September 27, 2004 Portland's Lurker Films announces that this weekend (October 1-3, 2004), the 11th annual H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival will awaken at the Hollywood Theater in Portland, Oregon, releasing terror upon the Earth in a variety of forms. Some of the forms include * Five feature films: * Many short films! The festival, a celebration of cinema based on, inspired by, or otherwise loosely affiliated with seminal Gothic horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, draws hundreds of attendees from as far away as Portland, ME; Los Angeles, CA; and Canada. Lurker Films, Inc. (formerly Beyond Books) was founded in 1995 by Andrew Migliore to munch popcorn where cultists fear to tread, producing DVDs, Videos, and Audio CDs of the famous, infamous and just plain obscure films and television shows that have been directly or indirectly inspired by Lovecraft's work. For more information,

Migliore) Flesh of my Flesh, Edward Martin III's feature length follow-up to Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath is quickly shaping up to be a very interesting project... The film recently moved into pre-production, and the official website contains some interesting news, merchandise, a wanna help? section and a certain Dr. West's personal diary (among other things). Click here for the latest goings on, or to see if you might be able to help out... (Thanks to Edward Martin III) September 27: Dan OBannon's new project According to fangoria.com, Variety reports that Dan OBannon has just signed with new management (at ICM) and will work in the video game realm for the first time. No specific projects have been announced... OBannon is the co-creator of Alien and director of Return of the Living Dead and The Resurrected. Look for an interview with OBannon in FANGORIA #239 (on sale December 7). (Thanks to http://fangoria.com/) September 27: More Ash than you can shake a stick at! Creature-corner.com has the latest on the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash and Evil Dead 4 projects... A unnamed source has reported that, "he/she just recently wrapped on a project with Robert Englund and heard some big news while on the set." Heres the scoop: "Next up Englund's going to be doing double-duty on a new horror pic and a new mini-series reincarnation of "V", the old series he use to appear in. He seems genuinely excited about it, and I believe they're all rooting that it gets the greenlight to be a later series. Then....it's Freddy vs.Jason 2. They have the script, and yep, it does include the Ash character from Evil Dead. The same guy, Bruce Campbell, is doing the part. It's been a money situation apparently because one company owns one character whilst another owns the Freddy and Jason characters. everyone wants their piece of the pie apparently, including the actors of course. They've all got their way though apparently and it'll be shot back to back with a new "Evil Dead" movie with Campbell, all part of the deal apparently, there's talk that this might be released first to reinvigorate fans of that series and have the films link in some respect. exciting stuff." (Thanks to http://creature-corner.com/) Please note: This is not a product endorsement... Full Moon Entertainment president, Charles Band hosts the newly released Cinemaker. The six DVD set is a comprehensive kit filled with fun, informative and entertaining secrets of the trade (stuff they'll never tell you in film school). The programs feature expert advice and straightforward techniques on how to pull it off on time and within your budget. Featuring exclusive interviews with: Roger Corman, John Carpenter, Llyod Kaufman, William Lustig, Stuart (Re-Animator) Gordon, Stan Lee (as interviewed by William Shatner), Jack Kirby, Sandy King Carpenter, Fred Olen Ray, David Allen, Courtney (Lurking Fear) Joyner and many many more... Contents are as follows: DVD 01 - Conception and
Pre-Production - Planning it! PLUS Cost for the set is $99.95 (plus shipping and handling). For further info, click here. (Thanks to http://www.cinemaker.net) September 26: Re-Animator re-release available now! Elite's re-release of the Millennium Edition Re-Animator DVD came out on September 14. In other DVD news, Ivan Zuccon's Unknown Beyond is scheduled for release on October 12th (from LEO Films). (Thanks to Entertainment
