~ October 18, Aaron Vanek's epic HPLFF write-up is in, and here's
what he had to say about Read Me A Story...
Read Me a Story (directed by Craig Mullins and Bret Mix): I
had a hand in the making of this one (as did many other Lurkers),
so I am biased. It's Craig's (of unfilmmable.com,
one place where you are probably reading this right now) first attempt
at making the movies he loves so much. As a first effort, it travels
pretty high. A mother reads a bedtime story from the Necronomicon
to her little urchin
which is perfect for "it". Craig
kept the film short and tight, with just enough information to keep
the viewer in suspense. The lead actress of the film got a shout out
from Patti Smith for her wonderfully droll performance as the mother.
A great, simple ending leaves chills. Nitpicking would mention the
blue light (I personally don't like blue light to represent moonlight),
and a remix for the soundtrack. But there are more strengths than
flaws, and Craig's devotion is plain to see. I can't wait to see what
he comes up with next!
~ October 15, Last weekends H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival premier went
well, and several reviews have filtered in. Here's what people are
saying about Read Me A Story...
Read Me a Story (directed by Bret Mix & Craig Mullins)
- This was one I was most looking forward to. Craig Mullins is a friend
of mine who's been reviewing Lovecraftian cinema for years (he runs
Unfilmable.com), so I was eager to see if he could "walk the
walk" the way he "talked the talk." Not only does he
walk, but he jogs along at a brisk pace. "With reading comes
dire consequences," Lovecraft said, so when a child asks his
mother to read him a story, you can bet something not-so-bedtime-story-like
might just happen (I'll review this in more detail in the future).
- Derek M. Koch
Read Me a Story: A short film involved a woman, her child, a creepy
guy and a book. Cute but no real surprises. The shot of the night
sky is effective though.
- spauldingae
Read Me A Story: One of the tricks to a film short is that
of back story. Too much, and the audience gets bored, expecting something
that was going right to the meat; not enough, and an audience might
feel cheated. 'Read Me A Story' could have used a little more
back story, just to establish who and what we were looking at. This
bugged me, but I also recognized that adding to what was there would
have made the film drag. The emphasis was more on the shock of what
happens, and that was delivered quite nicely without being obvious.
The effects were well-rendered and the camera work and lighting brought
the climax to full effect. Overall, a nicely-done bit of film.
- Mad Professor

MiskatoniCON
and Blue November

Read Me A Story's screening at the H.P.
Lovecraft Film Festival is now less than a week away!
~
September 23, Read Me A Story is finished! Seven months after
production began, post-production has ended. A DVD has been sent to
the H.P.
Lovecraft Film Festival, and the film will premier next month.
As you can see, I've also redesigned the website and added several
new images here...
More to come!
~ July 25, Spent about 15 hrs working on the final edit and the few
remaining fx shots. Rick Tillman (The Summoning) and Ray Zoblocki
(Strange Aeons: The Awakening) have also provided some
vital digital shots to fill out the film. All that remains is color
correction and the final audio mix. Then it's off to the H.P.
Lovecraft Film Festival!
~ July 2, Made a significant amount of progress last night, but there's
much more to do. We still have to color correct half of the film,
fill in the audio, create the score, finish several fx shots and Photoshop
out a few mistakes...
~ June 17, More post-production. We still seem to be a long ways off...
~ June 12, Worked on post until 3 am. Worked on timing out the opening
credits, tightened up the first minute and a half, color corrected
several scenes from the second location and found three very glaring
mistakes that will have to be Photoshoped out...
~ June 8, Lots of news this time around...
First off, the teaser trailer made it's appearance at Darrick Dishaw's
Cthulhu
One convention! Unfortunately, it still hasn't been formatted
properly for it's web debut. Secondly, the first rough cut of the
film (clocking in at around 6 minutes) is finished. Lead actress Rebekah
Morrison, the guys from Maelstrom
Productions and Rick Tillman from dark
whisper films previewed the film over the Memorial Day weekend,
and positive comments/suggestions were given by all. Thirdly, the
film has already been accepted by the MiskatoniCON,
and will screen the weekend of November 4-6 in Stockholm, Sweden!
The film will also be submitted to the H.P.
Lovecraft film festival and Blue
November MicroFilmFest
(among others). More updates to come...
~ April 27, The teaser trailer is currently en-route to Darrick Dishaw
and the Cthulhu One convention, and will make it's premiere this coming
weekend. Look for it online in the next week or so...
~ April 24, Sorry for the lack of updates, but things have been busy
on this end. Anyway, editing is currently underway, and a teaser trailer
(about 1 minute in length) has been completed. The trailer should
be online in a week or so...
It is also being submitted to Darrick Dishaw's Cthulhu
One Convention. The convention takes place in Madison Wisconsin
this coming weekend...
The production diary is still forthcoming...
~ March 19, Updated the cast and crew (here)
listings today...
~ March 15, We did it! The weekend was long, stressful and sleep deprived,
but we did it! About 95% of the footage we need it completed (a few
stray shots and one short sequence is all that remains). This turned
out to be a more ambitious project than anyone expected, and I want
to thank everyone who helped out (see list below). I've already added
some behind-the-scenes pics and a synopsis (here
and here). Look for a production
diary, more pics, and short trailer in the coming weeks...
My partner in crime (Bret Mix) mentioned the shoot on his website,
so stop on over and check it out: Electric
Night Entertainment
I would like to take this time to thank Rebekah Morrison (truly wonderful
work Rebekah, and thanks for coming through with the costume!),
my wife Amie, son Gage, brother Dustin and sister Brandy (thanks
for supporting my obsessions!), Conan Rapson and Crystal (it is time
indeed!), Keith Birdsong (incredible make-up effects and shot
suggestions, thanks for making this look more expensive than it really
was!) and everyone involved with the Graham-Carroll House (for letting
us come in and mess the place up!).
Most of all, thanks to Bret Mix for going above and beyond the call
of duty. I couldn't have done any of this without you, and I truly
appreciate it!
Much more to come!

thus far), and the start date has been moved to March 4-6...

start date in mind...

and An
Imperfect Solution) and Rick Tillman (Pickman's
