27: Lovecraft's Night of Horror call for entries!
For
Immediate Release:
A
Night of Horror Short Film Festival Announces
Call for Submissions and Special H.
P. Lovecraft Category
Sydney, Australia, September 27, 2006 - A
Night of Horror Short Film Festival will announce
its official call for submissions next week.
However, because of the relevancy of the festivals
special H. P. Lovecraft category, early notification
is being given exclusively to Unfilmable.com.
The
festival, which will be held in Sydney, Australia,
from March 23-24, 2007, aims to promote independent
filmmakers working in the horror genre from
both Australia and abroad. It is operated
by the Sydney based film company Lovecraft
21C Productions.
A
Night of Horror aims to screen as many and
varied films as possible. The festivals
organizers believe that the horror genre is
the great equalizer of the filmmaking world,
with some of the genres most memorable
and influential films - from Night of the
Living Dead, through Halloween,
to The Blair Witch Project - being
made on small budgets. In the words of festival
director Lisa Mitchell, "We want to
see and promote films from all budget levels.
We dont care if your budget was $100
or $100,000. As long as youve made a
scary, atmospheric, or shockingly funny horror
short then its in with a chance!"
Films
submitted for consideration must be 30 minutes
or under, but there is no restriction to the
year that they were completed. Those films,
which are selected for screening at the festival,
will compete for several awards and prizes,
in the following three categories:
1:
Short Horror Films
2:
Short Horror Animations
3:
Short Films Inspired by the Writings of H.
P. Lovecraft
Since
he was a teenager, festival co-director and
filmmaker Dean Bertram has been near obsessed
with Lovecrafts writings and the screen
adaptations of his work. Under Bertram's direction,
the festival has incorporated the special
Lovecraft category in an effort to encourage
filmmakers who have been similarly inspired,
and to offer them the opportunity of having
their work screened in Australia.

Festival are available at: www.anightofhorror.com

September 25: Films, comics and all things
Re-Animator!
|
|
Dread
Central caught up with producer/director
Brian Yuzna, and he spoke of the future
exploits of Herbert West (specifically
House of Re-Animator)...
"We
are working on getting the script to
House of Re-Animator. Halcyon is organizing
the financing and presales,"
he told them. He went on to say, "The
idea for West in the White House began
as the concept for the first sequel,
Bride of Re-Animator. It took place
during the Reagan years and picked up
directly where the first movie left
off and include a re-animated Meg. In
the past few years Stuart Gordon has
gotten very enthusiastic about the House
idea, and he and Dennis Paoli came up
with a completely different version,
which is funny and outrageous as well
as being pretty gory."
|
| One
thing missing from Beyond Re-Animator
was Bruce Abbott's portrayal of West's
sidekick, Dan Cain. Yuzna explains that,
"House incorporates what to me
is the most important element of a further
Re-Animator story, which is resolving
the conflict between Dan Cain and Herbert
West. Bruce Abbott has been very supportive,
and I think he might enjoy having Cain
go mano-a-mano with West." |
Also
in the works is a new comic book adaptation
of Re-Animator courtesy of Barry
Keating. If the comic does well, Yuzna plans
to use future issues to fill in the gaps in
the Re-Animator world.
An
official Re-Animator website
is in the works that will include comic book
art and many other things yet to be announced.

talk with Brian Yuzna for more!

September 23: Freddy vs. Jason vs.
Ash not dead?
Bloody-disgusting.com
reports that director Ronny Yu has once again
started the Freddy vs. Jason vs.
Ash rumors with the following comment,
"Yeah, they've been talking about
it [a sequel to "Freddy vs.
Jason"], and they even talk about
bringing Ash [from Sam Raimi's "Evil
Dead" movies] into the equation,
and I thought it's terrific. It's almost like
an updated version of "The Good,
The Bad and the Ugly." If they
really want to do it and they want me to do
it, I'd love to do it. It would be a lot of
fun."

in the Deep is an experimental/narrative
film adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story.
In the vein of David Lynch and Maya Deren,
the film follows a punk girl, Alyce, down
the rabbit hole into a strange land. She is
first tormented by a group of upper-classs
dinner-goers but soon finds a strange building
with even stranger inhabitants. Her new odd
neighbors are topped by a reclusive violin
player, Zahn, who mesmerizes all with his
playing. Alyce eventually meets and befriends
the black, older violin player to find out
too late that he plays for all of the lost
children in the world. The next time they
meet, Zahn is nothing more than a living-dead
musician and Alyce runs from the strange land
never to find it again.

