September 24: The Resurrected DVD campaign gets some press...

Last year, MGM did the fans of horror a great service by releasing a special edition of the Dan O'Bannon zombie classic, Return of the Living Dead. One of the reasons we got to see an SE of it was thanks to the tireless efforts of one Michael Allred, an advocator of all things rare and horror who pursued both MGM and O'Bannon himself until he got what he knew the fans wanted.

Damn good work on his part. Since then he's worked on petitions to get Return of the Living Dead II done (that's through Warner Bros, who have little interest in the film in the first place), which is out next year. He's done petitions for Dark Star, the first film from John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon (page is here) and O'Bannon's first directorial effort, The Resurrected (that's here), which he will be meeting with Artisan about soon enough to see if a deal can be made for an SE DVD release, which more importantly will be uncut...

September 22: Now This is Horror in Your House!

Horror TV? Sounds good...

Now how do we convince them that the stars are right for a weekly showcase of Independent Lovecraft cinema?!

~Wes Craven, John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper to join the advisory board of the Horror Channel?! Seriously guys, a horror channel as early as next Halloween could be on the way, read on for the bloody details!

SciFi discovered the following scoop at Variety, "Cable television entrepreneurs Nick Psaltos and Kim Bangash have enlisted directors Wes Craven, John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper to join the advisory board of the Horror Channel, a proposed network that aims to begin operation on Halloween night 2004, Variety reported. Psaltos and Bangash have made a few formal presentations to potential investors and cable operators. Horror Channel has scared up $750,000 so far, and it hopes to harvest $3 million from the venture-capital community within the next four months, the trade paper reported."

"No cable operators have signed up for the Horror Channel yet. Bangash told the trade paper that the network has more than 1,000 U.S. horror movies to draw on for its round-the-clock schedule, as well as another 1,000-plus movies and TV series from abroad." He also noted that, "...if we can raise enough money, we`ll get a good 35mm print of "The Unnamable" that we can send to film festivals all around the world. If everything works out, we`ll get the film scanned in high resolution, put in the visual effects and print it out on 35mm film stock...."

September 20: Bruce Campbell Finally Opens Up

Source: bloody-disgusting.com, The Seattle Times

While talking to The Seattle Times, Bruce Campbell was quoted as saying, "Some executives at New Line are getting (excited) for that idea, which makes a lot of sense," Campbell told the paper. "But Ash has not been contacted to see what his franchise rate is. Funny thing is, it's actually a really cool idea, as long as there could be a satisfying end to that particular movie. There'd be no point for Ash to participate unless he could kick some major franchise ass."

September 19: Lovecraftian video game to get big screen treatment

Konami's dark series of horror games inspire Davis Films to sign on as producer.

An increasing number of game franchises have been slated for motion picture treatment, most recently Majesco's BloodRayne. Now it's Konami's turn. Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo's Silent Hill series is headed to Hollywood, it was announced. The movie's production will be in the hands of Davis Films.

Attached to the project is producer Samuel Hadida, whose credits include True Romance, Spider, and Brotherhood of the Wolf, the latter of which was directed by Christophe Gans. Konami confirmed that Gans would be the director. Gans' other credits include H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon: Book of the Dead and the Japanese anime Crying Freeman.

Konami will be working closely with Davis Films on the film's script, creature and character design, and soundtrack. Konami did not provide details on the cast, filming location, or schedule and did not indicate whether the film would adapt specific episodes in the series or follow an original storyline set in the Silent Hill universe.

The Silent Hill series has sold more than four million copies worldwide on several platforms. Konami says that it is pursuing film production deals for its other franchises, but it did not detail which series. Other highly visible Konami series include Metal Gear Solid, Contra, and Castlevania. (PC/PS2/XBOX)

September 18: Build Your Own Army of the Dead

Source: bloody-disgusting.com, Action-Figure

Action-Figure posted the following scoop about a line of Army of Darkness figures from Palisades that will be 3.75" in 2004, "Each 2-pack has a figure like, say Ash, with a Deadite figure, several accessories and figure bases. When you break it down each fig won't be THAT much more than a figure at that scale, but it will be a little more. Why 3.75? Why not? You can pack a LOT of detail into a 3.75-inch figure...and besides. We want people to be able to build an ARMY of Darkness...and at a six-inch scale that would fill up a room real fast." September 16: The Hound update!

According to Nick Gains, work continues on his animated adaptation of "The Hound". He is currently working on storyboards.

From The Hound:

~When I originally designed the storyboards, there were whole scenes where I couldn't initially visualize anything remotely interesting, so I just drew some basic stuff to illustrate the scene and its elements, but nothing more. Lately, I've been revisiting these "placeholder" scenes, and filling them out. Trouble is, where I might have used 2 or 3 storyboard boxes to describe a tricky scene, the revised version takes several pages! Originally the storyboard weighed in at 35 pages. After revising 4 scenes so far, it's over 43 pages long, and I've still got several more to do.

I've got some more images to put up, some new storyboards, and I'm going to add all the news images to the Images page very soon. Please check back again soon.~

The official website can be found here.