Weekly and Sean Brock) Andrew Migliore informed me that two short films from the (web)pages of Unfilmable.com have been added to the HPLFF 2004 schedule. They are Angry and Moist: An Undead Chronicle and Enter the Dagon! Unfortunately, Sundays 'The Unfilmable Shorts Block (A filmmaker's lesson book)' has been removed, but Andrew says it will return next year. For those of you interested in what happened to Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, click here... (Thanks to Andrew Migliore) September 25: Hellboy 2 pushed back? According to Bloody-disgusting.com, Selma Blair told SCI FI Wire that shooting for Hellboy 2 will be delayed up to a year and a half while Guillermo del Toro works on another project (after his current one, Pans Labyrinth). She went on to say that, "I talked to Guillermo last week when I was in Europe with him. He's sworn me to secrecy, but it's so good, and I'm so excited." I don't believe this mystery project is his adaptation of "At the Mountains of Madness" since del Toro has already stated that it will take over a year for location scouting alone. That would push Hellboy 2 back well beyond the one and a half year mark... (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/) More as it becomes available! (Thanks to David Schmidt) The schedule for next months H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival has been announced. A few films have been added to the ones I've been listing, and the HPLFF website confirms that the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets show has been canceled (to be replaced by a unnamed late night screening). Sunday afternoon boasts an intriguingly titled screening called 'The Unfilmable Shorts Block (A filmmaker's lesson book)'! What is contains is a mystery... Check out the full schedule here! (Thanks to http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/) September 23: The Halfway House on the big screen BV Entertainment is pleased to announce that The Halfway House has been accepted for screening at the Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Festival at the Arclight in Los Angeles. Welcome to the irregular newsletter from Guerrilla Productions. "Innsmouth Legacy" Thank you to everybody who helped put this movie together. I plan to distribute comp copies to you as soon as I'm done making them -- you'll like these DVDs -- lots of extras! Speaking of extras, I need someone who can do good translation from English to French and Polish. It's pretty simple text and I can send you a copy of the DVD when I'm done with it in exchange. I wouldn't mind someone doing a Klingon translation, either. That would be cool. "The Dream-Quest
of Unknown Kadath" "Flesh of my
Flesh" "ReCreation" "A Perfect Mate" "Shadowdog" Okay, enough news, I gotta get back to doing Unspeakable Things. Have fun, dream vividly, and wake up wondering if you're still asleep! Cheers, Edward (Thanks to Edward Martin

They include Kirk Henderson's "The Visage" (based on the gothic short story "Viy" by Russian author Nikolai Gogol), Jeff Hoffman's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and an updated version of last years "Beauty in the Dark" by Kevin S. Quinn. Watch this space for more! (Thanks to http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/) Thomas J Gleason (Enter the Dagon) sent along these (click here) behind the scenes images from a Lovecraft themed music video he is currently working on for the UK band, Killing Miranda. The video is for the song "Disposiable", which the band chose over their own song entitled "Enter the Dagon". The shoot is currently on hold while Tom waits for band footage to be sent... The video centers around a fictional recording company called "Whately Bros. Records" and their insidious plan for world domination through vapid pop music! (Thanks to Thomas J Gleason) The Temple of Dagon and Unfilmable.com have teamed up to bring you the official forum for Unfilmable.com! Have a favorite film you'd like to discuss. Looking for a rare title to add to your collection. Maybe your working on your own Lovecraft inspired film, and need some help... Want to share your thoughts about Unfilmable.com. What you would like to see more of (or less). Do you have a film you'd like me to mention or a review you'd like to share? If so, head over to the forum and sign up! You can discuss all films Lovecraftian by clicking here! (Thanks to Aleister) The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival 2005 is going to start accepting submissions almost immediately after the 2004 film festival (you're going, right? Of course you are! See you there!). We're going to put together some kind of solicitations poster for this, paper and digital, and upload it here. Please when we do so, feel free to print it out and hang copies wherever you like. I recommend any place where filmmakers, goth folks, literary folks, and crazy-ass creatives hang out. Coffee shops, book shops, alternative record stores, everywhere. Until then, just shake down all the filmmakers you know, get those features finally edited, get those shorts shot and edited, get some movies made and sent in. With nearly a year advance notice, people ought to be able to come up with lots and lots of Lovecraft-based and Lovecrat-inspired movies for the 2005 Festival! Overwhelm us with submissions. They include a trailer for Craig Macneill's "Late Bloomer" (one of the best Lovecraft shorts I've ever seen!), Edward (Dream-Quest) Martin's "Innsmouth Legacy", Jon Cazares and Brian Wood's "Why Vote for the Lesser Evil?" (see my news article on September 16th), a trailer for "Experiment 17" (discovered by Christian Matzke) and Rick Tillman's "The Summoning" (another great offering from the director of Pickman's Model)! Unfortunately I have just found out that The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets