October 31: Do you hear Black Wings?

According to David Schmidt's official blog, the rough cut for his Lovecraftian Ghost inspired feature film House of Black Wings is finished! Pick-up shots for the film are currently being shot while post-production continues. Expect many more updates as the film creeps and crawls towards completion!

About the film: After a tragic act of violence cuts short her music career, Kate Stone is returning to a city full of ex-fans and ex-friends. Taking shelter with her last friend, a struggling artist named Robyn Huck, the two women work to restore the aging courtyard apartment building Robyn has inherited. But a terrible secret infests the venerable structure, and soon Kate will be haunted by horrific dreams, sinister apparitions, and the sounds of something moving in the walls. She will be dragged into a confrontation not only with her own dark past, but the unspeakable nightmare that lurks beyond the walls!

October 31: Necronomicon found in Ohio!

Fangoria.com got an exclusive first look at Book of the Dead: Necromancer which is currently in production from Independent filmmaker John Case. Production on the film began in July in Obetz, Ohio (near Columbus) and will continue through the end of the year...

Produced by John's Danger Case Productions and co-director (and special makeup artist) Ken Moss's PondunkvilleFxMonsters, the film features mostly local cast and crew. John told fangoria.com, "We're pretty much shooting on the go. We're being very creative in what we're doing to get the movie made."

The story revolves around an evil sorceress who is raising an army of the undead after being released from an ancient Egyptian puzzlebox (a more detailed synopsis can be found here). "It's a unique take on zombies," John remarks on how his ghouls use an unusual method of transportation, "I figured if they can come up through the ground in a cemetery, why can't they travel that way, too?"

The cast includes Lance Predmore, Shannon O’Keefe, Sal Lizard, Chuck Lamb and model Anastasia Heonis...

The official site (which can be found here) contains cast and crew info, storyboards, the synopsis, fx behind-the-scenes, still shots and more!

October 27: Del Toro speaks of Madness...

It looks like the recent At the Mountains of Madness announcements may have been a little premature. Here's what Guillermo told shocktillyoudrop.com when asked if Madness would be his next project...

"I wish I knew, but Universal has acquired it, which is a great thing because it was in limbo, and I have, together with Michael, self-financed the designs and maquettes and everything, but we'll see. It's R-rated, it's expensive and it doesn't have a happy ending. I think that big-scale horror, big tentpole horror, which you used to have with 'Alien,' 'The Shining,' 'The Exorcist' before everyone thought horror needs to be this or that and pre-conceptualized, I think big tentpole like that should be back at some point in life, so I'm patiently waiting my turn. If I had the freedom to choose and the chance to hold it until its done, I'd do 'Mountains' right away, but what I learned in the horrible years in between 'Cronos' and 'Mimic' and 'Mimic' and 'Devil's Backbone' is that if I did that, it takes me four years to get a movie off the ground, and it never happened in the order..."

October 24: More Evil Dead remake talk...

Here's what Sam Raimi told bloody-disgusting.com about the proposed Evil Dead remake...

"Currently don't have a plan for EVIL DEAD, Ive talked about finding a young filmmaker to re-imagine or remake it at some point. It came out as a 16 mm, it was a blow up to 35 - we only had 60 prints, no one ever saw it in theaters." he goes on to say [asRobert Tapert suggested it to him], "Why don't we make a big screen movie with really great actors, a really great director, real camera and a great soundtrack? A new filmmaker can really do a great job. But since we’ve said it publicly we haven't spent any time looking for people it has all been talk. But wed still like to do that at some point."

October 12: Alternate Cool Air artwork!

Ran across new poster artwork (the image on the left) for Albert Pyun's Cool Air adaptation while looking for information on his latest film, From Beyond! No word yet on whether From Beyond is Lovecraft inspired, but the synopsis is a radical departure from the original story; A group of scientists are gathered to stop Lucifer and his demons from escaping from hell into our world. The only reason I see that there might be a Lovecraft connection (aside from the title) is that both Cool Air and From Beyond were written by frequent Pyun collaborator Cynthia Curnan.