21: He just wants your skin!
 |
A
while back I covered an adaptation of
Lovecraft's Cool Air (titled
Cooler Air) that
I was unable to find much info on. Well
it seems that the film has since been
renamed Chill, and according
to the official
site, the film will be released
soon (although not soon enough to screen
at this years HPLFF). Very little information
is available, but the site does contain
a trailer, synopsis (see below) and
cast list...
Production company Rojak Films site,
lists Serge Rodnunsky as the writer
and director and contains more detailed
cast and crew info here...
About the film: In this horror retro
chiller, Sam (Thomas Calabro, 'Melrose
Place'), an aspiring writer, gets
a job as a clerk in a Los Angeles inner
city grocery mart owned by a mysterious
Dr. Munoz (Shaun Kurtz), a former research
scientist who claims to have a rare
skin condition that confines
him to live in sub-freezing refrigeration.
|
| Subsequently,
Sam befriends an attractive neighborhood
boutique owner named Maria (Ashley Laurence,
'Hellraiser') and becomes unwittingly
entwined in a threatening love triangle
when Maria reveals that ex-boyfriend Detective
Defazio (James Russo, 'Donnie Brasco'),
who is investigating the recent disappearance
of two local prostitutes, is stalking
her. |
|
But, it's what Sam doesn't know that
might prove more fatal. His newfound
employment is just a cover for a darker,
more disturbing secret. Dr. Munoz is
secretly performing ghastly regenerative
tissue experiments on living human flesh,
savagely skinning his chained victims
and forcing them to fight for their
lives in frigid temperatures as they
slowly freeze to death. Sam is horrified
to learn that Munoz died some time ago,
but has kept himself alive through occult
measures and the flesh harvested from
his captives.
In
the aftermath of Defazio's murder, Sam
must decide whether he will die or join
Munoz's unholy ranks. Can he escape
a grim fate before the next fall of
Munoz's unyielding and merciless blade?
Inspired
by H.P. Lovecraft's macabre spine tingling
chiller, 'Cool Air'.

Combs gave the following House of Re-Animator
update at the Toronto Festival of Fear...
"It
got all frothy about eight months ago,"
Combs told the Toronto crowd. "Brian
Yuzna tried to get distributors interested
in House of Re-Animator, which
takes place at the White House. The Vice President
is dead, but he cant be because the
President is a clueless f*ck, so they bring
in Herbert West. Brian put together an audio-visual
piece with William H. Macy playing the President
and took that to Cannes. Everyone thought
it was great, and so at that point Brian needed
to get a script, which means that he has to
pay Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli to write
one, and so thats the last I heard of
that. This was four or five months ago. I
wouldnt say its dead though."

Several other Thing projects have been

September 1: Lovecraft
production needs artist!
Posting this for a friend...
I am looking for an artist to pencil a script
for a movie.
The
idea is to release the graphic novel and at
the same time use it as a complete script
for shopping the film around.
What
I am looking for is less of a perfectionist
and more of someone who will
A)
Be willing to work on a timely basis on a
graphic novel that will range between 60 to
100 illustrated pages.
2)
Work for a percentage of profit from the sales
of the graphic novel AND...
III)
also a percentage of the profits from all
things involving the movie.
I
very much believe that your creative work
should pay off not once but over the long
run.
The
movie is a mixture between Lovecraft and Lynch
with a hint of the film the Begotten.
If
interested, please feel free to get in contact
with me. I am looking for someone soon. There
are several interested parties currently in
talks with and would like to have something
finished to show them in the next few months.
Contact information can be found here...