will not be playing the fest. Toren Atkinson announced (on their official Yahoo email group) that their bass player had to cancel... More updates to come! (Thanks to Toren Atkinson and http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/) September 17: The Thing returns to the Big Screen John Carpenter's The Thing will be making an appearance on the big screen at the upcoming Horror Fest 2004 (October 8th at the Bijou Community Theater in Worcester, MA). As she becomes more and more obsessed with his dark universe, she starts to experience dark visions and spiral into madness... Further information is available on the Sword & Cloak blog. (Thanks to David Schmidt) September 14: H.P. Lovecraft figures are coming! According to Dread Central, SOTA Toys president Jerry Macaluso discussed [in a figures.com interview] a line of toys based on creatures from H.P. Lovecraft stories. In the interview, he admitted that he brought the Cthulhu prototype [see news: July 26] with them to San Diego Comic Con "because we had a case to fill," Macaluso says there will be two more creatures that have not yet been determined in the first line. Some possible choices are one of the "Deep Ones" or possibly the title character from the Lovecraft story "Pickman's Model". "Randy Queen, who created 'Darkchylde,' a really, really popular comic for (the publisher) Image in the '90s, does all our designs." Jerry said "We've got designs of practically everything now. It's just a matter of sitting down and committing ourselves to two more." He also hinted that there could be a figure of Lovecraft himself, although the line isn't due until Halloween of 2005... Check out the rest of the interview here (including more images of the Cthulhu prototype). (Thanks to http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/) September 14: Lemora DVD review Click here
to read the horrorchannel.com review of the recently released Lemora:
A Child's Tale of the Supernatural DVD... Guests for next months H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival include author and scholar S.T. Joshi, artist Lee Moyer and musical guests Darkest of the Hillside Thickets (Saturday night). Look for more exciting announcements soon! (Thanks to http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/) Saturday, October 16th at Borderlands Books in San Francisco (8 PM), The Hermetic Order of Arcana Productions will premiere their original radio play, Shadow Over Innsmouth, based on the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. The Hermetic Order of Arcana proudly launch their first journey into Golden Age of Radio stylized "Corridors of Evil", with a spoken word adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Shadow Over Innsmouth, a frightening and occasionally humorous tribute to horror's master in the style of noir dramas of 1940's radio programs. "Corridors of Evil" is a descent into the realms of supernatural and noirish suspense by great writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber, August Derleth, Carl Jacobi, and a slew of others representing the front line of horror and the unknown; this great tradition of literature, fused together with the innovative creativity of pre-television radio drama, is the impetus that inspires co-producers RW Hessler and Thomas Lych in their adaptation of Lovecraft's Shadow Over Innsmouth, an eerie tale of the conquest of a small Massachusetts fishing village by undersea invaders. Shadow Over Innsmouth is also one of Lovecraft's longer works which explores the now-famous Cthulhu mythos, a universe which continues to be defined and shaded by literally hundreds of authors of horror and suspense today. Hermetic Order of Arcana promise a suspenseful rendering of an old-time radio production team presenting a "live broadcast" of their adaptation of Lovecraft's classic that predates yet mirrors the paranoia of domestic American relations during the Cold War. With a cast of nine readers, an original score by seasoned Cincinnati composer Christopher Comer, as well as sound effects design by J.J. Bergovoy, Shadow Over Innsmouth is a loving homage to radio drama as a viable art medium and the spirit of horror's most significant high priest since Edgar Allen Poe. (Thanks to Gavin Smith) September 8: Hooper talks Mortuary During an interview with director Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs), Tobe Hooper discussed (among other things) his upcoming horror film Mortuary... "It's about this beat up old mortuary that gets moved into by a guy going through a midlife crisis who goes into a new business, kind of on a lark, a place that is so f***** up and run down that he doesn't know what he's doing. Once he gets there, he hopes hell be able to get some business from the mental institution and the old folks home. And he certainly does. But it's very weird and very scary and not quite what you think. It's almost as if Larry Clark was doing a horror film. Kind of like Bully. Except there will be redeeming characters." The film will be shot on location in a [supposedly] haunted building