Cool Air stars Morgan Weisser, Crystal Laws Green as Dr. Shockner, Virginia Dare, Norbert Weisser and Virginia Dare Paulin.

About the film: A run of bad luck forces Baxter, a struggling screenwriter, to move into an isolated boarding house. He soon discovers that something is quite wrong at Hayward house, and the source of the evil is seeping down the stairs from the room of the mysterious Dr. Shockner...

October 10: No politics for Dr. West?

Jeffrey Combs spoke with Sci Fi Wire recently about House of Re-Animator, and the bad news is that it's no closer to happening that is was years ago...

"The latest idea is too on the nose, because it's about a vice president who has a heart attack and dies, which is terrible, because he runs the country, and a kind of Karl Rove-ian character brings Herbert to the White House to revive him," Combs tells Sci Fi Wire, "All is well for a little while, and then, of course, havoc has its day. A lot of people they took the idea to didn't want to touch it. And, of course, the real power in it would be to get it out before they are out of power."

Not a fan of blending Re-Animator with political commentary, Combs goes on to say, "I'm as outraged as the next guy about what's going on in the country, but I think we can be less on-the-nose about it and still make the same points. But Stuart is rather tenacious, so he may still get his way someday."

No mention is made about whether Stuart Gordon is still pursuing the Masters of Horror route for the film...

October 3: Dark Paradox premiere announced!

For Immediate Release:

Victoria horror film theatrical premiere for Halloween
"Dark Paradox" explores underground cults in Victoria October 20th

What: To celebrate the Canadian Premiere of Frontline Films' Dark Paradox

When: Saturday, October 20th, 2007
11:30PM Screening

Where: The Roxy Theater
2657 Quadra St.
Victoria, BC

From Victoria filmmaker Brian Clement ("Exhumed", "Meat Market 3") comes the story of a writer's unwitting discovery of the history and secret efforts of a cult in Victoria, Canada that has been engaged in a 60 year effort to open a portal between our world and another, in an attempt to let in a host of vicious interdimensional beings. Once the cult takes hold of the writer he is thrown into a web of horror in which the line between fantasy and reality blurs, the city is enveloped in chaos, and the fate of the world rests in his hands.

The city of Victoria was rumoured in the 1980's to be the second

worldwide "capital of Satanism" after Geneva, Switzerland. "Dark Paradox" explores the idea that this myth was not only partially true, but also partially inaccurate in suggesting the cult activity was "Satanic" when in fact it was based on the worship of ancient extraterrestrial "elder gods" in the vein of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction.

The Victoria premiere will be on Saturday October 20th at the Roxy Theatre at 11:30PM, after the theatre's regular screening schedule. Admission will be $7. The screening will be hosted by director Brian Clement, and DVDs of his other features will be available after the show.

Frontline Films Ltd. was created in 1999, and has produced award-winning features such as "Meat Market" and "Exhumed", with its 2005 feature, "The Dead Inside" playing at film fests in Buenos Aires and Portland, Oregon. The website, www.frontlinefilms.net, features previews of these and other productions.

About the film: Twelve-year-old Robin is in turmoil following the death of his mother when his home is invaded by an amorous intruder. Robin becomes convinced this darkly seductive and mysterious woman, intent on marrying his father, is a witch. His foul mouthed best friend, Larry, always on hand with a scary comic book or urban legend, goads Robin all the way. Once Robin gets hold of the definitive tome on witchcraft, The Malleus Maleficarium, the indelible decision is made: get rid of Maria. But there is more to her, and to Larry, than meets the eye.

Has Robin’s troubled mind created a monster or is his soul truly threatened by a creature so dark and terrible, she will stop at nothing for revenge?

Shot on 35mm with the use of intriguing and innovative visual techniques, 9 Lives of Mara keeps us guessing. A slick and haunting Oedipus story with Lovecraftian influences, Mara has all the smoky flavor of a noir with a splash of blood to quench the thirst of any true horror fan.
