September 15: Cool Air confusion...

It seems that I recently confused Albert Pyun's upcoming film, called Infection, with his adaptation of Cool Air (see: August 27). The confusion came about in part because The Internet Movie Database has listed the same cast/crew and screenwriter for Infection as fangoria.com gives for Cool Air...

Albert Pyun's Filmwerks website doesn't offer much in the way of additional information, but does host a trailer for Infection and the above poster for Cool Air. One of the press links description of the film confirmed that they are separate projects...

September 14: Cthulhu casting call this Saturday!

For Immediate Release:

New horror film to bring name cast & Sundance producers to Seattle, Astoria
Seattle Poet/Journalist Grant Cogswell Turns Lovecraft Story Into Contemporary Statement

Seattle, WA, September 12th -- 'Cthulhu', a feature film being shot in Seattle, WA and Astoria, OR beginning on the 27th of September, is coming to Astoria this Saturday to hold an open casting call. Auditions will be held at the P.A.C. (Performing Arts Center) on Franklin and begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday the 17th, and end at 6:00 pm. Casting is for leads, featured extras, supporting characters, and extras. They plan to use a mix of talent and crew, both local and out of town, from all over the Pacific Northwest.

"Cthulhu" is based on the Lovecraft short story, "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". The cast stars Scott Green, co-star of Gus Van Sant's "Last Days" and Jennifer Westfeldt ("Kissing Jessica Stein"). The film is being produced by two recent Sundance alumni, Jeffrey Brown ('Police Beat', 2005) and Anne Rosellini ('Down to the Bone', 2004). Shooting will commence on September 27th and go until the last week of October with primary locations in Seattle, WA and Astoria, OR.

The film will be shot in the style of atmospheric Japanese neo-horror (a la "Cure") with elements of the psychological thriller ("Rosemary's Baby") and apocalyptic horror ("28 Days Later"). The story tells of a man drawn by his mother's death back to his estranged family in the small town where he grew up. Reacquainted with his closest childhood friend he discovers his father's ministry of a New Age church is connected to old massacres and frightening legends.

"Cthulhu is a universal story addressing the current dire political and ecological situation," says writer Grant Cogswell. "The threat of terrorism and the security state, and of global warming, and stands as a warning that our dearest habits endanger our civilization." Director Daniel Gildark adds, "It's a coming-home-again tale about the power of heredity-- what we can escape from and what we cannot."

Director Gildark has made several acclaimed local shorts in Portland and created the memorable, surreal imagery used for MTV's '120 Minutes'; screenwriter Grant Cogswell is a local poet, journalist and environmental activist and is a Richard Hugo House Belltown Fellow; cinematographer Sean Kirby won the Golden Space Needle Award at SIFF in 2005 for his work on 'Police Beat' and 'The Gits'.

The film will feature a classic score by Portland horror film scholar Willy Greer and a soundtrack by Modest Mouse, Blood Brothers, Gram Parsons, Joy Division.

September 10: Re-Animator sequel(s) update!

Dread Central looked into the recent rumor that 3 new Re-Animator films are in the works, and came up with the following:

"Well, there's no "signing" going on right now," Combs tells Dread Central, "but we are certainly exploring the possibilities. Brian's idea is to do three Re-Animators, yes, three, back to back. We're developing some good story lines, but we’re just in the gestation period on this...I told Brian I didn't want to wait another 20 years to do another one. I don't want Herbert to be a geriatric. Stuart [Gordon] could be involved on one of them. Bruce Abbott as well."

September 10: Here comes The Fog (again)...

Here's a round-up of news on The Fog...

~ One of the ghosts from Columbia’s upcoming remake of The Fog makes an appearance on the cover of Fangoria #247 (on sale September 20). The magazine contains an exclusive set visit (including interviews with director Rupert Wainwright, the cast and John Carpenter).

~ John Carpenter gave fango the scoop on his version of the Fog remake (if it had been directed by him), "I'd have put it in a big city," Carpenter reveals, "and make it an urban film. I had an idea once I could never figure out. I'd make [the ghosts] the innocent dead, and the people who were killed unfairly would come back and seek a little payback. There'd be a lot of stuff going on in the ghettos. But that would be a whole different movie, and it would also be much more serious."

~ Composer Graeme Revell will be scoring the film...

~ Sony Pictures has fully launched their official Fog website. The website has downloads, new photos and more...

September 10: Kammaren update!

Here's the latest on Big Belly Films follow-up to "March the 13th, 1941". The project, titled Kammaren (The Chamber), involves three friends, Adam, Björn and Jens, who take a trip to an old house in the countryside. For many years, the house (called The Chamber), had a strange houseguest. That man, Tore, was Adams grandmother's brother and he knew something wasn't right with the place. Tore has recently passed away and with him the secret of the houses evil past. Slowly Adam starts to realize something's wrong, but is it to late?

The film is based on H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Statement of Randolph Carter", and also inspired by the world of the role playing game "Chtulhu Mythos"...

Robert P. Olsson will star, as well as, produce and direct. Production will also be handled by Ulf Norström, Roland Olsson and Ulla Olsson. The story and screenplay were written by Björn-Erik Karlsson and Robert P. Olsson, and Kristoffer Andrén will handle the Cinematography. The tentative release date is Autumn 2006...

September 10: Necronomicon de los Templarios mentioned in Rue Morgue

According to Christopher K. Philippo, the September issue of Rue Morgue (Issue 49) has the text of an old Amando de Ossorio (the Blind Dead films) interview in which he mentions the "fifth chapter about the Templars" and "the project that never was done, Valdemar Danis' project and the Werewolf With the Templars".

Amando said, "[Producer Pornache] wanted to do the script and develop his own ideas, but I had finished already, using the [sacred medicine] necronomium (spelling?) and he wanted to take that out. I wanted the character of the werewolf to not want to be a werewolf, and there is a doctor that offers a cure if he could only find the necronomium. So he goes to seek the necronomium and it is hidden in the Templars' basilica."

Portions of the interview will be included in the forthcoming Blind Dead box set...