September 13: del Toro on Lovecraft
~ updated ~

Fan question: Secondly - Lovecraft. I've always found it weird how when his name gets mentioned people tend to say 'Oh yeah - tentacles'. Weird simply because most of his stories focused on that whole cold alien horror, which manifested in odd angles, inhuman colours and the like - big octopuses in R'yleth sort of seemed like a distraction from the whole true evil in his universe... So I was wondering how you planned to visualise the shuggoths, etc in the Mountains of Madness...

Guillermo del Toro: First and foremost Lovecraft is about the horror of putting human existance in PERSPECTIVE. How tiny we are. Ants in the Cosmic picnic. Then about the atrocious biology that our heroes face, a crynoid, pisciform, mollusk-like aberration that is augmented by their fear of its intelligence and hatred for our mortal form. I will take at least 3 months with a team of artists before we can lock on a look for the creatures.

Fan question: Are there any of Lovecraft's novels that have particularly shaped your creation of "Hellboy"?

Guillermo del Toro: All "Lovecraftian-ness" in the film is mainly from Mignola's comic. That is peripheral.

Fan question: I was just wondering if you were p*ssed off at the news that the upcoming Aliens Vs. Predator movie is ripping off the premise to ATMOM? I know I am. The ancient city frozen in Antarctica, the aliens that predate humanity, the expedition that leads to a sticky end - it's all there.

Guillermo del Toro: I didn't know. NOW I'm PISSED OFF!!! This might just screw the projrct up.

Fan question: Whilst on the subject, I was wondering who you had in mind for big Ron P to play in the movie? Professor Dyer? He's the only character in the book who has much to do.

Guillermo del Toro: Nope, different character,

Fan question: And what about the ending? PLEASE tell me those three magical words will still apply - Giant Albino Penguins!

Guillermo del Toro: 100% guaranteed. G.A.P.'s will be in the flick. If it gets done.

September 12: Animated Lovecraft feature bows at HPL fest

THE DREAM-QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH, a feature-length animated movie based on one of H.P. Lovecraft’s only two novels, will have its premiere at this year’s H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. The film follows adventurer Randolph Carter as he quests for a city he has glimpsed in a dream, and travels from the Earth to the moon and then a nameless Void, encountering a host of bizarre creatures along the way. The fest takes place in Portland, OR the weekend of October 9-12 at the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy Blvd.), and also includes appearances by Brian Yuzna and Jeffrey Combs (screening BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR and NECRONOMICON) and author/Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, plus showings of THE SHUNNED HOUSE, THE UNNAMEABLE II, over a dozen new short films and more. You can check out DREAM-QUEST’s official website here.

September 9: Cthulhu Rising update!

Frank Bisogno's upcoming Lovecraft adaptation, "Cthulhu Rising" is starting to make waves...

According to Frank, "We have a script and the start of a production team". he added, "We are currently putting together a package for investors".

The feature film is an adaptation of "Call of Cthulhu" with a planned budget of $750,000. It will be shot in High Definition video. They will have some of the best production designers in Providence, plus a digital effects supervisor who has been in the business since "Tron" (he recently worked on "Ice Age") working on it.

They plan to make the most faithful film adaptation of Lovecraft yet, but it will also be an expanded modernized update of HPL's work. The film will be shot on location in Rhode Island using a local crew of filmmakers, actors, and artists, and will use the Providence locations that are so integral to Lovecraft's vivid prose.

As far as Cthulhu goes, they plan to use Lovecraft's technique of giving the viewer (In Lovecraft's case, the reader) just enough information to create a far more horrifying image in their mind that they could ever create visually. What you will see of Cthulhu, will be hopefully be the most unique and terrifying creature ever seen on screen.

Cthulhu Rising was written and produced by Frank Bisogno and Jonathan Thomas, and will be directed by Frank Bisogno.

More on this exciting production as it becomes available!

September 9: Blood Everywhere Productions ~ updated ~

Blood Everywhere Productions (consisting of sisters Anna and Matie Truwe) are the makers of "Six Shorts in Moonlight". With Anna's "writing skills and knowledge of Lovecraft" and Matie's "technological abilities", they set out to make a short film or two based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Their success got them into last years HPLFF (read Aaron Vanek's review here), where they were well received.

And they don't plan on stopping there, with several other Lovecraftian projects waiting in the wings. I have yet to see their work, but will be reviewing their short film soon. Below is some interesting trivia provided by Anna Truwe for those of you who have.

*The blood squirting answering machine from "Call of Cthulhu" resulted in one of the filmmakers losing half the deposit on her apartment.

*"The Descendent" was filmed at the bottom of a busy park bridge while a large public wine-tasting and arts festival went on around it. It owes its barren look to a lot of arm-waving and glaring.

*The actress playing "The Whore" was 19 at the time; she is drinking Diet Shasta poured into an empty Red Hook bottle. It reportedly tasted awful.

*While perfecting the "Blood Everywhere" intro, eight men's shirts from Goodwill were ruined with iodine.

