to promote independent
filmmakers working in the horror genre from
both Australia and abroad. It is operated
by the Sydney based film company Lovecraft
21C Productions.
A
Night of Horror aims to screen as many and
varied films as possible. The festivals
organizers believe that the horror genre is
the great equalizer of the filmmaking world,
with some of the genres most memorable
and influential films - from Night of the
Living Dead, through Halloween,
to The Blair Witch Project - being
made on small budgets. In the words of festival
director Lisa Mitchell, "We want to
see and promote films from all budget levels.
We dont care if your budget was $100
or $100,000. As long as youve made a
scary, atmospheric, or shockingly funny horror
short then its in with a chance!"
Films
submitted for consideration must be 30 minutes
or under, but there is no restriction to the
year that they were completed. Those films,
which are selected for screening at the festival,
will compete for several awards and prizes,
in the following three categories:
1:
Short Horror Films
2:
Short Horror Animations
3:
Short Films Inspired by the Writings of H.
P. Lovecraft
Since
he was a teenager, festival co-director and
filmmaker Dean Bertram has been near obsessed
with Lovecrafts writings and the screen
adaptations of his work. Under Bertram's direction,
the festival has incorporated the special
Lovecraft category in an effort to encourage
filmmakers who have been similarly inspired,
and to offer them the opportunity of having
their work screened in Australia.