built in the 1800's that was found by their location scout... For the rest of the interview, click here. (Thanks to http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/) September 8: Darabont to direct The Thing? According to Variety, Frank (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) Darabont is now aboard the Sci-Fi channels 4 hour remake of The Thing. Campbell Jr.'s short story, "Who Goes There?". It was previously adapted by Christian Nyby (with Howard Hawks), John Carpenter and Tony Brezezinski (1956). (Thanks to Lisa) "JEREMIAH the series is a Platinum Studios comic-book-to-film adaptation. The adaptation of JEREMIAH is based on the award-winning European graphic novel series by Belgian author Hermann Huppen. Set in the future, the series focuses on Jeremiah (Luke Perry) who must navigate his way through a world populated by the survivors of a deadly epidemic that spared only those who had not yet reached puberty. Now those same survivors must find their way in a decadent civilization and attempt to create a new world order of hope. Jeremiah, a loner by nature, is joined by the naïve yet colorful Kurdy (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) on a quest to find the mysterious "Valhalla Sector". Together they set out on a journey during which they discover rival social factions at war and young people who must make decisions without wisdom from those who lived before them." J. Michael Straczynski developed the series for TV and was executive producer for the first 3 (actually 2) seasons. Showtime aired the first 2 episodes tonight (September 3rd) of the 3rd season (actually the 2nd half of the 2nd season) and in both episodes a town named "Innsmouth" (which seem NOT to be by the ocean) was mentioned and shown. Straczynski was also the creator and writer of many episodes of BABYLON 5, where he dropped in Mythos' names and also wrote and produced the Lovecraftian-themed B5 movie THIRDSPACE. (Thanks to Franklin Hummel) Legrasse & Co. in the swamp © HP Lovecraft Historical Society The HP Lovecraft Historical Society have updated their Call of Cthulhu filmpage with some exclusive images and desktop pictures! They are still looking for translators if your interested in helping out... (Thanks to Sean Branney) September 3: At Mountains of Madness and Hellboy news! Guillermo del Toro recently spoke with empire online, and had this to say about At the Mountains of Madness! "I am hopefully doing a version of At The Mountains Of Madness. My dream for that movie would be to band together with people like Gahan Wilson, Corbin, Geiger, Moebius and the lot and conceptualize a truly cosmic horror movie. May I live long enough to see it!" He also had this to say about Hellboy 2 and a possible Hellboy trilogy: "I would love to make Hellboy into a trilogy. Creatively, Mike Mignola and I know that we want to at least do that. Economically, it's the studio's decision" says Del Toro. "We tried to do an entire sequel based on the Roger [a homunculus created by a scientist to bring about the end of the world] origin story, and found it to be actually very similar to what Hellboy is in the first movie - a conflicted monster. So the sequel will have another BPRD member, Johan the Ectoplasmic Agent". (Thanks to Thom Maurer) September 3: Jason talks, twice! Ken Kirzinger, who played Jason in Freddy vs. Jason, spoke recently about the possibilities of a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. "New Line is excited; they think that it'll be great to have someone [Ash] who can banter with Freddy, while I stand there and just think, 'Will you two just shut up while I kill you??!!'" If this film happens, it could mean even further adventures for Evil Dead's hero. An early rumour involved the possibility that New Line would finance a 4th Evil Dead film if Ash would take part in the Freddy vs. Jason franchise. Meanwhile, Kane Hodder has been talking Freddy vs. Jason as well. Only he isn't so enthusiastic since he was overlooked for the role of Jason in favor of Mr. Kirzinger. At the recent Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear, he had this to say: "Jason meets Ass, I mean, Ash. I guess they can try it," says the former Voorhees. "I haven't decided if I think that'd be a good idea or not. Just like I never was sure if Jason in space was a good idea. I don't know, [Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash] would be interesting on a certain level. Ash is more human, so I don't know how the battle would go." You can read both articles here and here. (Thanks to http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/ and http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/index.php) September 3: The Dark bypasses theaters... According to fangoria.com, Dimension has decided to send Jaume Balagueró's Darkness direct to video. The film, described as very Lovecraftian by viewers, was originally to receive a theatrical run on June 18. The film has since been re-titled The Dark, and will play at LA's Screamfest in October under that title. No release date [for the video] has been given...