*The same case of Red Hook was used twice as a prop, once as a stool and once as incentive for hesitant actors.

*Mere hours after the finished series was sent away for judging, the best micro-short idea _ever_ was thought of: "The Cruller Out of Space."

September 9: The New Music of Erich Zann

John Strysik sent along news of this updated version of his classic HPL short, "The Music of Erich Zann". The new version of Zann will be screened at next months HPLFF.

THE NEW MUSIC OF ERICH ZANN

Sound is the horror in "The Music of Erich Zann." H. P. Lovecraft wanted to conjure up reverberations of "indefinable dread--the dread of vague wonder and brooding mystery" holding "vibrations suggesting nothing on this globe of earth." Composer André Caporaso tried doing just that with his wonderful string quartet, but the 1980 soundtrack I put together only scratched the sonic surface of HPL's cosmic terror. Part of the problem was the primitive film school sound mix consisting of 5 measly tracks compressed into monaural optical.

Well, sound reproduction has made some giant evolutionary steps in the intervening 23 years. And it helps that André Caporaso has become an Emmy winning Hollywood mixer in the process. Since "Zann" is slated to appear in a new DVD release it was André's idea to give the film a sonic update; or rather, to finally give it the sound design I couldn't. Through the good graces of Rick Larson, owner of Larson Studios in Hollywood, André enlisted the help of top flight Larson people. Major thanks goes out to Tommy Huth, Scott Turner, Chris Unthank, Emily McCullough, and David Dondorf in the creation of this new version. Also appreciated is the contribution of talented double bassist Tony Green. Some of the additions are admittedly minor, like the sound of Blandot's pitcher being put down or the scrapes of a straight razor across the protagonist's jutting jaw. But others are profound, like the new cosmic tones of Zann's weird music and strange harmonies enveloping the audience in 5.1 surround, or the horrible howls added to the colours out of space finale.

All you need is 50 digital tracks, a state of the art studio, 23 years of sound development and the talent of André Caporaso to make old Erich's music of "indefinable dread" much, much more dreadful. After all, didn't someone say the audience is listening?

(Thanks to John Strysik)

September 8: The Unnamable filming continues!

On Saturday they completed two establishing shots set in the 1930's in front of a hospital. On Sunday the crew "went back into 16th century New England". He added that, "Many extras and historical costumes were used, and the make-up FX by Sandra Steineck were amazing".

From Monday the 8th to Wednesday 10th additional dialogue will be shot with the two leads Robert Lyons and Jeff Motherhead (images here). If the weather permits, filming will be completed on Friday.

Images from Saturdays shoot can be found here.

September 5: Music inspired by the writings of H.P.Lovecraft

9 Productions is proud to present the absolutely amazing single from Croatia / Czech's The Old Ones. Taking contemporary metal to the next level is exactly what The Old Ones is doing like no other band right now in the metal scene. Mixing powerful, progressive guitars with beautiful oriental atmosphere to create something truly original. The band is inspired by the writings of H.P.Lovecraft, E.A.Poe and C.G.Jung. "Al - Azif" will appeal to all fans who love unique, oriental metal that combines power, darkness and magic. Simply brilliant!

The tracks that appear on Al-Azif are as follows:

03. Funeral Song
04. To Pan
05. Alone
06. Eulalie

September 4: Portland Hosts Unnamable Horror

Check out Creature-Corner.com's article on the 10th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival!

~PORTLAND HOSTS UNNAMABLE HORROR

9.4.03
By Johnny Butane
Contributing Sources:

Whether you're new to this whole horror culture thing or have been into longer than you can remember, there's one name you're bound to hear again and again when talk of classic horror literature comes up; H.P. Lovecraft.

Every year, some freaks out in Portland, Oregon gather to honor the master of crawling chaos with a film festival complete with submissions from around the world, and this year will see no change. Except, perhaps, in the special guests attending...

On October 9-12, Lovecraftphiles will converge upon the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, and among the celebrities they will oogle will be actor Jeffrey combs (Re-Animator), director Brian Yuzna (Beyond Re-Animator), Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, and actor Jack Donnor. Most of the filmmakers whose films will be scaring the crap out of moviegoers will be attendance as well, and hopefully they'll stick around to help clean up all the crap out of the seats afterwards.

To check out the full schedule of films and guests, be sure to check out the festival's official site right here, and make your plans accordingly. Stuart Gordon, director of From Beyond and Dagon, told me himself that this festival is a must for H.P. fans, and that's not an opinion you mess with.~

September 3: The Unnameable get a new home

The Australian experimental band, The Unnameable have a new website! The Unnameable (Clinton Green & Andrew McIntosh) are responsible for the great Lovecraftian soundscape, But of that, I will not speak...

Another project they are associated with is the soundtrack for my forthcoming (I promise, it's coming!) Lovecraftian film project, Halfway House. The music they've created (from my finished script) will really push my production to the next level.

They are now hard at work on the soundtrack to Sascha Renninger's adaptation of "The Unnamable"!
